Captain James Anderson seemed to have been a privateer at the start of the American Revolution. For those who are unsure about the exact meaning of the term, a privateer is someone who has been empowered by a government to predate upon foreign shipping, thus making them a useful supplement to a government’s naval power. This is known because there is a 1777 document recording his intentions to auction off a captured ship as well as its cargo of wood at his house in Baltimore, which was a common practice for privateers. When the American Revolution started up, Captain James

On this week’s second episode of The Curse of Oak Island Season 5, the team examine a sea chest once owned by the fascinating Captain James Anderson. The privateer (legal pirate) is believed to be the same “James Anderson” who once owned Lot 26 on Oak Island before selling it to former slave Samuel Ball — a familiar name to Oak Island fans — in 1788. His chest has been passed down through his family for generations, and amazingly still contains historic documents including one showing he was a member of the Freemasons. But this is not the first time...read more...

The Writers Guild Awards and the Academy writing nominees always don’t line up; many films are ineligible. This year, those included Oscar-writing nominees “Lion” and “The Lobster.”
This year, the WGA and the Academy differed dramatically. While the WGA deemed “Moonlight” and “Loving” as Original Screenplays, the Academy considered both as Adapted; only “Moonlight” landed a nomination.
At the WGA, as at the BAFTAs, Barry Jenkins’ script for “Moonlight” competed for the Original Screenplay Award against both Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea” and Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” Unlike the BAFTAs, Jenkins emerged the winner over Lonergan, a sign of strength for “Moonlight,” which is nominated for eight Oscars.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

At 52, Paula Pell is having a breakout year: She wrote Sisters, the upcoming comedy starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and just inked a deal to create a comedy for HBO about a former Olympic figure skater. Also, she's currently starring in the second season of the absurdly hilarious web series Hudson Valley Ballers, which she created with pals James Anderson and Michelle Lawler. The premise is that Pell and Anderson, both former SNL writers, decide to move to upstate New York to run a Bed and Brunch, where they meet such guest-stars as Paul Rudd, Lena Dunham, Natasha Lyonne, and many others. Before that, Pell could be seen onscreen as Ron Swanson's mom on Parks and Recreation and Pete's wife on 30 Rock, but her best-known work came as a writer for Saturday Night Live, where she started in 1995 and worked full-time until 2013 (she still comes...

The Hudson Valley Ballers are back, and as per usual, they’re hanging out with some big-time guest stars. Paula Pell and James Anderson’s web series has returned with new episodes on the Lexus-branded Lstudio platform, and among the visitors to the Hudson Valley’s trendiest bed-and-brunch establishment is a critic played by Tina Fey.
Fey appears in the final of four new episodes posted on Lstudio’s website and YouTube channel. Her character, Gingie, is essentially a fictitious version of Angie’s List founder Angie Hicks. Over the course of a seven-minute episode, Pell and Anderson (who play fictionalized versions of themselves) do everything they can to take Gingie out of her comfort zone and win her over at the same time.

On Wednesday, January 14, at 3 a.m., sleep-deprived Saturday Night Live writer James Anderson asked a fellow writer, Kent Sublette, “What about this idea?” Anderson, recently obsessed with the video game Dragon Age: Inquisition, proposed a sketch about a medieval castle beset by a huge fire-breathing dragon and the castle-dwellers who pause to sing about their imminent deaths instead of just running away. By Wednesday evening, following a pitch meeting and a huddle with executive producer Lorne Michaels and the show’s host, Kevin Hart, Anderson and Sublette’s script was approved. Titled “The Journey,” the skit would require an elaborate castle set, and a dragon, to be built in less than 48 hours. Around 9 p.m., SNL’s four-man production-design team sprang into action. Keith Raywood, a 30-year veteran of the show, was tasked with drafting blueprints for “The Journey.” Steve Paone drove the designs to the Brooklyn warehouse where they...

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

Above Average has become the go-to source for online video content from Saturday Night Live writers and performers, and its latest web series is another strange laugher with plenty of fun cameos. SNL writers Paula Pell and James Anderson star in Hudson Valley Ballers, which recently debuted the first two of six total episodes. The premise is simple: Two TV writers move to the Hudson Valley and open a bed-and-breakfast. While running said establishment, they have run-ins with all sorts of weird locals, but that's ok, because they're weird, too. Pell and Anderson each play a number of different characters, but the main protagonists are the highlight. If you're not amused by a scene where two people pour tea through their noses while talking about how great their friendship is, Hudson Valley Ballers is probably not for you. If you're intrigued, you'll probably be sold when you hear that Paul Rudd...

James Anderson's heroics in the Trent Bridge Test Match boosted Channel 5's early evening ratings last night.

The first three days of this Ashes series so far has produced some outstanding, at times unpredictable cricket and several momentum swingers. From Australia removing England for a measly 215 inside the first day, to a superb spell of bowling that saw Australia fall from 75-4 at the close of the first day’s play to 117-9 – trailing at that stage by 95 – to the incredible record breaking innings by debutant Ashton Agar who played brilliantly for his 98 batting at number 11 which helped Australia to 280 all out and a lead of 65.
England were wobbling too until Ian Bell and Stuart Broad (day three controversy aside when he should have been given out on 37 by umpire Aleem Dar) came to the crease hitting 109 and 65 respectively to guide England to 375 all out just before lunch on day four, setting Australia 311 to claim victory at Trent Bridge.

HollywoodNews.com: Brandon Voss has done another terrific interview for ‘The Advocate.’
This time his subject is ‘Saturday Night Live’ funnyman Jason Sudeikis who has the feature films ‘Hall Pass’ and ‘Horrible Bosses’ coming out soon. Will he join the ranks of such ‘SNL’ alums as Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy, John Belushi and Chevy Chase by becoming a big movie star?
Time will tell.
Here are some excerpts from his chat with Brandon:
Have guys ever hit on him?
I think so. No guy’s offered to whisk me away on a boat to some amazing island, unfortunately, but I have been high-fived a few times with a thoughtful, lingering glance.
On kissing Jon Hamm on the hog:
Well, technically I kissed him on the mouth, but — oh, you mean the motorcycle. ‘SNL’ already has those “Kissing Family” sketches, where the joke is that the family is way too into each other,...

"Saturday Night Live" veteran Jason Sudeikis has had the opportunity to share some intimate (and hilarious) scenes with some of Hollywood's most desired male celebrities. On the verge of becoming a movie star with "Hall Pass" and "Horrible Bosses" hitting the big screen in 2011, Sudeikis takes a stroll down memory lane with the Advocate on some of his hottest small-screen leading men.
On kissing Jon Hamm on the hog:
"Well, technically I kissed him on the mouth, but -- oh, you mean the motorcycle. 'SNL' already has those 'Kissing Family' sketches, where the joke is that the family is way too into each other, so Jon and I agreed in rehearsal, 'Let's not play this for laughs with slapping tongues. Let's kiss for real. We'll bump mustaches and kiss like we mean it.'... The sketch was written by James Anderson, one of our gay writers, and Michael O'Brien, one of our straight writers,...

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

Maroon 5's Adam Levine isn’t the only one posing nude to raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancer in Cosmopolitan UK’s new photo spread.
The singer got his gear off for the magazine feature this month, and has been joined by three members of the English cricket team – James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Alastair Cook. "I Love You Phillip Morris" came out of nowhere and secured a nod for the 2011 Writers Guild Awards. Based on the book by Steven McVicker, the film starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGRegor as prisoners in love received a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination.
"Phillip Morris" will be competing with awards-favorites "127 Hours" (screenplay by Danny Boyle & Simon Beaufoy), "The Social Network" (screenplay Aaron Sorkin), "The Town" (screenplay by Peter Craig and Ben Affleck & Aaron Stockard), and True Grit (screenplay by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen).

This week's Criminal Minds, "25 to Life," saw Morgan in the spotlight and in the crosshairs as his decision to help a parole candidate, Don Sanderson (guest star Kyle Secor) achieve his freedom led to unexpected, nearly disastrous repercussions.
Shemar Moore was terrific, especially the impact of his actions resonated internally.
Don maintained his innocence and was a model prisoner.
After a quarter century of denying the charge he was convicted on and causing no problems behind bars, and following close monitoring by Morgan, Don is set free after Morgan makes a recommendation to the parole board that he be.
Three days later, Don kills again. Or is it again?
Morgan has no idea what he just opened up, but this much is clear. Don is not your standard UnSub. His victim, Tom Wittman, was one of three people Don claims was present the night his wife and daughter where slain...

While we here in the U.S. continue to wait for professional athletes who have gay fanbases to embrace those fanbases, the lucky folks in the UK have yet another athlete who is down with the gays. This time it's English cricket star Jimmy Anderson who is getting his kit off for the gay magazine Attitude to show his, um, appreciation of the gays?

And here are a few more pics of Jimmy including one he did for a campaign to raise awareness for testicular cancer!

Pawtucket, Ri—Nerf, the popular toy manufacturer, announced Tuesday that it was introducing a new line of foam-based biological weapons capable of causing "massive outbreaks of fun."
According to company officials, the Nerf biological weapons represent the next logical step in foam warfare, offering kids all the enjoyment of deploying a disease-causing agent, while still being safe for indoor play.
"Kids of all ages will have a blast striking their favorite domestic target with these new highly contagious, neon-colored pathogens," Nerf CEO James Anderson told reporters. "Whether contaminating their city's water supply, or releasing an invisible cloud of airborne foam agents, our Nerf biological weapons will result in hours of enjoyment."
Developed over the past 15 years by top toy designers in exile from Russia, the microscopic Nerf neurotoxins are sold in two sizes: Bacterial Blast and Pandemic Pump. When released upon unsuspecting populations ages 6 and up, the cushy spores harmlessly...

Out Dancing With the Stars judge Bruno Tonioli
Today in Britain, they released pictures of a number of stars and athletes with their kits off. I don't understand how Give Up Clothes For Good plans to do about cancer with this, but I can certainly appreciate the gesture. And the fact that two of the male celebrities are out doesn't hurt either! Warning! Tasteful nudity ahead, folks. Out television presenter Christopher Biggins. I really used to think CNN was somewhere in the middle of the political spectrum, especially compared to MSNBC and Fox News. But they keep having discredited nutjobs on to discuss gay issues, like today when "ex-gay" conversionist Richard Cohen was presented as a psychotherapist (he's not,his license was revoked) to discuss repeal of California's 1950 law to "search for a cure for homosexuality.

Dumbo is the latest Disney property to get the Broadway treatment. I keep having visions of them wrapping the chandelier from Phantom of the Opera in a Papier-mâché elephant and swooping it around the audience.
Hulu is running an alternative to March Madness for people who couldn’t care less about footbasket or whatever it is they’re playing. It’s essentially a bracketed voting for your favorite shows, and gay favs like Glee, Modern Family, and Better Off Ted are up against much less deserving, and certainly less inclusive shows. Go vote now, I command you – Glee is losing to freakin’ Community.

The Writers Guild of America honored The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air at their ceremony on Saturday night, firmly establishing the films as front-runners in their respective Oscar categories.
Mark Boal certainly deserves the accolades after embedding himself with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team in Baghdad in 2004 and turning his journalist findings into a dramatic original screenplay. In his speech Boal thanked director Kathryn Bigelow for supporting “an unpopular story about an unpopular war that has now lasted twice as long as WWII with no end in sight.”
Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner picked up the prize for their adaptation of Walter Kirn’s novel, and Mark Monroe won for the moving documentary The Cove.
The WGA Awards are a somewhat reliable indicator of the Academy Awards. ”Original Screenplay” has matched 10 out of the last 15 years, and “Adapted” has lined up 11 of 15, including Milk and Slumdog Millionaire last year.
