Director: Garry Marshall | Stars: Kate Hudson, John Corbett, Joan Cusack, Hayden Panettiere

Votes: 38,246 | Gross: $37.49M

This is one of my mom's ultimate favorites. Kate Hudson is delightful as is Joan Cusack. It's a good bonding film for mothers and daughters too because Cusack's character is an experienced mom, Hudson is a little less experienced and a little flighty, and Hayden Panettiere is the teenager trying to deal with difficult situations.

2. Mamma Mia! (2008)

51 Metascore

The story of a bride-to-be trying to find her real father told using hit songs by the popular 1970s group ABBA.

Votes: 274,514 | Gross: $144.13M

Great mother/daughter film. The song "Slipping Through My Fingers" will make most mothers (and maybe even some daughters) cry. It's a good hugging moment :-)

3. Brave (2012)

PG | 93 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

69 Metascore

Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.

Directors: Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman, Steve Purcell | Stars: Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters

Votes: 442,504 | Gross: $237.28M

This is the perfect mother/daughter movie for mothers and daughters of all ages. It is fun and touching at the same time. Good message about finding your own way in the world, while not forgetting the ones who love you. I'm sure many mothers and daughters will relate to the fights that Merida and her mother have.

4. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

Votes: 144,673 | Gross: $241.44M

Great film about the tension between trying to be independent, but also feeling devoted to your family. It is a great film for mothers and their teenage/young adult daughters to watch.

5. Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002)

PG-13 | 116 min | Drama

48 Metascore

After years of mother-daughter tension, Siddalee receives a scrapbook detailing the wild adventures of the "Ya-Yas", her mother's girlhood friends.

Votes: 20,957 | Gross: $69.60M

Once again a movie about a complicated mother/daughter relationship. But ultimately, family wins out. Sandra Bullock, Ellen Burstyn, and Ashley Judd are fantastic!

Want a laugh tonight? Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will not disappoint in this laugh a minute film about what it means to be a mother.

7. Miss Congeniality (2000)

43 Metascore

Director: Donald Petrie | Stars: Sandra Bullock, Michael Caine, Benjamin Bratt, Candice Bergen

Votes: 230,439 | Gross: $106.81M

This is a great funny Bullock film, and not inappropriate for younger daughters. In fact, the message that women come in all different types and can still be beautiful is great for adolescent girls in my opinion. It's also always been a favorite of my mom and I.

8. August Rush (2007)

PG | 114 min | Drama, Music

38 Metascore

A musically gifted orphan, Evan, runs away from his orphanage and searches New York City for his birth parents. On his journey, he's taken under the wing of the Wizard, a homeless man who lives in an abandoned theater.

Director: Kirsten Sheridan | Stars: Freddie Highmore, Keri Russell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Terrence Howard

Votes: 111,126 | Gross: $31.66M

When I was away at college and my mom came to visit me, this was always the movie she wanted to watch. It's basically a modern Oliver Twist, but has a great message about the power of music to bring people together. Kerri Russell and Freddie Highmore are fantastic in this and it is appropriate for all ages, in my opinion.

9. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

PG-13 | 103 min | Drama

67 Metascore

Charlie, a 15-year-old introvert, enters high school and is nervous about his new life. When he befriends his seniors, he learns to cope with his friend's suicide and his tumultuous past.

Director: Stephen Chbosky | Stars: Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, Paul Rudd

Votes: 548,238 | Gross: $17.74M

No really strong mother daughter relationships in this movie, but it is a very funny and moving movie and is a favorite not only of my mother and I, but also my baby brother. The film does have some language, sex, and drug use, but I feel it is appropriate for older teens. Those same older teens and young adults may get a lot from this movie as it has a great message.

10. The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996)

PG-13 | 126 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

A shy, middle-aged professor enters into a romantic but non-physical relationship with an unlucky-in-love colleague.

Director: Barbra Streisand | Stars: Barbra Streisand, Jeff Bridges, Lauren Bacall, George Segal

Votes: 22,450 | Gross: $41.25M

My mom is a great Streisand fan. This movie is a great chick flick. Like Miss Congeniality it shows that all kinds of women can be beautiful and sexy, but it is for a slightly more mature audience. It also has a complicated mother/daughter relationship that comes in the form of legendary actresses Barbara Streisand and Lauren Bacall.

11. While You Were Sleeping (1995)

67 Metascore

A hopelessly romantic Chicago Transit Authority ticket booth operator is mistaken for the fiancée of a comatose patient.

Votes: 114,061 | Gross: $81.06M

My mom and I are great fans of this movie. It is a good love story, but also has a great message about family. Funny and touching.

12. Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

72 Metascore

A recently widowed man's son calls a radio talk-show in an attempt to find his father a partner.

Director: Nora Ephron | Stars: Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Ross Malinger, Rita Wilson

Votes: 190,954 | Gross: $126.53M

Ultimate chick flick. Fate and soul mates can transcend all. Need I say more?

13. You've Got Mail (1998)

PG | 119 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

58 Metascore

Book superstore magnate Joe Fox and independent book shop owner Kathleen Kelly fall in love in the anonymity of the Internet, both blissfully unaware that he's trying to put her out of business.

Director: Nora Ephron | Stars: Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey

Votes: 229,767 | Gross: $115.82M

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan once again make movie magic. This is also a love story, but is a little funnier than Sleepless. Just a charming movie.

14. Pretty Woman (1990)

R | 119 min | Comedy, Romance

51 Metascore

A man in a legal but hurtful business needs an escort for some social events, and hires a beautiful prostitute he meets... only to fall in love.

Director: Garry Marshall | Stars: Richard Gere, Julia Roberts, Jason Alexander, Laura San Giacomo

Votes: 362,813 | Gross: $178.41M

Julia Roberts and Richard Gere are another magic movie couple. This movie does have mature themes, after all Roberts plays a hooker, but it is a classic and if your daughter is of the proper age it is a really good modern Cinderella story.

15. Notting Hill (1999)

PG-13 | 124 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

68 Metascore

A set of circumstances makes Anna Scott, a famous actress, fall in love with William Thacker, owner of a bookstore in Notting Hill. But the paparazzi's fascination with her complicates their bond.

Director: Roger Michell | Stars: Hugh Grant, Julia Roberts, Richard McCabe, Rhys Ifans

Votes: 342,455 | Gross: $116.09M

If your daughter is too young for pretty woman, you might want to try this one. It is not nearly as mature and still a good chick flick. Hugh Grant is charming, Roberts is touching, and supporting character-actor Rhys Ifans is hilarious!
