Fans of “Black Mirror” know that the popular sci-fi anthology series explores the unintended consequences of modern technology, such as a grain implanted in your ear that allows people to relive their past memories, or software that allows people to converse with the deceased. But what happens when the general frustrations of modern technology play a part in these premises? Funny or Die has the answer.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

Just in time for the Lupitia Nyong'o and Gwendoline Christie Star Wars news, musicians Neko Case and Kelly Hogan have released their new song, "These Aren't The Droids." The future is here and it is awesome! If you're a straight white dude. For the rest of us? This utopia isn't quite what was advertised. Taking aim at geek culture from the inside with light-hearted comedy (and kittens!) Case and Hogan purpose a new vision for the world of tomorrow. A vision that includes lyrics like: 1. "Space drinks, space clothes, space silver jumpsuits, space world harmony, space silver moon boots…so much silver!" 2. "But we didn't realize, the future…was designed by teenage guys!" 3. "Three boobed aliens on stripper poles. They want shiny sex bots with only holes." 4. "It is way past time for a revolution to your hairless post-apocalyptic constitution. Which face it, is basically Maxim mixed with Mad and Cracked.

You’ve been through a lot together, and while everyone says they would welcome a cure, very few seem to appreciate what that “break-up” might really mean.

The staff over at "Conan" took a vacation this week, but while we were missing watching our favorite redhead on TV, we weren't missing the show's irreverent brand of humor thanks to a consistent flow of tweets from the writers.
Team Coco's hilarious Twitter presence is nothing new, but since it's Friday, we figured you might want to #FollowFriday writers such as Deon Cole, Laurie Kilmartin and Rob Kutner for their witty observations in 140 characters or less.
Here are some of our favorite tweets from Team Coco as of late. Vote for your favorites and follow them for more!

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.
AMC's "Mad Men" and NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office" are in the running for best drama/comedy series, and each received two nominations for episodic writing. "Family" made the cut for best comedy series, best new series and best episodic writing for a comedy series.
ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.
While the WGA Awards are still in its nomination phase, Fox's "The Simpsons" can already uncork the champagne. The veteran series is assured to win the animation category after landing all five nomination slots.

So another year has passed and its time for another round of awards for the people who make the television shows we like to watch.
Television is interesting these days. Never before have we seen such great, creative output. Never before have we been subjected to such drivel. It all gets paraded before us tonight, as we watch the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards (handed out, it should be noted, by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) on CBS, CTV in Canada.

Interesting that the Emmys chose to introduce the 2009 edition of the Primetime awards by harkening back to the early days of television. Especially as the business of television has never been closer to a complete collapse. Oh, announcer who is trying so hard to sound like a TV host from the '50s. You don't sound at all like you're a three pack-a-day smoker.

An online network formed by professional TV and film scribes during the writer's strike unveiled a slate Wednesday featuring contributions from the minds behind the likes of "The Office" and "Die Hard."
Strike.tv plans to launch this summer with more than 40 shortform programs, including comedies, dramas and a game show. Some programs will be serialized while others will be standalone; the site has yet to secure advertising.
Participating writers include Lester Lewis ("The Office"), Rob Kutner ("The Daily Show With Jon Stewart"), Stephen E. de Souza ("Die Hard"), Karen Harris ("General Hospital") and Ron Corcillo ("Malcolm in the Middle").
The impetus for the online network came from writers who wanted to generate revenue for out-of-work colleagues. To that end, Strike.TV pledges to donate the first three months of ad revenue to the Entertainment Assistance Program of the Actors Fund.
However, Strike.tv is also intended to become a profitable venture in its own right, allowing participating writers to own their intellectual property. Its creators also anticipate it could be an alternative to the studio system as well as a breeding ground for programming that studios could co-opt.
Strike.tv has also attracted talent including Bob Newhart, Timothy Dalton and "Saturday Night Live's" Kristen Wiig.

Its creators also anticipate it could be an alternative to the studio system as well as a breeding ground for programming that studios could co-opt.
Strike.tv has also attracted talent including Bob Newhart, Timothy Dalton and "Saturday Night Live's" Kristen Wiig.

NEW YORK -- When Rob Kutner and Mike Shapiro set out to create the pilot "Family Values", they had a vision for a family sitcom that would resonate in today's polarized political climate.
The pilot stars "The Daily Show" correspondent Rob Riggle as an ultra-conservative pundit whose life is turned upside down when his wife leaves him and he is forced to raise his children on his own with the help of a left-leaning single mother who lives next door. Kutner ("Daily", "Dennis Miller Live") wrote the pilot, but he wasn't sure the series would emerge with his original vision intact if it went the traditional route for TV production.
Enter the New York Television Festival, the third annual celebration of the burgeoning independent TV scene, where "Values" will be screened in front of networks, producers and agents who could give it a shot. "Values" is one of 28 independently produced pilots that will compete for prizes and the chance to be picked up by networks and studios during the four-day festival, which starts Wednesday and runs through Sept. 9 at New World Stages in New York.
"The festival is just a few years old but it's a very unique opportunity," said Shapiro, who directed "Values". "We're both familiar with the independent-filmmaking model of production and we applied that to the idea of 'Family Values.' "
Giving a boost to a new generation of TV producers, much the way the Sundance Film Festival has given a leg up to those on the movie side, is just what Terence Gray had in mind when he created the festival in 2005. The event, which started modestly with backing from such agencies as WMA and CAA as well as such networks as NBC and Fox, has grown to the point where it's a destination of choice for the hundreds of people for whom the digital revolution has put within reach the creation of their own TV series.
Selling those shows, especially if you're just starting out and have no connections in Hollywood, isn't so easy -- something that Gray, a TV writer and producer himself, knew all too well.
"There was a real need in Hollywood and the movie landscape to bring back great storytelling, and they (Sundance) along with other festivals were able to achieve that," Gray said. "It's our hope to introduce a number of new ideas and storytellers and producers to the industry and infuse a great deal of creativity."
The festival follows a dual track, uniting up-and-coming writer-producers, agents and networks while at the same time celebrating the best of TV.
