“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

“The Crown” Season 6 has arrived, marking a sendoff for one of the most prestigious – and expensive – shows in Netflix history. The drama series has chronicled the reign of Queen Elizabeth II since her ascent in 1947, with the show rebooting its cast every two seasons to reflect the aging characters. “The Crown” Season 6 is dropping on Netflix in two halves and covers the tragic final weeks of Princess Diana’s life as it traverses the late 1990s into the early 2000s.

The Crown, which has won 21 Emmy Awards during its run on Netflix and is one of the streamer’s most enduringly popular original series, will soon step down from the throne. The show’s sixth season will be its last telling the story of Queen Elizabeth II and Britain’s royal family in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
The critically acclaimed series has chronicled some six decades of Elizabeth II’s reign, recasting its central characters every two seasons as the show moves through recent history as characters age. Claire Foy played the young Elizabeth for The Crown’s first two seasons and was followed by Olivia Colman in seasons three and four; both won Emmys for their work. Imelda Staunton took over the role in season five and will finish out the show as it moves into the early 2000s.

Exclusive: The director of Netflix drama The Crown‘s episodes re-creating Princess Diana’s death in Paris 26 years ago has revealed the extraordinary efforts that went into ensuring it was handled with tact.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline, Christian Schwochow, who directed the three crucial Season 6 episodes that feature what are likely to be some of the most talked about moments on television this year, said that though shots were filmed of Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, in the Paris morgue, there was never any intention of them being included in the final edit.
The filmmaker directed the second episode from the final season of Peter Morgan’s British royal drama, titled “Two Photographs”; episode 3 (“Dis-Moi-Oui”), which features the crash; and episode 4, titled “Aftermath.”
Schwochow also confirmed reports from last October that the crash involving the Mercedes-Benz, driven by Henri Paul and carrying Diana, Dodi Fayed and security consultant Trevor Rees-Jones,...

Why do we find murder mysteries so uniquely relaxing? This is one of the age-old questions about human nature, up there with ‘what is consciousness?’ and ‘why do we keep eating mouldy cheese and fish eggs like it’s a good thing?’ Because, despite the grief and blood and mountains of paperwork that a gruesome murder causes, we simply can’t get enough of curling up on the sofa with a mug of tea and a cosy crime drama to keep us blissfully entertained all the way through to bedtime.
This isn’t a new thing, either: while modern series like Death in Paradise and Shakespeare and Hathaway are the current champions of cosy crime TV, back in the eighties and nineties classics like Murder She Wrote and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates taught us how it’s done. So whether you’re after the latest in the cosy crime genre or some more nostalgic viewing,...

“The Crown” remains Netflix royalty. The fifth season of Peter Morgan’s Queen Elizabeth II biopic series has debuted at the top of the streamer’s Top 10 English language chart, for the November 7 through 13 viewing window.
According to figures provided by Netflix, the fifth season of the series has been watched for 107.39 million hours since its premiere on November 9. Previously, it was reported that the show was watched by over 1.1 million viewers in the United Kingdom on its launch day. Even more impressively, that figure from Overnights.tv only counts people who watched the show via TV, meaning those who watched via a laptop, tablet or cell phone weren’t included in the figure.

Among the many controversies that gripped the British Royal Family during the 1990s was one that would only come to light almost two decades later, when Prince Andrew’s friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his partner Ghislaine Maxwell (who was convicted of sex trafficking last December) was eventually exposed in the press.
The scandal, which metastasized after Prince Andrew was sued in a civil court for sexual assault by Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s victims, destroyed his public standing. His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, stripped him of his many patronages and military titles before she died and, despite denying any wrongdoing and ultimately settling with Giuffre, Andrew is still effectively banished from public life.
But for James Murray, who plays Prince Andrew in Season 5 of “The Crown,” there was no apprehension about stepping into the disgraced royal’s buffed shoes. “My thoughts were, ‘Great, fantastic,’” Murray tells Variety.

Claudia Harrison is among several stars of The Crown who have joined Jonathan Pryce in dismissing calls for the Netflix drama to carry a disclaimer about historical accuracy.
In October, Prince Philip star Pryce said he was “hugely disappointed” by the reaction to the forthcoming fifth series, after Judi Dench asked Netflix to add a disclaimer to the start of each episode stating that The Crown is a “fictionalised drama”.
Netflix didn’t add a disclaimer to each episode, but it did add one to the season five trailer.

She urged people to “turn the noise [of the debate] down and watch the show”.

Elizabeth Debicki had a royal advantage when being cast as Princess Diana in “The Crown.”
The Australian actress revealed to British Vogue that she doesn’t follow any news related to the Royal family, adding that the endless Daily Mail news coverage “makes me nauseous.”
“I don’t have any big opinions about the Royal Family. That’s an advantage here, right?” Debicki, who joins the Emmy-winning Netflix series in Season 5, said.

Just two months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Netflix is taking viewers back to one of the most turbulent periods of her reign. The streamer has released the official trailer for Season 5 of “The Crown,” which will depict events in the British monarch’s reign during the ’90s.
For many fans, the most anticipated element of the season — and one that the trailer puts great emphasis on — is the portrayal of Prince Charles (played this season by Dominic West) and Princess Diana’s (Elizabeth Debicki) separation and divorce. The dissolution of their marriage, which took place from 1993 to 1996, was breathlessly covered by the media and caused a significant turn in public opinion regarding the British royal family.
Set to the Verve’s 1997 Britpop hit “Bitter Sweet Symphony,” the trailer recreates many widely covered moments from the media storm at the time, including Diana’s famous black “Revenge Dress...

The Netflix series "The Crown" hit the top 10 for the streaming service shortly after the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022. There have been four seasons of the series chronicling the life of the royal house of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, with a fifth and sixth on the way. Production on season 6 paused briefly out of respect for the Queen's passing.

The fifth season of The Crown will premiere November 9 on Netflix, the streamer said Saturday. The drama always was scheduled to launch on the that month, but following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, there had been acute sensitivity at Netflix about how to proceed.
Fall TV Premiere Dates For New & Returning Series On Broadcast, Cable & Streaming
Protocols were instigated back in 2016, before The Crown debuted, about how to manage transmission in the event of the much-loved monarch’s passing. Peter Morgan, the Emmy-winning drama’s creator, and Stephen Daldry, an executive producer, always adamant, as were others, that production be paused for a short period as a mark of respect.
Production on filming Season 6 was indeed halted on the day of the queen’s death. Shooting was also suspended Monday, the day of the state funeral.

Here, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton put their own twist on Shakespearean comedy with an episode set entirely in a hotel corridor and written entirely in iambic pentameter, the clever sods. Regular brilliance clearly wasn’t presenting these two enough of a challenge.
It’s a challenge they pull off with relish. The writing’s smart and self-aware (“Like this iambic foot, I’m stressed, you’re not”) while the gags are a bawdy delight. Shakespeare never rhymed ‘bum’ with ‘Magnus Magnusson’, but you know he would have done,...

The pairing of acting legends Sir Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi is a match made in heaven, but putting them together in a bawdy, bitchy British sitcom playing lovers who have been together for nearly 50 years? Yes, please!
Vicious aired last year in the UK and had its share of fans and critics. American viewers are finally getting a chance to decide for themselves if this show is the gay sitcom that we’ve been waiting for. (One good sign is that Vicious already has a second season order and will start shooting this fall. Hopefully the Us airings will garner solid ratings to continue airing beyond the first season).

Theatrical farce adapted from the classic Ealing comedy set to tour into 2013 after record ticket sales in the West End
Little old landladies are to get their revenge all over the country after Graham Linehan's stage adaptation of The Ladykillers, currently playing at the West End's Gielgud theatre, announced that it will embark on a tour of the UK and Ireland.
After receiving five Olivier award nominations last week, The Ladykillers will start its tour in Plymouth on 14 September. The production will continue to tour into 2013, with further dates to be announced.
As well as garnering positive reviews, Linehan's adaptation, which turns the classic Ealing comedy into a theatrical farce, has already proved a big earner for its producers Fiery Angel. Following a pre-West End run in Liverpool, the show recouped its entire £750,000 outlay only six weeks after opening in London. During the Christmas period, it broke the Gielgud's box office record,...

Graham Linehan's stage adaptation of The Ladykillers succeeds where the Coen brothers failed: it's actually funny
Graham Linehan's new stage adaptation of the classic 1955 Ealing movie The Ladykillers, directed by Sean Foley, is up and running in London's West End. My colleague Michael Billington has delivered his verdict and I went to see it the other day. The questions this production throws up – apart from "Wasn't that brilliant?" and "When for goodness' sake can I see it again?" – are "How has Mr Linehan bucked the trend of film-to-play adaptations being so cynical and awful?" and "How has he succeeded where the Coen brothers failed?"
Joel and Ethan Coen produced their own remake of The Ladykillers in 2004. The original had a wacky criminal gang, led by Alec Guinness's loopy professor, renting a room in a tumbledown old house in London's King's Cross from a sweet old lady, whom...

How do you adapt classic film The Ladykillers for the stage? First, blow the whole thing up
The story of The Ladykillers came to screenwriter William Rose in a dream. Four criminals planning a robbery hole up in an old lady's house, deciding to kill her when she discovers their secret. Unable to do the deed, however, some of them end up killing each other, and all of them end up dead. Rose woke his wife, Tania, gabbled the story to her – and immediately fell asleep again. She, thankfully for him and all of us, flew from their bed and typed the whole thing out before it had a chance to go cold. The next morning, she told the story to her husband, and he listened amazed, as if hearing it for the first time.
Fittingly, the classic 1955 film has a dreamlike, flowing quality, but with a robust logic that...

Now more than 50 years old, Ealing comedy The Ladykillers is one of Britain's best-loved films. So how will Graham Linehan, writer of The It Crowd and Father Ted, rework it for the theatre?
In the vaulting back room of a church off Islington's Upper Street in north London, five bad bogus men are plotting to bump off a little old lady. It is a hugely ambitious undertaking. Not only is The Ladykillers one of Britain's best-loved films, but the cast of the 1955 production – Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, Cecil Parker, Herbert Lom and Danny Green – did include one or two actors that modern film programmes like to wrongly refer to as "legends", even if (pedantry aside) you know what they mean.
But this won't be a film; it's a stage version. And it's far from a knock-off of the film. The story's pretty much the same, of course – criminals posing as...

Alec Guinness classic crime caper re-cast as stage play in Liverpool by Father Ted and It Crowd writer Graham Linehan
It might be about criminals exploiting a sweet old lady so they can rob a bank, but The Ladykillers is regularly named as one of the nation's favourite comedy films. Now the Ealing classic is to be brought to the stage in a new version written by Father Ted and The It Crowd writer Graham Linehan.
Producers will announce that the memorably dark and stylish 1955 film is being adapted for the stage, with Peter Capaldi in the role of the charming but sinister gang leader Professor Marcus, played first by Alec Guinness.
The stage play will be very much Linehan's version. "I wanted the film to haunt the play rather than it be a transcription," he said.
There will also be more laughs. Linehan had been asked by producers if...
