Sometimes summer nights call out for a deep dive into nostalgic cinematographic homages. “Manila”, a 2009 movie directed by Adolf Alix Jr. and Raya Martin, might be just the perfect choice, accompanying us with an ode to Filipino cinema. The film was screened as part of unique, out-of-competition screenings at the 31st Moscow International Film Festival and the 62nd Cannes Film Festival.
By independent directors Raya Martin and Adolfo Alix Jr., the movie pays their homage to masterpieces of Filipino neorealism “City After Dark“, also known as “Manila by Night” (1980) by Ishmael Bernal and “Jaguar” (1979) by Lino Brocka. The project perfectly succeeds in its goal to open the door for a new audience to learn about the wonderful works of the old masters.
The social environment that Manila provided for those topics hasn't changed all that much in the last three decades, after all. A disconnected, dialogue-free montage separates the two short films,...

After the success of her directorial debut “Tanikala” (1980), Marilou Diaz-Abaya was approached by producer Jesse Ejercito to direct a film for him starring Amy Austria, who had recently distinguished herself in the 1979 Lino Brocka film “Jaguar”. I am not sure if what Abaya came up with was exactly what Ejercito and Austria had in mind, since “Brutal” was actually the first Filipino film to tackle rape as a feminist issue, but the result justified their efforts, with the movie winning Best Director and Best Actress in the Metro Manila Film Festival of the same year.
The film begins with the arrest of the protagonist Monica Real, after the murder of her husband and four of his friends, in a case that immediately catches the eye of the public and the press, becoming highly publicized. Clara Valdez, a journalist who is in a relationship with Jake, a divorced man who keeps comparing her with his ex-wife,...

Filled with plenty of high-quality and impressive works throughout the year, Asian countries produced a sparkling amount of Horror content for 2019. Indonesia took massive steps forward with a variety of productions that showed that a lot of impressive filmmaking talent was residing in the country. South Korea continued their impressive run of masterclass filmmaking that show they are capable of making spectacle on par with the best US blockbusters.
By contrast, the grittiness and less refined if no less impressive works coming from India and the Philippines also surprised as those stand out for their different nature. With the schlocky, over-the-top nature of Japanese entries rounding out the list, the year produced many notable and noteworthy genre efforts.
Without further ado, and with a focus on diversity, here are the best horror/exploitation films of 2019, in reverse order. Some films may have premiered in 2018, but since they mostly circulated in 2019, we decided to include them.

Taiwan’s legalization of gay marriage last year helpfully came in time for the real-world launch of the Gol Summit, Asia’s largest LGBTQ+ filmmaking conference. That in turn helped maintain the momentum for a second edition that, due to the coronavirus pandemic, will be a fully virtual affair.
The event, which runs Monday and Tuesday is backed by the GagaOOLala streaming platform, launched by Taiwan studio Portico Media, in collaboration with the Taiwan Content Creative Agency (Taicca). The Gol Summit is also one of the first events this year in a series that makes up the 2020 Taiwan Creative Content Fest International Market (Tccf).
The focus of the first day is the GagaOOLala Pitching Sessions, aimed at bringing together financiers, distributors and sales agents around some 15 new pieces of LGBTQ content – features, series and shorts.

Folklore, mythology, and fairy tales share a lot in common with horror, namely in how monsters or creatures can be representative of humans’ darker nature, and also in how the fantastical contains a morality lesson within. Such is the case with Adolfo Alix Jr.’s Mystery of the Night, a slow-burn fable set in a 1900s Spanish-ruled Philippine village—a period when aristocracy and clergymen tried to cover up their misdeeds, and their corruption begets inconceivable horrors.
An adaptation of Rody Vera’s stage play Ang Unang Aswang, Alix Jr. uses a theatrical, shadow puppet style title sequence to introduce some of the folkloric elements of the film. The colonized village sits adjacent to an enchanted forest, where those who enter rarely come back alive. If they do, they’re irrevocably changed, as the forest is protected by animalistic spirits. When a village woman is raped and left pregnant and raving mad,...

Skeptical critics always think that the time to sing the death of the Filipino new wave cinema has arrived. But just as they're warming up you get four new Filipino works at the latest Cannes Film Festival and you realize that the game has just started and the best is yet to come. It's not all about Brillante Mendoza (who has just finished his latest movie, Sapi), Adolfo Alix Jr., Auraeus Solito or the Rotterdam darlings Khavn De La Cruz, Raya Martin and John Torres - all accomplished auteurs who already have their festival milieu and aficionados. The truth is that Filipino cinema continues to be one of the most interesting in the world, a very prolific environment where every day it seems there are...

The infamous forced march of Filipino and American soldiers by the victorious Japanese after the Battle of Bataan in 1942 has all the impact of a little theater production in Death March. Attractively shot in black-and-white on artificial sets with actors generally grouped in tight formations that combine with slow-motion and a dense soundtrack in aspiring to a kind of hallucinatory claustrophobia, director Adolfo Alix Jr.’s film can be theoretically admired for trying something different, but the repetitiveness and tedium soon take over. Walkouts were numerous at the first Cannes showing and only festivals with a

This morning the official 2013 Cannes Film Festival line-up was announced from Paris, France. The committee saw 1,858 films submitted this year and while additional titles will continue to be announced, this morning we got the full Competition and Un Certain Regard lineup and it looks amazing so far. Among the films announced In Competition so far, many were expected including Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives, Steven Soderbergh's Behind the Candelabra, Roman Polanski's Venus in Fur, Asghar Farhadi's The Past and Joel and Ethan Coen's Inside Llewyn Davis. Additionally James Gray's once titled Lowlife starring Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner will play, but under the name The Immigrant and Takashi Miike's cop thriller Wara No Tate (Straw Shield) has also made the competition list. However, the biggest "surprise" is the inclusion of Alexander Payne's black-and-white film Nebraska, which is sure to be a big attention getter,...

So the line-up for this year's Cannes Film Festival was just released today and I damn near fainted from the awesome. This year's competition has got to be the biggest, baddest one in many years, with so many famous auteurs throwing down with their latest films. Who will get the coveted Palme d'Or?
A sampling of just the biggest names who will be in competition: Pedro Almodovar (Broken Embraces), Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds), Park Chan-wook (Thirst), Jane Campion (Bright Star), Michael Haneke (The White Ribbon), Gaspar Noe (Enter the Void), Ken Loach (Looking for Eric), Johnnie To (Vengeance), Lars von Trier (Antichrist), Ang Lee (Taking Woodstock).
Not only that, but out of competition, we have Pixar's Up as the opening film, Bong Joon-ho's Mother, Hikorazu Kore-eda's Air Doll, Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell, and a new documentary by Michel Gondry...

For the most part, the majority of the films Variety speculated would be included at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival made the final list. The only ones that didn't were Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant and Francis Ford Coppola's Tetro out of the group I listed from their early report. However, to make up for it they have added Alejandro Amenabar's Agora starring Rachel Weisz, which is big news if you ask me. Listed below is the early list thanks to Variety. Wow, the speculation this year was pretty heavy on some great genre fare we've been tracking and while we're missing some stunners like Mr. Nobody and a couple others I've been clocking but won't mention, we do get the following:
Antichrist from Lars Von Trier
Enter the Void from Gapar Noe (we've been waiting on a trailer for a long time)
Vengeance from Johnnie To
Thirst from Chan-Wook Park
Inglorious Basterds from Qt
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus from Terry Gilliam
As well as so many others. One of these years Qe will be headed to Cannes for reviews, but not this year folks, (unless we can find a French correspondent or someone donates a few large, hah!)

Okay, can I just tell you now, that I wish I can go :sad
But work schedule prevents me from going to Cannes (May is ratings period for TV and thou shall not leave your post!). So, I'll just regale myself with fantasizing I was there, or, by counting the days before I can see the films in/out competition!
And this year? It's great! Quentin Tarantino ("Inglourious Basterds") will face off with Ang Lee ("Taking Woodstock") while fighting Pedro Almodovar ("Broken Embraces") and kicking Jane Campion ("Bright Star") to the curb.
It's going to be fierce!
But before all the competition hoopla, Disney/Pixar will entertain everyone by opening the event with "Up" (the first ever animated film to kick off the festival!).
Oh, and out of competition? The last film made by Heath Ledger, "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" by Terry Gilliam.
Here's the complete line up, oh,...
But work schedule prevents me from going to Cannes (May is ratings period for TV and thou shall not leave your post!). So, I'll just regale myself with fantasizing I was there, or, by counting the days before I can see the films in/out competition!
