1. Quantum of Solace (2008)
PG-13 | 106 min | Action, Adventure, Mystery
James Bond descends into mystery as he tries to stop a mysterious organisation from eliminating a country's most valuable resource.
Director: Marc Forster | Stars: Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, Judi Dench
Votes: 471,010 | Gross: $168.37M
It's hard to know whether this will reach with much disagreement. Everything was wrong: the villain was weak, the story was completely incoherent, the action was boring, the camera work was irritating and Craig was relatively poor as Bond. The worst to date, no doubt about it. The constant jumping around created a confusing plot that didn't seem very interesting anyway.
2. For Your Eyes Only (1981)
PG | 127 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
Secret service agent James Bond is assigned to find a missing British vessel equipped with a weapons encryption device and prevent it from falling into enemy hands.
Director: John Glen | Stars: Roger Moore, Carole Bouquet, Topol, Lynn-Holly Johnson
Votes: 108,357 | Gross: $62.30M
Largely a yawn fest. It felt like it was never going to end and wasn't engaging anyway. I have no interest in seeing it again and watching Roger Moore bounce around in an early 1980s cardigan without sufficient make up to cover his advancing years. Often felt like I was not watching a Bond was simply a B-grade 80s action film.
3. Live and Let Die (1973)
PG | 121 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
James Bond is sent to stop a diabolically brilliant heroin magnate armed with a complex organisation and a reliable psychic tarot card reader.
Director: Guy Hamilton | Stars: Roger Moore, Yaphet Kotto, Jane Seymour, Clifton James
Votes: 115,555 | Gross: $35.38M
For some reason, this is rated by some (but not all) Bond enthusiasts. It's corny and cruddy with oddball villains, poor special effects and a degree of boredom throughout. It had two things going for it: Roger Moore slotted into the role well given he had big shoes to fill; and some of the action scenes were good fun. Enough to keep it off the bottom of the list
4. From Russia with Love (1963)
PG | 115 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
James Bond willingly falls into an assassination plot involving a naive Russian beauty in order to retrieve a Soviet encryption device that was stolen by S.P.E.C.T.R.E.
Director: Terence Young | Stars: Sean Connery, Robert Shaw, Lotte Lenya, Daniela Bianchi
Votes: 145,447 | Gross: $24.80M
This was NOT a good Bond. It has not aged well, but even so, the dialogue and story line generally put me to sleep. Something about a code machine and a defector. It generally lacked a pulse and verve that we found before and after this installment, rendering it largely unmemorable. The biggest downside of this film is the ending. You feel like the film is somehow about to reach is climactic conclusion and strangely the credits start rolling. Almost felt like it was unfinished!
5. A View to a Kill (1985)
PG | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
The recovery of a microchip from the body of a fellow British secret agent leads James Bond to a mad industrialist scheming to cause massive destruction.
Director: John Glen | Stars: Roger Moore, Christopher Walken, Tanya Roberts, Grace Jones
Votes: 104,968 | Gross: $50.33M
Roger Moore's last outing. It has its amuzing moments and some of the action sequences are reasonable. Walken makes a good villain, but in comparison to others, it was just "ok" and Moore definitely bowed out at the right time. He looked too old to have that dynamic, active Bond edge.
6. Octopussy (1983)
PG | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
A fake Fabergé egg recovered from the body of a fellow agent leads James Bond to uncover a jewel smuggling operation led by the mysterious Octopussy, and a plot to blow up a NATO air base.
Director: John Glen | Stars: Roger Moore, Maud Adams, Louis Jourdan, Kristina Wayborn
Votes: 113,043 | Gross: $67.90M
Not a bad installment. Fairly good story and dialogue as well as fun action sequences. The first half of the story is possibly a bit overlong and it does take some time for things to get moving, but good mix of strong villains, cheesy throw-away Bond lines, action and style.
7. The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)
PG | 125 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
James Bond is targeted by the world's most expensive assassin, while he attempts to recover sensitive solar cell technology that is being sold to the highest bidder.
Director: Guy Hamilton | Stars: Roger Moore, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Maud Adams
Votes: 113,143 | Gross: $20.97M
The dialogue is fairly ordinary, the cinematography somehow lacks the smarts of other Bonds and, while Bond doesn't need special gadgets for the film to be good, the action was mostly just chasing each other around holding a gun. The film gets a major redemption from having one of the best Bond villains: Christopher Lee. The quirky midget also adds some fun and interest - Roger Moore certainly didn't!
8. Dr. No (1962)
PG | 110 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
A resourceful British government agent seeks answers in a case involving the disappearance of a colleague and the disruption of the American space program.
Director: Terence Young | Stars: Sean Connery, Ursula Andress, Bernard Lee, Joseph Wiseman
Votes: 179,508 | Gross: $16.07M
I think there are way too many people from earlier generations who think the original is the best and everything else is secondary. Dr. No was a great start and given the budget, a fairly impressive film. But it has dated and it's not super-engaging. Definitely not a bad Bond, but not in the top 5!
9. Licence to Kill (1989)
PG-13 | 133 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
A vengeful James Bond goes rogue to infiltrate and take down the organization of a drug lord who has murdered his friend's new wife and left him near death.
Director: John Glen | Stars: Timothy Dalton, Robert Davi, Carey Lowell, Talisa Soto
Votes: 112,150 | Gross: $34.67M
Despite some mixed opinion, I thought Dalton was a good Bond. To the purest, his interpretation was fair closer to Ian Flemming's Bond than Moore or Connery. This was good in some ways. The action was good, the dialogue was fine, several action scenes were great and the acting was solid, especially the villain. However, it was very grim, unusually violent for a Bond and the hero running away from MI6 on a personal revenge mission somehow didn't wash. Bit of an 80s movie thing I guess...!
10. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
PG | 125 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
James Bond investigates the hijacking of British and Russian submarines carrying nuclear warheads, with the help of a K.G.B. agent whose lover he killed.
Director: Lewis Gilbert | Stars: Roger Moore, Barbara Bach, Curd Jürgens, Richard Kiel
Votes: 116,332 | Gross: $46.80M
One of the better Bonds. Great girl, great villain, strong story and a kick-ass opening, even for a non-Brit! Have no problems sitting down and watching reruns of this installment
11. Casino Royale (2006)
PG-13 | 144 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
After earning 00 status and a licence to kill, secret agent James Bond sets out on his first mission as 007. Bond must defeat a private banker funding terrorists in a high-stakes game of poker at Casino Royale, Montenegro.
Director: Martin Campbell | Stars: Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Judi Dench, Jeffrey Wright
Votes: 694,954 | Gross: $167.45M
Daniel Craig's first Bond film was met with great anticipation! Generally, it wasn't a bad start. The villain was great and the effective reboot to kinda 'start over' was fairly well timed. In reality, the plot was ridiculous: they give Bond millions to win a poker game so he can stop terrorist financing. The portable defibrillator scene was pathetically stupid and Craig lacked the flare and touch of cheekiness that we found in all other Bonds.
12. The World Is Not Enough (1999)
PG-13 | 128 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
James Bond uncovers a nuclear plot while protecting an oil heiress from her former kidnapper, an international terrorist who can't feel pain.
Director: Michael Apted | Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Sophie Marceau, Robert Carlyle, Denise Richards
Votes: 210,048 | Gross: $126.94M
Yeah well... Denise Richards as a nuclear scientist is what it is... The villain who can't feel pain was silly as well. However, the action in this one made it a good watch and the story had some twists that had a bit of depth, but didn't get wishy washy, nor incoherent. Is fun to watch again and is therefore enjoyable and amuzing at times in a very Bond way, even though it isn't one of the greats
13. Diamonds Are Forever (1971)
PG | 120 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
A diamond smuggling investigation leads James Bond to Las Vegas where he uncovers an evil plot involving a rich business tycoon.
Director: Guy Hamilton | Stars: Sean Connery, Jill St. John, Charles Gray, Lana Wood
Votes: 114,207 | Gross: $43.82M
This may have been a bit 1970s, might have some questionable acting and might be a little campy at times. But it's a bit of a timeless Bond. Still good to watch and plenty of great action sequences. The plot was fairly reasonable and it had a great final 30 minutes.
14. You Only Live Twice (1967)
PG | 117 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
James Bond and the Japanese Secret Service must find and stop the true culprit of a series of space hijackings, before war is provoked between Russia and the United States.
Director: Lewis Gilbert | Stars: Sean Connery, Akiko Wakabayashi, Mie Hama, Tetsurô Tanba
Votes: 117,616 | Gross: $43.08M
This is another good Bond that you can watch again. Asia provided a refreshing backdrop and Connery churned out a great performance. This certainly is the start of the truly great Bonds in my list.
15. Die Another Day (2002)
PG-13 | 133 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
James Bond is sent to investigate the connection between a North Korean terrorist and a diamond mogul, who is funding the development of an international space weapon.
Director: Lee Tamahori | Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Halle Berry, Rosamund Pike, Toby Stephens
Votes: 229,257 | Gross: $160.94M
Bond was in fine form. The story opened with a strong twist of events, the action sequences were fantastic, the Bond humour was in full flight and Jinx gave it a great edge. Enjoy watching reruns and its simply good fun. The fact that it gets too ridiculous at points is hard to ignore (invisible car, invisible car detector, the surfing scene). But let's face it, it's fun nonetheless and not a bad sign-off for Brosnan.
16. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
PG | 142 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
British agent James Bond goes undercover to pursue the villainous Ernst Stavro Blofeld, who is planning to hold the world to ransom.
Director: Peter R. Hunt | Stars: George Lazenby, Diana Rigg, Telly Savalas, Gabriele Ferzetti
Votes: 99,508 | Gross: $22.80M
It's almost strange that this Bond appears near the top of my list and the list of many others. After all, it was before and after two Connery Bonds, it featured Bond in a relationship, it's old and George Lazenby never did another Bond. But it was really good! The story was probably one of the best, action was awesome, the leading lady was memorable the plot and scripting were top notch. Highly rated.
17. Moonraker (1979)
PG | 126 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
James Bond investigates the mid-air theft of a space shuttle, and discovers a plot to commit global genocide.
Director: Lewis Gilbert | Stars: Roger Moore, Lois Chiles, Michael Lonsdale, Richard Kiel
Votes: 108,851 | Gross: $70.31M
Great gadgets, amazing villain, a good end-of-the-world plot, good women, great locations. Some people downgrade this one because they felt it was some 'star wars meets bond' attempt, but I thought that it stood well on its own two feet, the space part was really only the last 20-30 minutes and it delivered in many great ways compared to other Bonds. Always enjoy watching it again and some great one liners.
18. Goldfinger (1964)
PG | 110 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
While investigating a gold magnate's smuggling, James Bond uncovers a plot to contaminate the Fort Knox gold reserve.
Director: Guy Hamilton | Stars: Sean Connery, Gert Fröbe, Honor Blackman, Shirley Eaton
Votes: 202,670 | Gross: $51.08M
Iconic Bond film. The gadgets, the car, the stellar performances and gripping action. Simply one of the best and most certainly timeless.
19. Skyfall (2012)
PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
James Bond's loyalty to M is tested when her past comes back to haunt her. When MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.
Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Judi Dench
Votes: 731,458 | Gross: $304.36M
While the first two Daniel Craig bonds didn't impress me, this one was one of the all time greats. The villain was brilliant, the plot was clear, but with great twists, the new Q was awesome and Craig finally looked at home being Bond. Never tire of watching this one again and a great refresh for the series overall.
20. GoldenEye (1995)
PG-13 | 130 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
Years after a friend and fellow 00 agent is killed on a joint mission, a secret space based weapons program known as "GoldenEye" is stolen. James Bond is assigned to stop a Russian crime syndicate from using the weapon.
Director: Martin Campbell | Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean, Izabella Scorupco, Famke Janssen
Votes: 270,340 | Gross: $106.60M
Welcome to the new age of Bond. This one kicked it off. Great story, great refresh of actors, wonderful Bond humour and strong action. Really up there with the best Bonds ever and Brosnan really brought a new level of fun and enjoyment to the series, while remaining loyal to the Bond character. Sean Bean did well as the villain.
21. Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)
PG-13 | 119 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
James Bond sets out to stop a media mogul's plan to induce war between China and the UK in order to obtain exclusive global media coverage.
Director: Roger Spottiswoode | Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Jonathan Pryce, Michelle Yeoh, Teri Hatcher
Votes: 204,767 | Gross: $125.33M
By far, the best opening section and in fact, the best first 1 hour of any Bond. Leading ladies were fantastic, the villain stole the scenes, the humour was awesome and action scenes are magnificent. Really great Bond that was strangely lost of many Bond loyalists (for reasons I don't understand). It's only downside was that the ending started dragging a little too much, as fun as it was to watch!
22. Thunderball (1965)
PG | 130 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
James Bond heads to the Bahamas to recover two nuclear warheads stolen by S.P.E.C.T.R.E. Agent Emilio Largo in an international extortion scheme.
Director: Terence Young | Stars: Sean Connery, Claudine Auger, Adolfo Celi, Luciana Paluzzi
Votes: 127,172 | Gross: $63.60M
Connery's best and most underrated Bond. It's hardly a surprise that they singled this one out for a remake (Never Say Never Again). Script, action, characters, plot... Even the theme song was a ripper. Arguably the best, but...
23. The Living Daylights (1987)
PG | 130 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
James Bond is sent to investigate a KGB policy to kill all enemy spies, and uncovers an arms deal that potentially has major global ramifications.
Director: John Glen | Stars: Timothy Dalton, Maryam d'Abo, Jeroen Krabbé, Joe Don Baker
Votes: 105,908 | Gross: $51.19M
Brilliant. Dalton was a great Bond and perhaps this one will surprise many. But it opened well, the plot was engaging, the end was gripping, humour was well balanced and it was a highlight of cinema in that era. After a few tired ones from Moore, this was really a turning point and ultimately my favourite!
