Horror Movies best to worst
by limelovebug | created - 30 May 2014 | updated - 23 Jun 2014 | PublicThis is a list of all the horror movies I could think of with commentary on each. (NOT FINISHED)
It is very hard to compare all horror movies because they can be great in any way. Horror movies can be categorized by their creepiness, originality, goriness, scare factor, production etc. Creepy movies are the kind that don't have to make you jump, but they have you sitting on the edge of your seat through the entire film. Gory movies are the easiest to produce and make money on. Gory movies don't have to have an interesting plot, and yet people will still watch them. They don't have to be scary or creepy, they just have to have lot of blood and guts. Scare fator: the ones that make you jump at every 10 seconds. Some movies are none of the above, but are produced so very well they deserve recognition.
In my own personal opinion and experience(ive seen a lot of movies) The best horror movies are the creepy ones that have you sitting on the edge of your seat. They don't always have to have the best effects or the biggest budget. They are creepy because of the lighting, sound, and originality of it all.

1. Candyman (1992)
R | 99 min | Horror, Thriller
The Candyman, a murderous soul with a hook for a hand, is accidentally summoned to reality by a skeptic grad student researching the monster's myth.
Director: Bernard Rose | Stars: Virginia Madsen, Xander Berkeley, Tony Todd, Kasi Lemmons
Votes: 100,209 | Gross: $25.79M
"Sweets to the Sweet." If you like the kind of movie that keeps you up at night, you are in for a treat. Candyman is in fact, one of the creepiest movies ever made. What about it makes it so creepy? Who knows. This film was produced to perfection. If this film doesn't run chills down your spine, nothing else will.
2. When a Stranger Calls (1979)
R | 97 min | Mystery, Thriller
A psychopathic killer terrorizes a babysitter, then returns seven years later to menace her again.
Director: Fred Walton | Stars: Carol Kane, Charles Durning, Rutanya Alda, Carmen Argenziano
Votes: 14,337 | Gross: $21.41M
One of the greatest and most unappreciated horror films yet. The very first scene Is one of the most bone chilling things I've ever watched (it actually scared me...of all people..) It is a MUST WATCH. However, the reason this movie hasn't received great recognition is because after this first 20 min scene, it is pointless. My advice? Watch the first scene, and don't bother watching the rest. Despite of this minor setback, this is probably one of the creepiest, scariest things ever made. Totally worth it. Trust me, Watch it.
3. The Shining (1980)
R | 146 min | Drama, Horror
A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.
Director: Stanley Kubrick | Stars: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers
Votes: 1,107,555 | Gross: $44.02M
Classic. One of Jack Nicholson's best performances. One of THE greats in horror history.
4. Scream (1996)
R | 111 min | Horror, Mystery
A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a masked killer who targets her and her friends by using scary movies as part of a deadly game.
Director: Wes Craven | Stars: Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich
Votes: 388,716 | Gross: $103.05M
All I can say is, Drew Barrymores death is one of the best horror movie deaths yet. It is captivating, creative, and creepy as hell- especially to the innocent young folks that don't watch a lot of horror movies. The rest of the movie is okay, but the first scene puts this movie at the top of the list.
5. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
R | 118 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
A young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.
Director: Jonathan Demme | Stars: Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Scott Glenn, Ted Levine
Votes: 1,549,322 | Gross: $130.74M
I wasn't sure if this counted as a horror movie or not, but it is one of the greatest films of all time. Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster were AMAZING. This is one of three films in history to win all 5 major academy awards, and it deserves to. This movie is creepy, chilling and very original.
6. Dead Silence (2007)
R | 89 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
After his wife meets a grisly end, Jamie Ashen returns to his hometown of Ravens Fair to find answers. His investigation leads him to the ghost of a ventriloquist named Mary Shaw who seems to have ties to his entire family tree
Director: James Wan | Stars: Ryan Kwanten, Amber Valletta, Donnie Wahlberg, Michael Fairman
Votes: 101,905 | Gross: $16.81M
Scary ventriloquist dolls were very common in older movies and often appeared in The Twilight Zone. This movie takes on an old fear that hasn't been seen in decades. Very creepy as well. Ending was kind of odd, but the plot was very creative, and definitely worth watching.
7. C.H.U.D. (1984)
R | 88 min | Horror, Sci-Fi
A bizarre series of sudden disappearances on the streets of New York City seems to point toward something unsavory living in the sewers.
Director: Douglas Cheek | Stars: John Heard, Daniel Stern, Christopher Curry, Kim Greist
Votes: 13,982 | Gross: $4.65M
Weird and bizarre movie. Not worth watching. Honestly, if I could erase this movie from my memory, I would. I guess its an okay monster movie to watch with the family if anything. Cant remember if it as any nudity though.. I don't think so..
8. Scream 2 (1997)
R | 120 min | Horror, Mystery
Two years after the first series of murders, as Sidney acclimates to college life, someone donning the Ghostface costume begins a new string of killings.
Director: Wes Craven | Stars: Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Jada Pinkett Smith
Votes: 209,862 | Gross: $101.36M
Commentary for scream 2 AND 3. Honestly, they are pretty far fetched, and not as great as the first one.
9. Carrie (2013)
R | 100 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller
A shy girl, outcast by her peers and sheltered by her religious mother, unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.
Director: Kimberly Peirce | Stars: Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Gabriella Wilde, Portia Doubleday
Votes: 148,230 | Gross: $35.27M
Another example of how far down our society is. This movie received great recognition, however it was truly awful. In the original 1976 version, Carrie wasn't a very pretty or likeable character. She was full on creepy. The kind of girl you wouldn't want to talk to at school. You felt bad for her, but not that bad I guess.. In this new 2013 rendition, Carrie is played by Chloe Grace Moretz. She is absolutely adorable. The entire movie I was cringing think "this pitiful young girl, why are they so mean to her?" She is beautiful, and it is easy to empathize with her. It did not settle easy with me as she died.
10. Hannibal (2001)
R | 131 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
Living in exile, Dr. Hannibal Lecter tries to reconnect with now disgraced F.B.I. Agent Clarice Starling, and finds himself a target for revenge from a powerful victim.
Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Anthony Hopkins, Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman, Ray Liotta
Votes: 293,322 | Gross: $165.09M
The ballad of Hannibal Lector and Clarice Starling continues ten years after Silence of the Lambs(1991). This movie might have done much better with Jodie Foster, however she turned down the role. I thought the movie was pointless and boring, but hey, maybe its your cup of tea.
11. Smiley (2012)
R | 95 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
After discovering an urban legend of a demented serial killer, who has nothing but a carved "smiley" on his face, a mentally fragile teenager must figure out if she is going insane - or if she could be the next victim.
Director: Michael J. Gallagher | Stars: Caitlin Gerard, Melanie Papalia, Shane Dawson, Andrew James Allen
Votes: 9,774
The reason I even put this movie on this list is to warn you to NEVER watch it. Another clique movie about an internet killer. The script is awful, the acting is first grade level, and the ending is possibly the worst they could have thought of.
12. Amusement (2008)
R | 85 min | Crime, Horror, Mystery
Three women are stalked by a killer with a grudge that extends back to the girls' childhoods.
Director: John Simpson | Stars: Katheryn Winnick, Laura Breckenridge, Jessica Lucas, Keir O'Donnell
Votes: 12,385
This movie doesn't have a whole lot going on.. It is somewhat creepy, and gory as well. Good movie to watch home alone. Although the ending felt rather rushed.
13. Prom Night (I) (2008)
PG-13 | 88 min | Horror
Donna's senior prom is supposed to be the best night of her life, though a sadistic killer from her past has different plans for her and her friends.
Director: Nelson McCormick | Stars: Brittany Snow, Scott Porter, Jessica Stroup, Dana Davis
Votes: 38,164 | Gross: $43.87M
This is one of those slasher flicks that are good to watch at a middle school sleepover with popcorn. Its fun to watch with friends, and isn't to gross.
14. Cherry Falls (1999)
R | 92 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
In the small town of Cherry Falls, a psychotic murderer is killing off the virgins of the local high school.
Director: Geoffrey Wright | Stars: Brittany Murphy, Jay Mohr, Michael Biehn, Jesse Bradford
Votes: 14,773
Teen Scream takes on a new form when cherry falls high has their own serial killer killing off virgins. Old idea, never really done before, and Brittany Murphy plays in it! Wasn't so bad, and many viewers thought it was good as(if not better) than scream.
15. The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
R | 95 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Five college friends head out to a remote cabin for a getaway, but things don't go as planned when they start getting killed. They soon discover that there is more to the cabin than it seems.
Director: Drew Goddard | Stars: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz
Votes: 451,014 | Gross: $42.07M
Definitely one of the worst films I have ever seen. I am greatly disappointed in the great mass of people who enjoyed this flick. The acting was worthless. The plot was absolutely preposterous(stupid). They tried to pull off an exciting unexpected twist with the ending, but honestly it was so stupid and far-fetched. Oh and I really appreciated the clique sex-scene-gone-wrong with the dumb blonde and huge boobs. Didn't see that coming.
16. House of Wax (2005)
R | 113 min | Horror, Thriller
A group of teens are unwittingly stranded near a strange wax museum and soon must fight to survive and keep from becoming the next exhibit.
Director: Jaume Collet-Serra | Stars: Chad Michael Murray, Paris Hilton, Elisha Cuthbert, Brian Van Holt
Votes: 134,070 | Gross: $32.06M
Completely different from the 1953 Vincent Price classic, but I was actually pretty impressed. It was a completely new take on the original. A whole new story entirely. The only disappointment was Paris Hiltons worthless character. That girl has no business in the film department.
17. The Mist (2007)
R | 126 min | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller
A freak storm unleashes a species of bloodthirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole up in a supermarket and fight for their lives.
Director: Frank Darabont | Stars: Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, Andre Braugher
Votes: 340,697 | Gross: $25.59M
I am a huge Stephen King fan, so I was pretty disappointed by this one. None of the movie made any sense. What is the mist? Can the creatures only live in the fog? Why do the creatures leave after the fog leaves? This movie was pitiful. Nothing really interesting happened. The entire movie was about dodging these creatures. And as for the ending(this isn't a spoiler), they tried to pull off some huge twist and failed utterly. It wasn't genius, just very very agitating.
18. Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings (2011 Video)
R | 93 min | Adventure, Horror
A group of college students gets lost in a storm during their snowmobiling trip and takes shelter in an abandoned sanitarium which, unbeknown to them, is home to deformed cannibals.
Director: Declan O'Brien | Stars: Sean Skene, Blane Cypurda, Dan Skene, Tristan Carlucci
Votes: 28,009
One of the most disgusting movies ever. Doesn't have a very interesting plot, but if youre one of those people that like gory flicks, then watch this one. For me, I haven't seen the others of this series, but if they are anything like this one, then I am not looking forward to it.
19. House of Wax (1953)
GP | 88 min | Horror
An associate burns down a wax museum with the owner inside, but he survives only to become vengeful and murderous.
Director: André De Toth | Stars: Vincent Price, Frank Lovejoy, Phyllis Kirk, Carolyn Jones
Votes: 20,269 | Gross: $23.75M
This movie is a classic. It isn't particularly gory or scary, but the acting is unbelievable. One of Vincent Price's best works.
20. Halloween (1978)
R | 91 min | Horror, Thriller
Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.
Director: John Carpenter | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tony Moran, Nancy Kyes
Votes: 306,954 | Gross: $47.00M
This review goes for the entire series when I say: Not worth watching. Honestly, this is one of the most widely acclaimed horror movie series, and it shouldn't be. Jamie Lee Curtis was awful for this role. As for Michael Meyers, he is often described as one of the best movie serial killers, but he is incredibly boring. He doesn't say anything, he walks really slow, and his kills aren't very fascinating. This movie series is a waste of time.
21. Homecoming (I) (2009)
R | 91 min | Drama, Thriller
A jilted ex-girlfriend plots revenge after her former beau comes back to their hometown with a new lover.
Director: Morgan J. Freeman | Stars: Mischa Barton, Matt Long, Jessica Stroup, Michael Landes
Votes: 4,543 | Gross: $8.50M
This movie was an absolutely horrifying rip-off of Misery(Stephen kings 1990: Kathy Bates and James Caan). Different story, but its the same situation. Some jealous ex-girlfriend of an ex-high school joc kidnaps his new girlfriend and its down hill from there. Unfortunately, the main actress is unsuccessful at delivering the same level of crazy as Kathy Bates. If you have seen Misery, then you will know exactly how this story will go.
22. The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (1976)
PG | 91 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery
A thirteen-year-old girl, who lives with her absentee father, befriends a disabled teenage amateur magician and invites him, gradually, into her tenuous struggle against a predatory local neighbor.
Director: Nicolas Gessner | Stars: Jodie Foster, Martin Sheen, Alexis Smith, Mort Shuman
Votes: 18,097
Great Flick. More of a mystery, and probably a little slow for the average horror fanatic, but worth watching. Jodie Foster was remarkable in the movie. Very original. One of my personal favorites, but no I would not consider this as "one of the best"
23. 1408 (2007)
PG-13 | 104 min | Fantasy, Horror, Mystery
A man who specialises in debunking paranormal occurrences checks into the fabled room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel. Soon after settling in, he confronts genuine terror.
Director: Mikael Håfström | Stars: John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack, Tony Shalhoub
Votes: 294,353 | Gross: $71.99M
Once again, Stephen king has let us down with this one. I'll just say, it was a big waste of time, and nothing actually happened. The entire movie was a delusion..
24. Mama (I) (2013)
PG-13 | 100 min | Fantasy, Horror, Thriller
After a young couple take in their two nieces, they suspect that a supernatural spirit named Mama has latched onto their family.
Director: Andy Muschietti | Stars: Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, Isabelle Nélisse
Votes: 191,122 | Gross: $71.63M
This movie is one of the "scary" ones I described in the bio. It didn't scare me particularly(but I don't scare easily), however from what I hear from others, it will make you jump. But as I said previously, its not scary-- its just depressing.
25. The Last Light (2014)
Not Rated | 93 min | Drama, Thriller
Seven strangers find themselves trapped inside an abandoned hospital after an unexplainable apocalyptic event. In addition to being haunted by what they've lost, the strangers must also ... See full summary »
Director: Andrew Hyatt | Stars: Edward Furlong, Jeff Fahey, Molly Hagan, Ed Quinn
Votes: 626
The problem with this movie, is that the entire movie felt like it was building up to something and we were left feeling empty. Not a whole lot is going on during this movie, it was really slow, and boring. The movie counts down from 57 days (skipping a lot of days), the anticipation builds, and you start to wonder how all your questions will be answered. The somewhat "twist ending" was expected, predictable and boring, and by the end of the movie, none of the questions are answered.
26. Sorority Row (2009)
R | 101 min | Horror, Mystery
A group of sorority sisters try to cover up the death of their house-sister after a prank gone wrong, only to be stalked by a serial killer.
Director: Stewart Hendler | Stars: Briana Evigan, Rumer Willis, Carrie Fisher, Teri Andrez
Votes: 32,417 | Gross: $11.96M
Good movie to watch at a sleepover, but not a "great film". I have no problem with it particularly, other than the overuse of blood and violence.
27. Fright Night (2011)
R | 106 min | Action, Comedy, Drama

Director: Craig Gillespie | Stars: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant, Toni Collette
Votes: 113,168 | Gross: $18.30M
This film's shallow attempt at gore and humor, was not amusing. The script wasn't creative in any way, and the characters weren't very likeble people.
28. The Last House on the Left (1972)
