1. 1917 (2019)

R | 119 min | Action, Drama, History

78 Metascore

April 6th, 1917. As an infantry battalion assembles to wage war deep in enemy territory, two soldiers are assigned to race against time and deliver a message that will stop 1,600 men from walking straight into a deadly trap.

Director: Sam Mendes | Stars: Dean-Charles Chapman, George MacKay, Daniel Mays, Colin Firth

Votes: 675,860 | Gross: $159.23M

This for me is an example of a great cinema experience. the one shot look is not a mere gimmick!, it is a method of getting the viewer immersed in the story and the humanity in those portrayed. The cinematography is stunning and the score enhances the movie experience with yet another emotional level. Not just brilliant but an awesome piece of film making imo

2. Jojo Rabbit (2019)

PG-13 | 108 min | Comedy, Drama, War

58 Metascore

A young German boy in the Hitler Youth whose hero and imaginary friend is the country's dictator is shocked to discover that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.

Director: Taika Waititi | Stars: Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, Scarlett Johansson, Taika Waititi

Votes: 441,469 | Gross: $33.37M

2nd viewing and it had even more of an effect on me this time. I really love films that can switch emotions back and forth and this takes you to extreme highs of fun and then gets you in the feels minutes after. A brilliant anti war film that shows the fanaticism at the beginning can lead to hope for a better ideology at the the end but the message is carried with clever humour. My favourite cinema film of the year so far already and it will take something special to beat it. The young Jojo is such a great little actor he has great support but what an achievement for his first film in such an incredible leading role. Sam Rockwell is his usual brilliantness, Scarlett Johansson great too but the other highlight is of course Taika a genius in his writing directing and also insanely brilliant as Hitler. 8.5/10

3. The Gentlemen (2019)

4. Parasite (2019)

R | 132 min | Drama, Thriller

97 Metascore

Greed and class discrimination threaten the newly-formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan.

Director: Bong Joon Ho | Stars: Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-sik

Votes: 959,804 | Gross: $53.37M

This really is one of those films where the less you know about the better it is, so avoid trailers and reviews with spoilers. It's not easy to say much without spoilers tbh, just expect the unexpected and enjoy the tale of upstairs and downstairs in South Korean style. Possibly one of the most original stories told with so much flair for some time, a great ensemble cast deliver an entertaining look at the upper and lower classes in a very dark and humourous way. A modern classic for sure

5. Tenet (2020)

PG-13 | 150 min | Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

69 Metascore

Armed with only the word "Tenet," and fighting for the survival of the entire world, CIA operative, The Protagonist, journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a global mission that unfolds beyond real time.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Juhan Ulfsak

Votes: 592,849 | Gross: $58.46M

it all makes a lot more sense after a second viewing, but has lost the wow factor quickly. I guess a simple explanation of what it's all about is by saying it's like Back to the Future lll, meets James Bond !?. Temporal time shifts allow time to become bidirectional which can lead to entropy due to inversion of the fabric of time and space. Simples!?! It is very much a spy espionage thriller with agents from the CIA and other organisations not unlike the Men in Black, (without the aliens). Kenneth Brannagh is Sator a Russian megalomaniac hell bent on something akin to global domination. He is a man of great power and wealth who takes pleasure in gaslighting his trophy wife, Kat (Elizabeth Debicki). John David Washington (Denzil's boy) is the Protagonist, the agent tasked with stopping Sator's plan with the help of a special agents including Neil (Robert Pattinson). There's plenty of action and it's very original in how it plays out. The score by Ludwig Goransson is pumping in line with the action sequences and science fictiony when necessary but really gets the tension up more when it shifts into boom chaggacha mode. Great performances all round without exception, even a nice little cameo for Michael Caine, (well, Nolan does like him). The thing that is missing though is any emotional connection between the characters and me the viewer, which is unusual for Nolan movies. It started as 86/100 on first viewing but drops down to 82/100 on second viewing, but very much worth seeing at the cinema imo

6. Richard Jewell (2019)

R | 131 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

Director: Clint Eastwood | Stars: Paul Walter Hauser, Sam Rockwell, Brandon Stanley, Ryan Boz

Votes: 97,738

It gets off to a slow start but then it grabs you like over tightened handcuffs, incredible true story well told, Great performance by Paul Walter Hauser, Kathy Bates and Sam Rockwell .

7. The Invisible Man (I) (2020)

8. The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019)

PG | 119 min | Comedy, Drama

77 Metascore

A modern take on Charles Dickens's classic tale of a young orphan who is able to triumph over many obstacles.

Director: Armando Iannucci | Stars: Dev Patel, Hugh Laurie, Tilda Swinton, Peter Capaldi

Votes: 22,415

An original adaption of a classic. This film is like no other period drama I can think of, for a start there's a great 'colourblind' cast that some might not like but I thought it was a bold concept that actually makes it more interesting and the right people seemed perfect for each role. Thoroughly enjoyed it and was smiling from start to finish.

9. Dark Waters (2019)

PG-13 | 126 min | Biography, Drama, History

73 Metascore

A corporate defense attorney takes on an environmental lawsuit against a chemical company that exposes a lengthy history of pollution.

Director: Todd Haynes | Stars: Mark Ruffalo, Anne Hathaway, Tim Robbins, Bill Pullman

Votes: 101,848

10. The Lighthouse (I) (2019)

R | 109 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

83 Metascore

Two lighthouse keepers try to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.

Director: Robert Eggers | Stars: Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe, Valeriia Karaman, Logan Hawkes

Votes: 255,062 | Gross: $0.43M

Having recently watched The Lighthouse (2016) I was expecting Eggers to tell a very different story, although both films are based on the Smalls Island incident Eggers has moved the setting to New England and added extra levels of madness the the lower budget film doesn't have. Along with a great acting double of Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson there's an increased atmosphere thanks to the black and white cinematography, I am not sure if the square picture format helped though. The Welsh film is still good and underrated imo and maybe this new version is great but still a tad overrated. 77/100 imo

11. Les Misérables (2019)

R | 104 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

78 Metascore

A cop from the provinces moves to Paris to join the Anti-Crime Brigade of Montfermeil, discovering an underworld where the tensions between the different groups mark the rhythm.

Director: Ladj Ly | Stars: Damien Bonnard, Alexis Manenti, Djebril Zonga, Issa Perica

Votes: 28,300 | Gross: $0.33M

Not the usual Victor Hugo Les Mis, but the struggles of the peasants of his 19th century France are not too far removed from the modern day multicultural society that struggles to be noticed in Paris. This story may have some original ideas but the poverty and separatism is all too common, but that is also the strong point of the film. The tension is relentless as a series of actions heats up a fragile peace between gangs that control the streets often with the police but also against them. The new cop in town is very much a fish out of water on a steep learning curve, teamed up with the cities finest? toughest, more like. The gang leaders might think they control the streets but there's a revolution coming from the new kids on the block, they are fed up with the gangs and the police. This is not the Paris in the tourism brochures and the cinematography shows it in its true colours or the shades of grey in the slums of the ethically and religiously diverse community. It's a tough watch at times but edge of your seat stuff from start to finish.

12. Savage (II) (2019)

100 min | Crime, Drama

Inspired by the true stories of New Zealand's street gangs across 30 years, SAVAGE follows Danny at three defining moments in his life as he grows from a boy into the violent enforcer of a gang.

Director: Sam Kelly | Stars: Jake Ryan, John Tui, Chelsie Preston Crayford, Seth Flynn

Votes: 2,054

This is not what comes to mind when I think of New Zealand, but apparently gang culture was and still is a part of life in some communities there. This is a powerful and violent history centred on a man/boy, Danny, who is rejected by his family, denounced by his father after a shameful but minor theft incident, sent to borstal he toughen ups fast. The story focuses on 3 periods in his life, 1965, 1972 and 1989, when he is a boy at home with his family, then after getting out of borstal and finally when he is the 2nd in command of a violent gang 'The Savages'. Loyalties are tested and descent is shut down hard within the gang and rival gangs get a hard time too no matter who might be a member. Danny has made the gang his family but he yearns for some contact with his mother, his brothers and sisters, but he can't find the strength to go the final few yards. The cast is made up of unknown actors to me but there are some really good performances amongst them. There's no pulling of punches when the violent encounters are on screen but they are not too graphic, mostly. The soundtrack is interesting with some hard rock as you might expect. It's multicultural but never racist, although there is some tension between the native New Zealanders and the white gang members. The overall journey of a violent man is surprisingly moving at times and makes this film stand out from the usual gang films out of Hollywood.

13. Babyteeth (2019)

MA-17 | 118 min | Comedy, Drama, Music

77 Metascore

Milla, a seriously ill teenager, falls in love with a drug dealer, Moses, her parents' worst nightmare.

Director: Shannon Murphy | Stars: Eliza Scanlen, Michelle Lotters, Toby Wallace, Sora Wakaki

Votes: 19,069

I went in blind and came out unable to see. There is a lot going on in this film, dysfunctional families, drugs, inappropriate behaviour, romance and tough love. A schoolgirl, Milla, bumps into Moses a drug dealer and she is transfixed, her life is already on a downward path but can Moses help her, can she help him? The cast are all incredible, especially Eliza Scanlen, Milla, is so natural and believable, and Toby Wallace, Moses is also so good. The characters are so real and you can connect with them, they grow on you and you can't help but care about what happens to them. The film takes you on a journey, a roller-coaster ride of emotions, laughter, anger, annoyance and heartbreak.

14. How I Became a Gangster (2019)

Not Rated | 140 min | Crime, Drama

A polish gangster discovers the senselessness of his life.

Director: Maciej Kawulski | Stars: Marcin Kowalczyk, Tomasz Wlosok, Natalia Szroeder, Natalia Siwiec

Votes: 4,791

it's like a true story of a 30 year biography of a gangster, from a 1977 child to a powerful kingpin of Poland's mafia/ criminal underworld, it's also quite funny too, not a million miles away from a Guy Ritchie film. Great performances from the leads.

15. Just Mercy (2019)

PG-13 | 137 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

68 Metascore

World-renowned civil rights defense attorney Bryan Stevenson works to free a wrongly condemned death row prisoner.

Director: Destin Daniel Cretton | Stars: Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx, Brie Larson, Charlie Pye Jr.

Votes: 75,748

I didn't realise this was based on true events before going in and surprised that it's not been marketed as such? Jamie Fox was at his best since Ray(2004) and Brie Larson was pretty good too. It is a film that seemed to be too understated considering the significance of the highlighted case and the others that followed, after all this isn't based in the 1960s and shows the struggle with racism is still very much an issue in the U.S. Sadly, this film doesn't seem to have attracted a big audience.

16. Emma. (2020)

PG | 124 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

71 Metascore

In 1800s England, a well meaning but selfish young woman meddles in the love lives of her friends.

17. The Roads Not Taken (2020)

R | 85 min | Drama

42 Metascore

A day in the life of Leo and his daughter, Molly, as he floats through alternate lives he could have lived, leading Molly to wrestle with her own path as she considers her future.

Director: Sally Potter | Stars: Javier Bardem, Elle Fanning, Branka Katic, Salma Hayek

Votes: 2,897

This is a very moving film, maybe because my father has dementia played a part in that!?. Because it is a bit confusing it might not be for everyone?. Javier Bardem is brilliant as Leo a man suffering from a mental illness (not specifically alzhiemers), his life is now confused by reality, dreams, memories and hallucinations. Elle Fanning is also brilliant as the doting daughter, Molly, she takes care of her father Leo, with help from a carer. Molly has a life of her own but Leo complicates her path forward. Leo is a Mexican now living in a downtown part of Brooklyn, mostly in a trance like state, the images we see show a parallel existence of what happened in the past and what might have been, hence the title, Roads not Taken, his life seems to be full of regrets or just wrong choices?. One thing that strikes you is the lack of empathy shown to Leo when he struggles with appointments at the dentist, opticians and a visit to the supermarket and hospital, but there is more empathy from an immigrant who finds him wondering the New York streets at night. It's a sobering tale and probably won't get a great audience which is a shame because mental health issues are more of a pandemic around the world than at any other time and likely to be increasing. I hope this movie gets some recognition during the next awards season not just for the great performances but for the awareness it shows that is so needed.

21. Proxima (2019)

71 Metascore

An astronaut prepares for a one-year mission aboard the International Space Station.

Director: Alice Winocour | Stars: Eva Green, Zélie Boulant, Matt Dillon, Aleksey Fateev

Votes: 8,992

Eva Green is a sure thing when it comes to a great performance and she doesn't disappoint here, she plays a Sarah devoted mother and determined French astronaut. Balancing life as a separated mother with the intensive training in Russia's space city is quite a challenge. This isn't a 'Space' movie, so might disappoint some people with that expectation, however the training at Space City is really interesting and very accurately done. The focus and perspective is very much on women in a mans world and demonstrats that it is still a struggle to overcome the prejudices. Sarah is in turmoil because she is training for a mission to Mars, via the International Space Station and will be separated from her daughter Stella for a long period, this is made more complicated because she is separated from Stella's father, however there is still a bond there and he steps up to take more care of his daughter. Stella is well played by the unknown to me actress and I would expect her to do well in the future. The rest of the supporting cast is made up of supporting characters and some less so towards Sarah's ambition. The emotions of the mother daughter bond make this a more thought provoking film about space exploration and I hope it does better at the box office than it might in this challenging time in the world.

26. The Rhythm Section (2020)

R | 109 min | Action, Drama, Mystery

45 Metascore

A woman seeks revenge against those who orchestrated a plane crash that killed her family.

Director: Reed Morano | Stars: Blake Lively, Richard Brake, Elly Curtis, David Duggan

Votes: 19,645 | Gross: $5.44M

Revenge meets assassin training and leads to a good girl power action film. OK, it's not very believable but there is a lot of realism that is often missing from the blockbuster films. Blake Lively is really good and when she gets hit she gets hurt. Jude Law is usually good and he is here as a tough agent. It might be a little predictable but not so much to completely spoil the whole thing.

27. The Call of the Wild (2020)

30. Unhinged (I) (2020)

40 Metascore

After a confrontation with an unstable man at an intersection, a woman becomes the target of his rage.

Director: Derrick Borte | Stars: Russell Crowe, Caren Pistorius, Gabriel Bateman, Jimmi Simpson

Votes: 76,778 | Gross: $20.83M

Finally back to the cinema after a 136 day break and first up is Russell Crowe in Unhinged, a man full of hate having a bad day makes it a bad day for everyone who gets near to him as he goes all out for some road rage revenge. Crowe is larger than life in more ways than one and a crazy killer seems to be right up his street. This could be used as a road safety campaign, be nice on the road, wear your seat belt, don't use your phone while driving and definitely don't do your eye lashes on the motorway. OK, it's not anything really new and exciting, it's been done before and often better but also worse. 65/100

31. The Broken Hearts Gallery (2020)

PG-13 | 109 min | Comedy, Romance

57 Metascore

After a break-up, a young woman decides to start a gallery where people can leave trinkets from past relationships.

Director: Natalie Krinsky | Stars: Geraldine Viswanathan, Dacre Montgomery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Molly Gordon

Votes: 10,209

Broken Hearts Gallery, I didn't know what this was beforehand and if I had known it was a chick fluc RomCom I might have given it a miss, but I am glad I saw it, turns out I can enjoy more than I expected. Obviously there are many clichés but there's enough quirky and not overly played roles to entertain us for 90 +minutes, apart from Billy from Stranger Things who plays Nick in the joint lead the rest of the cast are unknown to me. The main characters are easy to like and I even cared how it would end up for them, the bad guys are equally easy to dislike as is the norm for RomComs. There are plenty of laughs to be had and you can forgive some for falling flat too. As a 3rd film of the day it wasn't a bad finale after 2 gang culture films in Savage and Les Miserables.

32. Petla (2020)

105 min | Action, Crime, Drama

Based on a true story about a 2nd generation cop who has designs on becoming a detective but his goals descend into bribery, corruption and addiction.

Director: Patryk Vega | Stars: Antoni Królikowski, Katarzyna Warnke, Piotr Stramowski, Maciej Zacharzewski

Votes: 817

Without even an IMDb plot synopsis to go by I went in blind. The film starts rather ominously with a dark image from within the womb then quickly through childbirth and the child, Daniel, growing up until an adult ready to join the police force. Then there's a distinct 2 halves to this movie, the first half is an hilariously funny crime thriller where Daniel has a lucky break and his career rises very quickly thanks to some brothers, the 'Twins' who help him and his department take down lots of high profile criminals. Daniel is so tied up with the Twins and their criminal activities that he inevitably crosses the line. Daniel's boss loves to be on TV and behaves like a b movie actor, but supports Daniel because he still brings in the big busts. Once Daniel has crossed the line the film takes a darker debauched turn and it's all about sex and blackmail, with most of the action taking place in brothels. To outdo the other brothels Daniel and the Twins build their own high class brothel 'Imperiun' and take blackmail to a higher plain. High status people including politicians, celebrities and even a plastic surgeon are exploited. The title Petla, translates to Noose and as the saying goes given enough rope you can hang yourself and it's not long before a scorned woman takes revenge on Daniel, who has by now become addicted to sex and drugs. Starting to sound a bit far fetched?, incredibly it turns out to be based on a true story. I enjoyed the first half more than the second but it's still very underrated imo

A man providing overnight watch to a deceased member of his former Orthodox Jewish community finds himself opposite a malevolent entity, in writer-director Keith Thomas' electrifying feature debut.

Director: Keith Thomas | Stars: Dave Davis, Menashe Lustig, Malky Goldman, Lynn Cohen

Votes: 9,803

There have been many horror films about babysitters, even a dog or house sitter but I've not seen one about a body sitter before. Here we have a story set in the 'Boro' Jewish community in Brooklyn, and a troubled man who has turned his back on the faith gets paid to be a Shomer for the night, watching over the body of a man that survived the holocaust but picked up an evil spirit. Things go bump in the night to good effect and the films score adds some great tension. Being a very Jewish film, half of the dialogue is in yiddish, makes a change from Latin at least. Dave Davis plays Yakov a Jewish man that is struggling to cope with his new path outside of the orthodox order and haunted by a family tragedy that he blames himself for. Yakov has to survive a night of strange visions and not let them drag him into a new nightmare. This is a slow burn but solidly creepy little horror film. Worth a look if you like your horror films with religious mysticism.

As the title suggests it's about builders of dreams, a bit like Inception for kids oin monsters Inc kind of way. Excellent animation with a simple but effective story

36. Birds of Prey (2020)

R | 109 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

Director: Cathy Yan | Stars: Margot Robbie, Rosie Perez, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett

Votes: 264,743 | Gross: $84.16M

Harley Quinn returns with a bang, smash and wallop !, this is a colourful film with lots of action, fights and funny moments. HQ is loud and wild but meets up with some other badass girls to make for a great girl gang as Margot Robbie wanted. I think reviews are going to be divided on this apart from maybe agreeing it's better than Suicide Squad?

This is obviously a satirical biography of Philip Green, lol. I wonder if he will sue? There is a lot going on in this film, Greed obviously, financially clever exploitation and even refugees and unfortunately it doesn't work out too well as a whole. There are funny moments and also serious issues raised but somehow it seems like this should have been one or the other instead of both. The cast is also a bit hit and miss too, David Mitchell being the surprise hit imo, Steve Coogan is pretty good too but most of the cast are pretty lacklustre. A film that might struggle to find an audience outside of the UK and even the British humour might fail at home too?

As Seth Rogan films go, it's not a total disaster, (I am not a big fan). Starts out well with some good simple gags in the 1919 Eastern Europe setting, but it shifts to America and then loses its way? There's a mishmash of humour styles ranging from silly borderline farce to cultural satire. It's also the second Yiddish film of the week for me, The Vigil tapped into the Jewish horror well and this dabbles with Jewish comedy?, with an emphasis on family history and togetherness., although I felt that a section of the story had been edited out?. It is obviously an absurd idea that a man could by cryogenically preserved in a pickle process for 100 years but the 'Scientists' explain that away with some graphs, so it's all sound. Pickled Rogen, Herschel Greenbaum, meets great-grandson Ben Greenbaum in modern day New York and there's some wonderment / fish out of water humour, but not as much as I expected. Between them and their rival beliefs they poke fun at hipster culture, religions and elements of social media, but these gags are very hit and miss, mainly miss to be honest. There seemed to be journeys signposted but not traveled. 55/100

Yes curiosity got the better of me. But curiosity didn't kill this Cats. I didn't really think it was that bad, yes there are demerit points for SOME of the CGi and some of the camera work and a few of the cast but in the main the cast of good actors put in good performances and the singing and dancing are entertaining, and I generally don't like musicals. Anyhoo 5.5/10 imo, if I saw it last year it wouldn't have been in my top 100 or my bottom 10 either. Ratings of 1/10 are ridiculous imo

Dolittle, well it did do little for me. A good cast and Robert Downey Jr, but had a tough job to be convincing, charming or engaging. I think I might have fallen asleep for a few minutes here and there. A very colourful film with some great CGi but lacklustre in everything else.

I wanted to like this and I would have preferred subtitles and the original Italian because the English dubbing just didn't seem right. There's a lot more to this adaptation than the 1940s Disney animation but sadly less is more in this case, especially because there's a lot without charm, I just didn't break into a smile for the whole 2 hours.

Maybe I should check what a film is about before hand after all !? To me this was a channel 5 afternoon movie, mediocre story and mostly mediocre actors apart from the guy playing Hardon Scott, who is absolutely terrible. Sad yo say this was not my cup of tea. 9 1/2 weeks for teenagers?
