There is something about the period of the Napoleonic Wars and the personality of Napoleon Bonaparte himself that keeps world-renowned filmmakers returning to the subject. Maybe it's the aesthetics of the early 19th century and the epic battles of the time. Maybe it's the fascination of the life of the great French general and emperor that ambitious filmmakers are drawn to.
Whatever the reason, each of these films either failed commercially or received mixed reviews from critics. Abel Gance's Napoleon, Sergei Bondarchuk's War and Peace and Waterloo, Peter Weir's Master and Commander, and of course Ridley Scott's recent Napoleon – despite epic scales, a talented cast and crew, and sometimes even a great script, all of the above films failed in one way or another.

The red carpet will soon roll out for the 77th Festival de Cannes. The international film festival, playing out May 14-25, has a distinct American voice this year. “Barbie” filmmaker Greta Gerwig is the first U.S. female director name jury president. Many veteran American helmers are heading to the French Rivera resort town. George Lucas, who turns 80 on May 14, will receive an honorary Palme d’Or. Francis Ford Coppola’s much-anticipated “Megalopolis” is screening in competition, as is Paul Schrader’s “Oh Canada.” Kevin Costner’s new Western “Horizon, An American Saga” will premiere out of competition and Oliver Stone’s “Lula” is part of the special screening showcase.
Fifty years ago, Coppola was the toast of the 27th Cannes Film Festival. His brilliant psychological thriller “The Conversation” starring Gene Hackman won the Palme D’Or and well as a Special Mention from the Ecumenical Jury. The film would earn three Oscar nominations: picture,...

Photo credit: “Shutterstock.AI” Before the courtroom erupted with that iconic line, A Few Good Men began as a stage play by a then-unknown writer, Aaron Sorkin. Its gripping story caught Hollywood’s attention, attracting A+ talent: Rob Reiner to direct, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, and Tom Cruise to star. Talk about star power! Stepping into the role of Lt. Daniel Kaffee presented a unique challenge for Cruise. At the time of the film’s release, Kaffee wasn’t like the rigid military characters he’d previously portrayed. Remaking a 2002 Hong Kong hit and setting the story in Irish-Catholic Boston, Martin Scorsese seemed to be out of his element with The Departed—if not, that is, for the fact that the film marked a return to the director’s bread-and-butter mean streets, and that his source material, Wai Keung Lau and Siu Fai Mak’s Infernal Affairs, was itself heavily influenced by his iconic gangster films. Something of a genre homecoming after recent detours into the arenas of the historical epic (Gangs of New York) and the period biopic (The Aviator), The Departed again found him trawling a gritty, brutal urban underbelly where racial epithets spit from roughnecks’ mouths, class divisions are as sharp as a switchblade, and allegiances to others and one’s self are always tenuous at best.

It’s been more than fifty years since The Godfather was released and instantly became the cinema’s biggest cult classic, but all of its actors may have unconsciously merged with their roles, whatever projects they would signed up for.
Here it’s Al Pacino that comes as the most striking example: after the actor starred as Vito Corleone’s youngest son Michael, Al Pacino turned into Michael and Michael turned into Al Pacino — as simple as that.
Despite the fact that right now nobody can imagine Al Pacino being replaced by another actor in The Godfather, this option was more than possible back then and eventually got canceled at the last minute — by the main challenger himself.
Though it’s hard to believe it these days, back in the day it was Jack Nicholson who The Godfather’s director Francis Ford Coppola was strongly considering for Michael Corleone’s role.

Christian Slater currently stars in Roku’s The Spiderwick Chronicles as Mulgarath, an extremely powerful ogre who can shape-shift into any form he wants, whether human or animal. The actor recently revealed that he had no idea about the creator’s inspiration behind the character, but it turned out to be something that he loved for years.

The franchise was helmed as a movie in 2008 starring Freddie Highmore and was based on the book series The Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black. It received generally favorable reviews, though it’s quite sad that it has long been forgotten by people as the years went by.

There are not many movies that earn the status of all-time golden gems. It's the movies like The Godfather, Citizen Kane, Jaws and a few others that you've definitely seen not once, but many times over the years.
It seems that every genre has its own staple films that are considered the best to this day. And it's no wonder that when it comes to horror, it's Stephen King and the movies based on his novels that we celebrate the most.
One of such is definitely 1980 The Shining, Stanley Kubrick‘s movie featuring Jack Nicholson as a recovering alcoholic who loses his mind. The movie is one of the most valued in the industry, both for the gripping story it tells and for the excellent performance from all the cast members.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have collaborated on a number of projects together as actor and director. Beginning their partnership with Gangs of New York, the duo went on to work on films such as The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and the recent Killers of the Flower Moon. The duo are also rumored to collaborate again on a Frank Sinatra biopic.
While the two have worked together on many projects, they have also developed projects that have never seen the light of day. One of those was apparently a biographical drama on Alexander, The Great. The two never got to make it, but the duo may have no regrets about it as Colin Farrell’s version of the film ended up almost costing the actor his career.

Quentin Tarantino has been a voice of authority in the film industry for decades. His opinions may not always be popular, but they always command respect.
It's almost impossible to remember a time before his innovative style of filmmaking, with its witty dialogue, stylized violence and non-linear narratives. But back in the early 90s, he was an unknown trying to make his way in the film world.
It all started at a barbecue?
In 1992, Quentin Tarantino burst onto the movie scene with a heist movie that was the result of a chance meeting with producer Lawrence Bender at a barbecue. He completed the first draft in less than a month and, after impressing Bender, was able to secure financing to move the project forward.
And so, Reservoir Dogs was born.

Jack Nicholson has been in retirement for a while now. Taking a cue from the title of the last movie he appeared in, 2010’s “How Do You Know,” how do we know? When I talked to Nicholson for this reunion with director James L. Brooks – an unfortunate flop – I asked him why he waited three years to do another movie after his hit, “The Bucket List.” His response: “I’ve been reading scripts. Yes, they are all very similar. You just keep getting these stories about retirement, or the wife dying on you or going to Vegas. I’m definitely at the stage where I just don’t want to make another movie.”

Firefighters responded to a call Thursday night at the Oregon hotel that was featured in director Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic, The Shining.
The film used aerial shots of the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon as part of its opening scene, and for exterior establishing shots.
The Oregonian reported a portion of the Lodge caught on fire at around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Clackamas Fire Department shared that the fire was declared under control at about 11:12 Pm.
“The fire was kept to the roof & part of the attic, & didn’t spread any further. Crews are clearing the scene. The U.S. Forest Service will be conducting the investigation with the help of federal resources,” the firefighter account wrote, adding several photos of the scene.
No injuries were reported.

After a decades-long wait, it was 2006’s The Departed that earned Martin Scorsese his first Oscar win for Best Director, presented by the iconic trio of Coppola, Spielberg, and Lucas. Apart from Scorsese’s deserved victory, the thriller, based on the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, further swooped four accolades in the 79th Academy Award, including Best Picture.
But while Scorsese intended it to be a one-off thing, Mark Wahlberg, who starred as Sergeant Dignam, had ideas about continuing the story with a sequel, starring Brad Pitt and Robert De Niro.

Martin Scorsese’s history with the Academy Awards hasn’t always been cheerful, but the veteran filmmaker managed to grab one for The Departed in 2007. The Boston-set crime thriller exposed the many institutional problems with crime fighting. By the end of the film, all the ‘rats’ end up dead, sending a clear message about the film’s themes to the viewers. However, Warner Bros. wasn’t exactly thrilled that Scorsese killed off the stars of the film.

Horror movies are often intense experiences, sometimes not just for the audience but also for the cast and crew making them behind-the-scenes. From maintaining raw emotions on high for effective performances to less than ideal filming conditions, making a horror movie can be grueling work, to the point that some actors occasionally regret starring in them.
On top of the heightened rigors of the job, the attention to gruesome detail in capturing such visceral material can literally make the actors on set sick to their stomachs. There are numerous horror movies that went so hard that they made the actors involved physically ill during the production. This ranges from the physical extremes of method acting and abusively megalomaniacal directors to actors becoming severely sick during filming. However, no matter the ailment, the show must go on, often with those afflicted actors' performances in the final film. Here are the biggest...

But not because he wasn’t interested in working with the director he’d long revered, Sutherland explained. “I thought it was one of my friends making a joke.”
During Sutherland’s appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television panel alongside producers Annabelle Dunne and Matt Parker, Sutherland revealed that Friedkin had exerted a powerful influence on his professional path from an early age.

Veteran star Jack Nicholson has redefined the art of acting in Hollywood. With a wide variety of challenging roles in his impressive filmography, the Oscar winner has proved that he is the yardstick for any aspiring actor in terms of how to approach a performance on screen. The Shining actor has also been known to involve himself deeply in the filmmaking process.

There are demanding directors, and then there's Stanley Kubrick. He was notoriously picky about his work, pushing his actors through take after take in the name of perfection. This meant that whatever ended up on the screen eventually was his ideal vision and often it was some truly brilliant stuff — but at what cost? It's one thing to want your work to be its best possible version but another entirely to basically torture people to make that happen. Kubrick was especially challenging to work with on his 1980 horror film "The Shining," based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, forcing stars Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall through all kinds of misery in the name of his nightmarish epic. He was tough on Nicholson, putting the actor through at least 60 takes for an 8-minute sequence in a bathroom, but he was much harder on Duvall, abusing her verbally in...

Ripped action stars have been around since the '80s when Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone battled it out to see who had the bigger muscles, the most guns, and who could beat up the most bad guys. These days, being in peak physical shape for a role is pretty much the norm. Unfortunately, this has meant many actors feel more pressure than ever to get in the best possible shape, often leading them to follow dodgy and dangerous methods in pursuit of the ideal movie star physique.
For example, it's been reported that Marvel molds actors into superhero shape using a controversial source. Health expert Dr. Todd Schroeder, who was interviewed for the book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios," claimed that "fifty to seventy-five percent" of Marvel Cinematic Universe actors take steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), "at least for the short term." American author Stephen King is much loved by his fans for crafting some of the most iconic horror stories. The author has written many cult classics like It, The Shining, Pet Sematary, The Outsider, and more.
His books have also inspired multiple TV and film productions, with the 1980s The Shining, starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, being the most popular. Hence, it’s no surprise that the 76-year-old writer is considered an authority in the horror genre.
Most recently, King shared his take on a 2024 horror film which received an abysmal Rotten Tomatoes rating of just 21%. The author disagreed with critics’ opinions about the film.

“The present came to a halt,” Bertrand Bonello writes in an ode to his teen daughter in his experimental feature Coma, “leaving us with the past and the future.” Much of this subtitled text refers to the specific circumstances of the film’s creation during the pandemic. Yet the French filmmaker’s follow-up, The Beast, which was developed before Coma but shot afterward, feels like a natural extension of his fascination with the scrambled perception of time in a digital era. In Bonello’s time-warping adaptation of Henry James’s 1903 novella The Beast in the Jungle, the present day is the Paris of 2044, where landscape and character have been warped by advances in artificial intelligence.
What’s evergreen, as a repeated aural motif so often reminds, is the twisted relationship of fear and love between Gabrielle (Léa Seydoux) and Louis (George MacKay). Bonello gives us a glance at two of...

While he was researching subjects for his next book in 2022, writer-producer-author Burt Kearns noted that the centennial of Marlon Brando’s birth was coming up: April 3, 2024 (this past Wednesday). At the same time, he understood that the world didn’t need another Brando biography. “There had already been so many of those,” Kearns notes, “including one that Brando himself collaborated on.” Yet he was fascinated by the actor (who died in 2004) who perfected The Method. And as a longtime journalist, the more Kearns dug into the life and career of Brando, the more astounded he grew at the influence the acting legend had on Western society, popular culture and the American psyche.
“And it all goes back to Brando’s role in the 1953 film ‘The Wild One’,” Kearns asserts, “and that singular image.”
The image of which the author speaks is the one of Brando that graces the cover of his fascinating new book,...

It turns out that Morgan Freeman’s first big break in show business was just kid’s stuff. After working in a few unmemorable productions, Freeman caught on with PBS’s The Electric Company, a show from the Children’s Television Workshop designed to teach basic reading skills to kids from 7 to 10 years old. The gig ran for six seasons and 780 episodes.
He next grabbed attention in 1980 with performances in Brubaker with Robert Redford and TV movie Attica, he broke out in Street Smart, which earned him the first of five Academy Award nominations. Freeman received Best Actor nominations for Oscar-winning Driving Miss Daisy (1989) and The Shawshank Redemption (1994) before winning for his Best Supporting Actor role in Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby (2004). He also received a Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in Invictius (2009).

Michael Keaton’s portrayal of Batman in the 1989 film and its 1992 sequel remains legendary, but what many don’t realize is that his casting initially sparked major controversy. Batman has always been one of the most beloved characters for comic readers, and making a movie about such a character was a difficult task, to say the least. And when Keaton was cast, people couldn’t envision Gotham City’s protector being entrusted to a comedic actor.
When Tim Burton chose Keaton, many were skeptical and lashed out. However, this decision not only became significant in Batman history but also played a crucial role in Mark Hamill voicing the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series!

Michael Keaton admits it was a "ballsy move" by Tim Burton to cast him as Batman. The 72-year-old actor first played the Caped Crusader in Burton's 1989 superhero film 'Batman' and acknowledged that the filmmaker had taken a risk by selecting him for the part after it was met with an angry backlash by fans.In a career retrospective interview for GQ magazine, Michael recalled: "When they said, 'We're thinking of doing Batman', I said, 'Wait, you're thinking of making a movie about Batman?'"The fact that Tim said, 'That guy, I want that guy'... The fact that people cared one way or another so much is still baffling. The classic mystery Chinatown is heading to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK this June: here’s more information on the release.
How about this for a flat-out classic? 1974’s Chinatown remains one of the very, very, very best films of Jack Nicholson’s career. A neo-noir detective mystery penned by Robert Towne. Nicholson plays Jake Gittes in the film, and in the 50 years since its release has garnered a reputation as being one of the best films of all time.
Directed by rapist Roman Polanski, it co-stars Faye Dunaway, John Huston, Diane Ladd and Perry Lopez. There’s an extensive cast to enjoy, and a tight mystery at the heart of it too. Genuinely, if you’ve never had the pleasure, it’s a film that deserves its reputation.
(Its belated sequel, The Two Jakes, was directed by Jack Nicholson and is worth a look too, although inevitably...

Michael Keaton recalls the initial reaction that comic book fans had when he was chosen to portray Batman in the 1989 Tim Burton-directed film.
Until then, Batman had been a character on a campy television series. However, Batman would mark a before and after for the superhero movie genre.

Michael Keaton participated in a career retrospective interview for GQ magazine and admitted that his casting as Batman in Tim Burton’s 1989 superhero movie was “ballsy” considering he was more known for his comedic roles in films like “Mr. Mom” at that point in his career. Keaton’s casting was met with backlash among comic book fans at the time. The actor had already worked with Burton on 1998’s comedy “Beetlejuice.”

Recently, we had the chance to sit down with Michael Keaton and chat about his new movie, Knox Goes Away, which he also directs. In the interview, which is really fascinating, Keaton remembers the controversy that surrounded his casting initially by director Tim Burton, which he calls a “ballsy move.”
For those who may not have been around in 1988, when Keaton’s casting was first announced, may fans hated him getting the role as his career up to that point had largely been focused on comedy roles. Indeed, he had many comedy hits in the 80s, including Night Shift, Johnny Dangerously, Gung Ho, The Dream Team, and Beetlejuice. Robin Williams was one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood, who was known more for his comedic roles. Films such as Jumanji, Dead Poets Society, and Mrs. Doubtfire have featured the actor and Williams’ presence has made them certified classics. The late actor was also known for his dramatic roles in films such as Good Will Hunting, for which he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
While Williams initially started his career with comedic roles, a rumor made the rounds that the actor was considered for the sinister role of Jack Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. While Jack Nicholson ended up playing the role, Williams was rumored to have been considered by Kubrick before seeing him in Mork & Mindy. However, Lee Unkrich’s new book on the film reportedly debunked the rumor and mentioned that Williams had no chance.

Superhero culture has come a long way since the 1980s, when making a movie about a comic book character who inspired a campy TV was considered a questionable decision for a studio. But while Tim Burton’s “Batman” was a risk, the Michael Keaton-led film reinvented the superhero movie genre and paved the way for many of the 21st century’s biggest blockbusters.
While Keaton was safe from the toxic online discourse that swarms many contemporary superhero casting announcements these days, he still remembers that comic book fans weren’t thrilled to see him donning Batman’s cape and cowl. In a new video interview with GQ, Keaton recalled his initial shock about being cast in the role and the movie’s unlikely road to success.

When you think about improvisation in movies, you might initially think of comedies — the kind that come with blooper reels that are often just as good as the movie itself. We've all spent an inordinate amount of time watching and rewatching "The Office" bloopers or marveling at the unhinged absurdity of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly's extemporaneous efforts in the "Step Brothers" blooper reel. Heck, you might even think of Chris Hemsworth improvising Thor lines.
But improv isn't, of course, just a comedic tool. Throughout the history of cinema, actors have embraced spontaneity to add an extra level of realism to their performances. Just look at Jack Nicholson and that famous "Here's Johnny" line from "The Shining." Then, there's Harrison Ford, who improvised one particular Indiana Jones moment in 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," adding a touch of levity to the action-adventure classic.
But just a year later,...

When it comes to psychological horror films, few have achieved the chilling impact and critical acclaim of Anthony Hopkins‘ The Silence of the Lambs. With its gripping narrative and spine-tingling atmosphere, the film has rightfully earned its place among the greatest in cinematic history, earning five Oscars and widespread acclaim.

Yet, amidst the crowd of horror classics, there exists a film that goes beyond mere scares, into the realm of controversy and legal turmoil that few filmmakers dare to tread. Director Ang Lee is finally pointing the finger.
Lee told IndieWire in a recent interview that his Brokeback Mountain losing the Academy Awards Best Picture to Crash in 2006 was because of discrimination against a gay love story.
“Back then, [‘Brokeback Mountain’] had a ceiling. We got a lot of support — up to that much,” he said. “It has that feeling. I wasn’t holding a grudge or anything. It’s just how they were,” Lee said of the Academy at the time.
Brokeback Mountain did win three other Oscars that year for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay for Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, and Best Original Score for Gustavo Santaolalla.
Ang remembered coming off the stage after accepting his Best Director award.
“I got my award, which was [second to] last to the big one, and I was walking off the stage, they called me down, and said, stay here. That’s your mark.
