A group of screenwriters including Eli Roth, Graham Yost and Amy Chozick have issued an open letter decrying the Writers Guild of America’s silence on last week’s Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel.
In the letter, posted to the blog site Medium, the screenwriters mention the statements already issued by other Hollywood guilds, including SAG-AFTRA and the directors’ guild.
“When it comes to taking a stand, the Writers Guild of America has always led by example,” the statement said. “When employers sought to exploit our work, the Guild bravely spoke up. When the BLM movement took flight, the Guild rightfully spoke up. When the #MeToo reckoning came and Hollywood needed to change, again the Guild spoke up. But when terrorists invaded Israel to murder, rape, and kidnap Jews… the Guild stayed silent. It remains the only major Hollywood union to do so.”

Exclusive: Felicity Huffman is returning to acting — and to ABC — with a single-camera comedy that has landed a big pilot production commitment at the network. The Peanut Butter Falcon‘s Zack Gottsagen co-stars in the project from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment.
Written by Becky Hartman Edwards, the untitled comedy is inspired by Susan Savage, the real-life owner of the Triple-a baseball team the Sacramento River Cats. It marks the first project Huffman has taken on since the 2019 college admission scandal.
The Emmy-winning actress has been heavily courted for TV series and pilots since she completed her short prison sentence after pleading guilty to fraud more than a year ago. Kaplan approached Huffman with the idea about a series inspired by Savage, which she responded to. He brought on Hartman Edwards as a writer, and Gottsagen, who has a talent deal with Kapital, came on board to co-star opposite Huffman.

E! is trying its hand at scripted series, and one of the projects it has on the docket is the latest from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. The "Gossip Girl" and "The O.C." creators teamed up once again on the series "Laurel Canyon," another Southern California-based television show that E! is looking to air.
The project is described as being about "a young woman who returns to her Hollywood family after her rock-star dad dies," and is one of eight scripted shows E! has in development. Among the others is a "darkly psychological retelling" of "The Prince and the Pauper" called "The Stand-In," a modern retelling of "Great Expectations" about a "morally corrupt family in the diamond business in New York City" called "Expectations" and series produced by Gale Anne Hurd and Kevin Spacey.

Exclusive: E! has put in development another scripted project as the network is preparing to greenlight its first scripted pilots. Shoreline, which has an Upstairs, Downstairs feel to it, is being written by Carolyn Ingber (The Mentalist) and executive produced by Switched At Birth exec producer Becky Hartman Edwards. It centers on the golden child of a small coastal town in South Carolina who, after a scandal in New York, returns home to see that a major Hollywood primetime soap, The Shore Line Yacht Club, is the biggest employer in town. An enormous class divide separates the cast and producers from the townspeople, yet their lives are continuously and irrevocably intertwined — for better or worse. Fox TV Studios is producing. In addition to Shoreline, Edwards has another small-town soap in contention at E! sibling NBC, which she is writing. Sony TV and Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge Entertainment produce. Expanding E!

USA is gearing up for its biggest summer yet, with five original series set to premiere in June and July. On Monday April 5, the network announced its development slate which includes a project executive produced by Steve Carell.
The show, which is as of yet untitled, teams up Carell and John Michael Higgins behind-the-scenes for a show "about a middle-class insurance investigator who finds high-stakes drama on dull jobs," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
USA is also working on "Robyn," an updated version of "Robin Hood" with a female in the lead role. Becky Hartman Edwards, producer of "Parenthood" and "Life on Mars," is at the helm.
In new series "A Legal Mind," a college drop-out with an affinity for marijuana teams up with a heavy-hitter lawyer. "Stick" is about a former hockey player who now devotes his time to charitable endeavors.
The network has also ordered two FBI projects.
