These are, in my opinion, the best female actors active in film today. They are all popular actresses, but have also done some serious work as well. They can both move and entertain, the mark of a true performer.

1. Kate Winslet

Actress | Titanic

Ask Kate Winslet what she likes about any of her characters, and the word "ballsy" is bound to pop up at least once. The British actress has made a point of eschewing straightforward pretty-girl parts in favor of more devilish damsels; as a result, she's built an eclectic resume that runs the gamut...

I have enjoyed everything that I have seen Ms. Winslet in from Heavenly Creatures to The Holiday. She has an ability to move me and relate to me that no other actress working today has. She is by far my favorite. My favorite films of hers are Hamlet, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Finding Neverland, and The Reader.

2. Jodie Foster

Actress | The Silence of the Lambs

Jodie Foster started her career at the age of two. For four years she made commercials and finally gave her debut as an actress in the TV series Mayberry R.F.D. (1968). In 1975 Jodie was offered the role of prostitute Iris Steensma in the movie Taxi Driver (1976). This role, for which she received ...

Jodie is always a class act. Her roles in The Accused and Silence of the Lambs have always been praised and are wonderful, but my favorite has to be The Brave One. However, she is brilliant in everything she does.

3. Meryl Streep

Actress | Out of Africa

Considered by many critics to be the greatest living actress, Meryl Streep has been nominated for the Academy Award an astonishing 21 times, and has won it three times. Meryl was born Mary Louise Streep in 1949 in Summit, New Jersey, to Mary Wolf (Wilkinson), a commercial artist, and Harry William ...

Meryl Streep is not only one of the few actresses that continues to do significant work after fifty and sixty, but in my opinion her work has gotten better. With the exception of Kramer vs. Kramer I had never been the biggest fan of her work, until movies like Music of the Heart, The Devil Wears Prada, Julie and Julia, and Mama Mia. I have also heard excellent things about Doubt. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite actresses.

4. Nicole Kidman

Actress | Moulin Rouge!

Elegant Nicole Kidman, known as one of Hollywood's top Australian imports, was actually born in Honolulu, Hawaii, while her Australian parents were there on educational visas.

Kidman is the daughter of Janelle Ann (Glenny), a nursing instructor, and Antony David Kidman, a biochemist and clinical ...

I was never that big a fan of Nicole Kidman's early work, but starting with Moulin Rouge I have loved everything I have seen her in. The Others, The Golden Compass, and the Hours are my favorites. Maybe all she needed was to shake Tom Cruise? Should Katie Holmes do the same? :) [Update: Congrats Katie! Looking forward to possibly adding you to this list!]

5. Drew Barrymore

Producer | Charlie's Angels

Since melting audiences' hearts at the age of just six in E.T. (1982), Drew Barrymore has emerged as one of the most beloved and singularly gifted actresses of her generation. Born in Culver City, California to John Drew Barrymore and Jaid Barrymore, the clutches of fame were near inescapable for ...

I've always loved Drew. From her adorable performance in E.T. onward she has always been a favorite of mine. What I like most about her is she is not afraid to have fun with her work, but she can be just as artistic as the rest of them. Case in point, her films Ever After and Home Fries are truly interesting and Music and Lyrics and Never Been Kissed are a lot of fun. I also thought her directorial debut Whip It was incredibly interesting.

6. Julia Roberts

Actress | Pretty Woman

Julia Fiona Roberts never dreamed she would become the most popular actress in America. She was born in Smyrna, Georgia, to Betty Lou (Bredemus) and Walter Grady Roberts, one-time actors and playwrights, and is of English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, German, and Swedish descent. As a child, due to her ...

Julia Roberts has been a favorite of mine for years. Though she has had slumps at various times in her career, she still manages to do excellent work and always ends up back in Hollywood's graces. Her recent films Eat, Pray, Love and Larry Crowne were a joy.

7. Sandra Bullock

Producer | The Proposal

Sandra Annette Bullock was born in Arlington, a Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C. Her mother, Helga Bullock (née Helga Mathilde Meyer), was a German opera singer. Her father, John W. Bullock, was an American voice teacher, who was born in Alabama, of German descent. Sandra grew up on the road ...

Although often thought of only as an actress of romantic comedies, Sandra has done a great job in many wonderful dramas, such as Crash and The Blindside. But it should be noted that her excellent comedic timing should not be underrated. And I really love her personality which is always a plus for me.

8. Anne Hathaway

Actress | Les Misérables

Anne Jacqueline Hathaway was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Kate McCauley Hathaway, an actress, and Gerald T. Hathaway, a lawyer, both originally from Philadelphia. She is of mostly Irish descent, along with English, German, and French. Her first major role came in the short-lived television series ...

When I first saw her in The Princess Diaries I thought her performance was entertaining, but from The Devil Wears Prada on her work really skyrocketed for me. I thought Alice in Wonderland and Love and Other Drugs were excellent and she made me cry in Les Miserables. The Oscar was well deserved

9. Emma Watson

Actress | The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in Paris, France, to British parents, Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson, both lawyers. She moved to Oxfordshire when she was five, where she attended the Dragon School. From the age of six, Emma knew that she wanted to be an actress and, for a number of years,...

After seeing both Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Bling Ring, I think it is time to move Miss Watson from actors to watch to The Best Actresses. She is truly wonderful.

10. Helena Bonham Carter

Actress | Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Helena Bonham Carter is an actress of great versatility, one of the UK's finest and most successful.

Bonham Carter was born May 26, 1966 in Golders Green, London, England, the youngest of three children of Elena (née Propper de Callejón), a psychotherapist, and Raymond Bonham Carter, a merchant ...

Although many people I know think her strange, I think that Ms. Carter is a fascinating character actress who is able to play both the bizarre and the more commonplace. Her work is always interesting and she is great fun to watch.

11. Jennifer Lawrence

Actress | The Hunger Games

As the highest-paid actress in the world in 2015 and 2016, and with her films grossing over $5.5 billion worldwide, Jennifer Lawrence is often cited as the most successful actress of her generation. She is also the first person born in the 1990s to have won an acting Oscar.

Jennifer Shrader Lawrence...

Silver Linings Playbook. Need I say more?

12. Rachel Weisz

Actress | The Constant Gardener

Rachel Hannah Weisz was born on 7 March, 1970, in London, U.K., to Edith Ruth (Teich), a psychoanalyst, and George Weisz, an inventor. Her parents both came to England around 1938. Her father is a Hungarian Jewish immigrant, and her mother, from Vienna, was of Italian and Austrian Jewish heritage. ...

From the first time I saw her in The Mummy I thought Ms. Weisz was extremely charming and talented. As time went on I saw her in other roles in which she was just as wonderful, my favorite being All About a Boy.
