It's fair to say that, since 2016's Star Trek Beyond, the big and small screen incarnations of the venerable sci-fi franchise have certainly diverged in terms of output. While the films have been seemingly stuck in dry dock as different options are announced, only to fail to appear, the TV universe has exploded in all sorts of interesting directions. Part of the Paramount+ success appears to be having Alex Kurtzman as a producing/writing guiding light, and it seems that Paramount's studio division is aiming to have someone take over the film side in a similar capacity. That someone? Simon Kinberg.

"Star Trek" has just added a new captain to Starfleet's prestigious ranks, and she's definitely worthy of wearing the uniform. Even as the franchise is undergoing some change on the television side of things, as "Discovery" speeds headlong towards its last couple of episodes in its final season and the animated "Lower Decks" is similarly coming to a close, fans will have another new series to look forward to -- and no less than an Oscar-winning actor is now attached as the lead.

In 2019, Sandra Oh simultaneously received her seventh and eighth acting Emmy nominations for “Killing Eve” (drama lead) and “Saturday Night Live” (comedy guest). Five years later, her performance bid total is set to reach an even dozen thanks to her respective lead and supporting performances in the telefilm “Quiz Lady” and the limited series “The Sympathizer.” Earning TV academy recognition for these two roles would make her the eighth woman to compete for both possible limited program acting awards at once.
In “Quiz Lady,” which premiered on Hulu last November, Oh plays Jenny Yum, a vivacious yet reckless woman who reunites with her estranged younger sister (Awkwafina) to resolve their mother’s gambling debts. “The Sympathizer,” which began airing on HBO in April, features her in the role of Sofia Mori, a 1970s Japanese American secretary who becomes entangled with a communist spy (Hoa Xuande).

You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”

Settle in, Mother Scratchers! We’re going back to the salad days of Joel and Ethan Coen‘s fabled partnership for the duo’s unconventional comedy about an unlikely courtship, unwanted house guests, a cigar-chomping pale rider, the best deals on furniture in the Southwestern portion of the United States, and baby stealing! At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. In a recent interview with Oprah as part of the “OWN Spotlight” series, Angela Bassett admitted she was “gobsmacked” when she lost the Oscar for supporting actress last year. Bassett was nominated for her performance in Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” She had won the Globe Globe and Critics Choice Award, but the supporting actress race remained somewhat open leading into Oscar night as Curtis won the SAG Award for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and Kerry Condon won the BAFTA for “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Curtis ended up winning the Oscar.

Kal Penn admits he didn’t know much about Anna Nicole Smith’s physician, Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, before he was approached to star as the doctor in the indie adaptation of his memoir, “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor.”
“But then I read the doctor’s autobiography and found it interesting and compelling,” Penn told me Monday night at the South Asians at the Oscars party on the Paramount lot.
Variety’s Tatiana Siegel exclusively reported Feb. 23 that Penn is set to portray Sandeep in “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor,” which chronicles Smith’s final days before dying of an accidental overdose in 2007 at the age of 39.
It’s been two decades since an epic fantasy film made history at the Oscars, winning every category in which it was nominated, and three women set new records. There weren’t many surprises at the 76th Academy Awards, but there were some memorable moments. Billy Crystal hosted for his eighth time on February 29, 2004. Read on for Gold Derby’s Oscars flashback 20 years ago to 2004.
It was finally Peter Jackson‘s time as the third installment of his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy earned him a trio of awards. Despite numerous nominations, the first two films failed to make big showings; however, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” not only claimed Best Picture, but won all 11 categories in which it was nominated. It tied with “Ben-Hur” (1960) and “Titanic” (1998) for most wins in one ceremony, and holds the record for biggest sweep. It was the 10th film...

Trust Me, I’m a Doctor takes place during the final days leading up to her death, and is based off of her doctor, Dr Sandeep Kapoor‘s, 2017 book of the same name.
According to Variety, the upcoming movie “follows Smith’s pain-medication doctor whose life was turned upside down when he was implicated in the wrongful death trials of the one-time Playboy centerfold.”
Anna‘s death was ruled an accidental drug overdose of chloral hydrate, which became more toxic combined with other prescription drugs in her system.

Robert Downey Jr. won the best supporting actor in a movie award at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday night. Following an awards season full of comedic acceptance speeches by the actor, he took a moment to list off actors (and his wife) that inspired him throughout the years.
“This is actually incredibly meaningful to me, thank you very much,” Downey Jr. said. “Why me? Why now? Why do things seem to be going my way? Unlike my fellow nominees, I will never grow tired from the sound of my own voice.”
Downey Jr., who won for his role as Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, continued: “I’m going to do a name check. I have Chris Nolan in my ear. Basically the only note he gave me, ‘maybe just one with nothing on it.’ Teri Garr, James Spader, Anthony Michael Hall, Mel Gibson, Whoopi Goldberg, Alfre Woodard,...

Kal Penn is set to star in “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor,” a film that chronicles the final days of the actress and model whose accidental overdose death in 2007 at the age of 39 sparked a tabloid feeding frenzy. “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor,” which is based on Dr. Sandeep Kapoor’s 2017 book of the same name, marks the second film about Smith to move forward in recent months. Ethan Coen's queer roadtrip film "Drive-Away Dolls" is set in 1997, and feels like an escapee from that era, for better and for worse. On the one hand, it possesses all the impish, make-the-straights-squirm energy of a legit '90s indie lesbian farce. It is not just upfront about its queerness, but confrontationally playful about it. "Drive-Away Dolls" unapologetically and cartoonishly plunges audiences into lesbian basement make-out parties and rowdy gay bars, flinging about cunnilingus jokes, masturbation scenes, and multiple on-screen dildos with gleeful impunity. It's a lightweight, weirdly teen-friendly (but very R-rated) slumber party movie with an upbeat and liberating "be gay, do crime" vibe. It's a queer, hand grenade-shaped squeak toy.
On the other hand, however, "Drive-Away Dolls" is being released in 2024, and the very fact that it depicts queer characters having queer sex and talking about queer issues isn't nearly as confrontational as it once was. There...

The Coen brothers broke up four years ago, and it has taken them a while to come out with solo albums that define their identities. In 2021, Joel Coen directed “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which was a dazzling black-and-white pastiche of a Shakespeare drama. It was well-done but felt like a one-off, a decision by Coen to serve the material. One year later, Ethan Coen came out with “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind,” a small-scale rock ‘n’ roll documentary that he made during the pandemic; it was a YouTube clip job, and on those terms expertly crafted — but even after Jerry Lee died (five months after the film’s Cannes premiere), it took ages for the film to be released.
Now, though, we finally have a Coen movie in which one of the brothers puts his solo stamp on filmmaking. “Drive-Away Dolls,” directed by Ethan Coen, is a crime-speckled road-trip...

The legendary sibling directing duo of Joel and Ethan Coen went their separate directorial ways after the 2018 film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and while there’s talk they’re going to be reuniting to make a horror movie, in the meantime we’ve gotten Joel’s first solo directing effort with The Tragedy of Macbeth, and we’ll be seeing Ethan’s first solo directing effort when Focus Features brings the road trip comedy caper Drive Away Dolls to theatres on February 23rd. Some critics have already had a chance to see the movie, and with two weeks to go until its wide release, the first reactions have started showing up online. We have gathered some of them together below.
First, we have a reaction from JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray:

Hollywood star Mark Ruffalo went down memory lane and recalled his humble beginnings when he was waiting tables and had to travel everywhere by his budget motorbike that he would fix himself whenever it broke down.
“I couldn’t afford a car. I had a $250 1974 Honda XR250 that I could personally work on when it broke down that was the only way I could get around LA. I was living in a closet for $200. My whole nut was about $300 a month,” he said on the “SmartLess” podcast.
On the years it took him to get a foot in the door in Hollywood, he said: “It was a very slow progression. There’s really no reason that I should have tried as long as I did because that was from 18 to 28.”
Ruffalo was fired from the play that would have supposedly launched his career.

In the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, 88 films have each received nominations for both Best Actor and Best Actress. Although there have been 19 cases of two or more movies doing so in a single year, there hasn’t been such an occurrence since 1996, when both lead lineups included performers from “Dead Man Walking” and “Leaving Las Vegas.” However, according to Gold Derby’s late-stage 2024 Oscar nominations predictions, that nearly three-decade gap is set to soon be closed by costar pairs from “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Maestro.”
The vast majority of the Oscars prognosticators who’ve been shaping our odds all season agree that Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”) will all clinch academy mentions for their lead performances. The last such quartet consisted of eventual winners Nicolas Cage (“Leaving Las Vegas”) and Susan Sarandon (“Dead Man Walking”) and their respective costars,...

After appearing in the majority of “Succession” episodes, Hiam Abbass is finally an Emmy nominee. The actress recurred in all four seasons of the HBO series as Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) wife Marcia, even as their relationship was rocked by Logan’s affairs with Rhea Jarrell — who could forget Abbass’s shakedown of Holly Hunter? — and others. Abbass returned for two episodes of the final season, for which she nabbed a bid for Best Drama Guest Actress. Could she prevail on her very first try?
To do so, Abbass will have to best a formidable group of contenders, including two others from her own show. Cherry Jones reprised her Emmy-winning character Nan Pierce from the second season of “Succession” in the fourth season premiere and earned her fifth career bid, while Harriet Walter has earned her third nomination for “Succession,” and fifth overall, as Logan’s former wife and...

“You never know if they like you for who you are or what you are,” Anna Nicole Smith once said before she passed away from an accidental drug overdose in 2007. Franchising is basically the bread and butter of the horror genre. It doesn't matter what critics think. It doesn't even matter if the iconic central villain is killed at the end of the movie. Where there's a will, there's a way -- and writers can always be persuaded to come up with new explanations for why their characters are put back in similarly horrific scenarios.
Within the genre, you could make the argument that sequels are the rule rather than the exception, and even subpar horror films often end up becoming franchises, whether their follow-up films are given a theatrical release or not. (Direct-to-video sequels are also a long-term staple for scary movies.) This is especially true for teen horror movies, since younger audiences have always been a target demographic for these types of films.
But every once in a while, you get a teen horror flick that's one-and-done, without a sequel on the horizon.

Emma Thompson has turned in a host of eclectic, effective, excellent performances throughout her illustrious career. She started out with period dramas such as “Howards End” and “The Remains of the Day” before later moving into fantasy with roles in “Nanny McPhee” and “Harry Potter.” Add to that top-tier performances in the likes of “Sense and Sensibility,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” “Cruella,” and “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” and you’ve got one hell of a performer.
However, Thompson has stated herself that the role she gets the most praise for is actually… “Love Actually.” The classic Richard Curtis Christmas movie, which turns 20 this year, tells the interconnected love stories of eight different sets of people with Thompson delivering the most emotional and heartbreaking storyline of all of them. Thompson’s Karen is an under-appreciated stay-at-home mother who spends her days looking after the kids, making costumes for their school nativity,...

Urban legends are mostly just that, the stuff of legends. They can inspire some people to do horrifying things and create urban legends of their own. Very often, these stories get the movie or show treatment whether they hue close to anything factual or not. One of the most famous examples of this urban legend which has a serial killer acting out some of the most famously told tales. Often movies that use the “inspired by” tag don’t have much to do with their source material like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre being merely inspired by Ed Gein. What happens when a legend inspires a movie and then the real story comes out years later?...

The British drama The King’s Speech won best picture, best lead actor, best director and best original screenplay honors at the 83rd Academy Awards, which was impressive for See-Saw Films co-founder Iain Canning, as the British drama was his company’s first movie out of the gates.
“That was my first producing credit,” Canning told a Toronto Film Festival panel Saturday before, despite the success of the British drama, recounting the sweat and toil for the startup production company to get the film made.
For starters, the exchange rate went against See-Saw during the development of The King’s Speech. Period dramas were out of fashion among film buyers at the time, apparently, and a key financier pulled out of the project at the eleventh hour.

In the entire 95-year history of the Academy Awards, only one woman has been nominated for the Best Director Oscar twice: Jane Campion for “The Piano” (1993 nominee) and “The Power of the Dog” (2021 winner). The other six females to contend for directing are Lina Wertmuller for “Seven Beauties” (1976 nominee), Sofia Coppola for “Lost in Translation” (2003 nominee), Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker” (2009 winner), Greta Gerwig for “Lady Bird” (2017 nominee), Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland” (2020 winner) and Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman” (2020 nominee). At the upcoming 2024 Oscars, Campion’s record as the only female to reap two separate director mentions could be matched if “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig earns her second bid.
Campion received her first Best Director nom for “The Piano,” about a mute piano player. The New Zealander lost to Steven Spielberg for “Schindler’s List” but did not go home empty-handed that year, as she won the Best Original Screenplay award.
