"This is the passport to Dalí coming here." Music Box Films has revealed an official US trailer for a Spanish comedy called Waiting for Dalí, arriving to watch in US theaters this July. It first premiered and opened in Spain last summer. Yet another Dali-related comedy film to watch, with plenty others recently including Daaaaaali! and Dalíland (with Sir Ben Kingsley). This one involves mixing Dali with food, following a chef who starts working in a kitchen at a place called El Surreal, a whimsical restaurant run by Jules, a man with a consuming obsession for local resident Salvador Dalí. Fernando, a talented chef, arrives to the village of Cadaqués (Google Maps) during the 70s, residence of the internationally renowned Dalí. The paths of the chef and the artist will cross and cause the birth of a new culinary genius. Waiting for Dalí "is a fanciful tale of love, art,...

Following a fully online 2021 event, a hybrid 2022 and last year’s 2023 comeback edition that saw most European distributors still struggling to stay afloat in a barely post-pandemic world, this year’s Rendez-Vous with French Cinema in Paris was a “typical” market. And in 2024, typical is great.

Public broadcaster Kcet — part of a PBS duopoly with Koce “PBS SoCal” — is back on top at the Los Angeles Area Emmys. Thanks to locally produced series like “Artbound” and “Broken Bread,” Kcet dominated the L.A. area Emmy nominations, announced Tuesday, with 24.
That’s a return to the top spot among nominees, and up from 15 last year. Cable news outlet Spectrum News 1, which dominated last year’s Emmy nominations, was down to 14 this year (vs. 23 in 2022) — still good enough for third place.
Meanwhile, Telemundo outlet Kvea (part of a duopoly with NBC-owned Knbc) saw a huge surge as well, with 20 nominations — up from just 8 last year. That meant Kvea was not only tops with Spanish outlets, but it was also tops with all commercial broadcasters. That includes its sibling NBC4, just posted just two nominations.

Crossing borders under difficult circumstances has always been part of the deal for spies. But getting your cast and crew to do the same, during times of Covid, also became part of the suspense in completing the first two episodes of the Amazon Prime show “Totems,” which premiered at Canneseries TV festival this week.
Featuring an international cast, including Niels Schneider, Vera Kolesnikova, José Garcia, Lambert Wilson and Ana Girardot, the spy drama was mainly shot in Prague. The city provides a convincing substitute for East Berlin, where some of the story takes place at an action-packed scientific conference.
The story follows French scientist Francis Mareuil (Schneider) whose angular features play beautifully between the shadows, as he starts operating as a spy, just like his estranged nurse wife in Paris (Girardot).

While France has a deeply entrenched cinema tradition, drama series have been gaining tremendous ground within the country’s cultural landscape within the past few years, with some of the country’s biggest producers, stars and filmmakers venturing into ambitious television projects. The 3-month-old merger of UniFrance and TV France Intl., the country’s film and audiovisual promotion organizations, into a single entity is probably the best illustration of this blended world.
The growing presence of global streaming services, especially Netflix, in the TV space has played a key role in bolstering a talent drain, catapulting French stars, such as Omar Sy with the Gaumont-produced show “Lupin,” to international recognition. Although Sy broke through a decade ago with the smash hit French comedy “Intouchables,” “Lupin” allowed him to reach many more viewers around the world. To say that ‘Nous finirons ensemble’ suffers from many of the same problems as its predecessor should come as no surprise. “Les petits mouchoirs” (released as “Little White Lies” in English-speaking territories) was the second most popular film in France in 2010, behind “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” so one cannot fault writer-director Guillaume Canet for wanting to give Gallic audiences more of what they loved the first time around. However, we can fault Canet for the result, a jabbering and ingratiating followup filled with narrative dead ends, unexplored themes and late-inning plot contrivances.
None of these issues seem to bother local audiences, who have made “Nous finirons ensemble” (which translates to “We will end up together”) a hit, albeit a smaller one than its predecessor. Fortunately, considering the first film’s mediocre performance in North America — where it earned just $206,088 of its more than $48 million haul — foreknowledge of “Les petits mouchoirs” is not mandatory,...

Madame Hyde, Serge Bozon's fifth directorial feature and second collaboration with Isabelle Huppert, is a strange film—ingenious, but modestly scaled; often bewildering, yet somehow always intuitively right; a mix of familiar narratives that nonetheless manages to feel startlingly original. Conceived by regular screenwriter Axelle Ropert as a gender-swapped, comedic riff on Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 science-fiction tale The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde fused with the suburban classroom drama, it's a striking amalgam whose oddity may account for its Locarno Festival premiere, as opposed to a higher-profile film festival bow in Berlin, Cannes or Venice. Then again, that’s entirely unsurprising for a film that vibrates at such a rarefied frequency, whose movements are frisky and flighty, and the pleasures of which could easily be mistaken for ineptitude. The film opens with Huppert’s mousy, diminutive Marie Géquil (whose name marks the first of Madame...

Mrs. Hyde (Madame Hyde), screenplay by Serge Bozon and Axelle Ropert, cinematography by the director's sister Céline Bozon, stars Isabelle Huppert as Mrs .Géquil, the science teacher you don't remember. The students make endless fun of her. Malik (Adda Senani), who is being teased for a bad leg he had from birth, is particularly hostile.
José Garcia is her stay-at-home husband who cooks for her and is less perceptive than he seems. Romain Duris, the principal of the school where she teaches, wears pants and ties that match the colours of the school's walls and doors.

Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr Jekyll turning into Mr Hyde has been portrayed by John Barrymore, Fredric March and Spencer Tracy - but never in a transformation quite like this.
Mrs Hyde (Madame Hyde), screenplay by Serge Bozon and Axelle Ropert, cinematography by the director's sister Céline Bozon, stars Isabelle Huppert as Mrs Géquil, the science teacher (or music or English) you don't remember. Fragile, timid, frightened, she has a preference for pale yellow cardigans and pink skirts and sensible shoes, and speaks with a high, shaky voice when she enters the classroom.

"You really should think about anger management. You're reckless, and irresponsible, you can't just run and start firing." Studiocanal UK has debuted an official trailer for the French action movie Bastille Day, starring the always-awesome Idris Elba as a former CIA agent who goes to Paris, France to help with an anti-terrorism mission. However, as the quote above mentions, he seems to be more reckless than helpful. The cast includes Kelly Reilly and Charlotte Le Bon. This looks like it has some solid action, but more than anything it's great to watch Idris Elba kickin' some ass. I'm interested in checking this out. Take a look. Here's the first trailer for James Watkins & Jill Gagé's Bastille Day, direct from YouTube: A young artist and former CIA agent embark on an anti-terrorist mission in France. Featuring Richard Madden, Charlotte Le Bon, Alexander Cooper, Anatol Yusef, José Garcia. Bastille Day is...

While America has Independence Day, the French celebrate Bastille Day 10 days later and this year they’ll have a film of the same title. Rather than depicting the Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789 — the basis of the French holiday — it’s a straight-up, modern-day action feature starring Idris Elba.
Coming from The Woman in Black director James Watkins, the film follows the Beasts of No Nation star as a CIA agent who helps a pickpocket (Richard Madden) uncover a larger conspiracy. Set for a release in the April in the U.K., Focus Features has yet to set a U.S. date but one can hopefully expect it by the end of the year. Also starring Charlotte Le Bon, Eriq Ebouaney and José Garcia, check out the trailer below.

The comic plot of Fonzy is outrageous, but to writer-director Isabelle Doval, it's just an armature that supports its gently funny characters and its themes of emotional and filial connections.
Diego, played by the pleasantly Robert Downey Jr.-like José Garcia, is an affable fuckup with big debts to loan sharks and a family reputation of extreme unreliability. But he excels at producing unbelievably potent sperm, gallons of which he sold, during his twenties, to a fertility clinic, to supplement his intermittent income.
Eighteen years later, after the sperm bank is forced to issue a consanguinity warning for inadvertently administering too much of his sperm to a single community, Diego discovers that he is the biological father of 533 children. 150 of the...

Inside Llewyn Davis (15)
(Joel & Ethan Coen, 2013, Us) Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Adam Driver, Garret Hedlund, John Goodman. 105 mins
Bob Dylan hadn't written Like A Rolling Stone when this is set (New York, 1961), but Isaac's eponymous hero could almost be the inspiration. He's the archetypal drifter: a complete unknown with no direction home and little prospect of realising his folk-star dream, despite, or perhaps because of, his artistic integrity. The Coens let us know exactly how it feels. This is their most mature drama to date: subdued, sincere, bleakly funny, and as finely crafted as we've come to expect.
August: Osage County (15)
(John Wells, 2013, Us) Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts. 121 mins
Heavy acting artillery is positioned for a full-on awards assault, with Streep's malign matriarch marshalling her fractured family for some mourning and bloodletting.

Another sappy movie about a lovable man-child who finds out he's fathered 533 kids via sperm donations? Oh, but this time it's French
Stop me if you've heard this one before: a feckless yet lovable man-child (José Garcia) finds out he's fathered 533 kids via sperm donations he made 20 years ago. Although he's fighting in court to maintain his anonymity, he can't resist surreptitiously meeting some of the children he sired, thereby discovering hitherto unsuspected wells of paternal feeling. Yes, it's the same sappy-sweet plot as director Ken Scott's 2011 French-Canadian movie Starbuck, which was recently remade (by Scott himself) into Vince Vaughn vehicle Delivery Man, using a story probably inspired by the 2010 documentary Donor Unknown (still the most interesting take on the raw material). The only major difference with Fonzy, which cleaves slavishly to Scott's template, is that it's set in France. Watch all of them back to back and it's...

The first lines of dialogue in Now You See Me are:
“The closer you look, the less you see. The more you think you see, the easier it will be to fool you.”
With poorer syntax, this could easily sound like a fortune cookie written by Yoda, but it’s not.
These lines are offered seductively by J.Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) as answers to the young lady for whom he’s performing a card trick. He’s speaking in measured tones, mesmerizing a young woman à la David Copperfield, sans the creepiness but on the same massive scale.
When you see the result, you will understand why this young lady, whom he’s marked for that evening’s lovefest, did not hesitate to go home with a street performer nor question for a moment if he even had a home.

Four talented magicians mesmerize an international audience with a series of bold and original heists, all the while pursuing a hidden agenda that has the FBI and Interpol scrambling to anticipate their next move in Now You See Me, a visually spectacular blend of astonishing illusions and exhilarating action from director Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans).
The Four Horsemen, a magic super‐group led by the charismatic J.Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), perform a pair of hightech, high‐profile magic shows, first amazing audiences by remotely robbing a Paris bank while in Las Vegas, and then exposing a white‐collar criminal and funneling his millions into the audience members’ bank accounts, baffling the authorities with their intricately planned capers.
FBI Special Agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) is determined to make the magicians pay for their crimes—and to stop them before they pull off what promises to be an even more audacious heist.

Summit Entertainment has released some new images for the upcoming magic-thriller Now You See Me which comes out May 31st, 2013.
Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Mélanie Laurent, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson, José Garcia, Common, Dave Franco, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman.
Pretty good cast, not as good as X-Men: Days of Future Past, but still impressive.
Louis Leterrier is directing a screenplay from Ed Solomon and Boaz Yakin & Edward Ricourt. Produced by Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci and Bobby Cohen.
I think its funny that Michael Caine is in this movie. All I can think about is Caine’s role in The Prestige (2006) and how much it feels like Morgan Freeman is playing Caine’s role from that film (that of the epic narrator).
I’ll watch Mark Ruffalo in anything.
What do you guys think? Better than Burt Wonderstone?

When he's not busy getting into trouble on stag trips in the Hangover films, Ed Helms can usually be found as Andy Bernard on the American version of The Office. But he's just picked up another film role, agreeing to star in the remake of 2010 French comedy Le Mac.
Pascal Bourdiaux's film saw José Garcia as a mild-mannered banker who is forced to impersonate a notorious gangster and pimp. It sounds like the sort of fish-out-of-water role Helms can pull off with ease.
The script is being written by Johnny Rosenthal, one of several writers who have pitched one of two competing takes on Bad Santa 2 to Dimension Films and Miramax. He brought up the idea of remaking Le Mac to film backers Media Rights Capital, which has struck up a partnership with Ben Stiller's Red Hour Films to thrust the idea into development.

Le Couperet tells the story of a chemist (played by José Garcia in the original version) who gets fired after a merging operation of his company. After several years of unemployment, the loss of his middle-class standards for his family and his self-esteem, he decides to improve his chances on the job market by killing of his competitors.
