The Parrot and the Swan
“The film is an excuse for a more important thing.”—The Gold BugWatching the films of Alejo Moguillansky can often feel like playing a children's game—the rules are constantly being invented and reinvented on the fly, cinematic conventions are bent into whatever shape produces the most fun. Watching films like The Parrot and the Swan (2013) where the main character is also the film’s boom operator and the film’s soundtrack is tethered to how he moves across the frame, it’s easy to think of the overly playful 1960s work of Jean-Luc Godard wherein the discovery of cinema’s many possibilities becomes the driving reason for the film itself.And, like Godard, this unbridled pursuit of cinematic freedom also comes hand in hand with a sense of political curiosity—namely, in Moguillansky’s case, a Marxist exploration of artistic labor in a capitalist system.

Acquisition marks one of the first deals for new sales company Totem Films.
Arp Séléction has snapped up French rights to Swedish filmmaker Levan Akin’s And Then We Danced, exploring the struggles of Georgia’s Lgbt+ community through the prism of dancers at a conservative national dance company, ahead of its premiere in Directors’ Fortnight next week (May 16).

The 2019 Driectors’ Fortnight lineup has been revealed, bringing with it new works from “The Witch” director Robert Eggers, Bertrand Bonello, Rebecca Zlotowski, and Takashi Miike. Fortnight is closely associated with the Cannes Film Festival although it is technically its own event that runs parallel to Cannes. Fortnight is celebrating its 51st year in 2019. The festival sidebar has been a launching pad for directors such as Spike Lee, Jim Jarmsuch, and more over the years.

Robert Eggers’ anticipated “The Lighthouse” with Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, Luca Guadagnino’s medium-length film “The Staggering Girl” and Japanese helmer Takashi Miike’s “First Love” are set to unspool at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight under the new leadership of Paolo Moretti.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Alejo Moguillansky's The Little Match Girl (2017) is showing December 17 – January 15, 2019 exclusively on Mubi.In theater anything is possible. There are no set rules, and just one perquisite: Genius. Perhaps that is why Chekhov had such immense tenderness for actors, knowing how easy it was to fall into the infinite gap between expectations and reality, ideal and circumstance. Chekhov, of course, wrote about the provinces, which furnished him a rich cast of secondary characters. Now Argentine filmmaker Alejo Moguillansky mines similar material in his latest feature, The Little Match Girl. Moguillansky’s film takes place in Buenos Aires, but do not be fooled. It is not the vainglorious megalopolis we associate with its 19th century splendor, but rather an increasingly battered, economically stretched, exhausted city that in its myriad deceptions shares an existential funk with the Chekhovian social landscape.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center is presenting Neighboring Scenes, a new showcase of contemporary Latin American cinema co- presented with Cinema Tropical. Taking place January 7-10, this selective slate of premieres highlights impressive recent productions from across the region and exhibits the vast breadth of styles, techniques, and approaches employed by Latin American filmmakers today.
Opening the series is Benjamín Naishtat’s "El Movimento," a stark, black-and-white snapshot of anarchy in 19th-century Argentina and follow-up to his acclaimed debut, History of Fear. Other highlights include the 2015 Cannes Caméra d’Or winner, César Augusto Acevedo’s "Land and Shade;" the U.S. premiere of Arturo Ripstein’s" Bleak Street," which has drawn comparisons to Luis Buñuel’s Mexican period; Rodrigo Plá’s Venice Horizons opener "A Monster with a Thousand Heads;" Pablo Larraín’s Silver Bear– winning and Golden Globe-nominated "The Club," which was also Chile’s submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar; and more.

After a hustling actor finds a treasure map detailing the location of ancient gold hidden near a town in the Misiones province named after the 19th-century politician Leandro N. Alem, he successfully persuades the producers to reframe the project as a portrait of the radical Alem (swapping feminist politics for anti-Eurocentric ones) and move the production there—so he can better search for the treasure. Fast-paced and hilariously self-reflexive, the film takes a playful approach to texts and history that is reminiscent of Borges.

Pablo Cedrón portrays the fiery, unhinged leader of a mysterious militia (modeled on Confederacy-era dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas’s Mazorca) who wantonly roam the pampas in an effort to “purify” and unite society, killing and plundering settlers along the way. In an attempt to make ends meet, they drug and rob dwarf twins (Juan Francisco Longoria and Guillermo López)—who themselves barely scrape by as doubles for professional luchadores. Ripstein masterfully contrasts the grittiness of alleyways and seedy apartments with gliding Steadicam cinematography, siding with neither the victims nor the perpetrators. Their idyll is shattered when a fifth priest arrives and, confronted by one of his victims, commits suicide. A young priest begins an investigation into the retirees’ pasts, setting off a series of events that call into question faith, piety, and complicity. Fusing elements of Edgar Allan Poe’s titular short story and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, Alejo Moguillansky and Fia-Stina Sandlund’s meta-film follows an Argentine-Swedish co-production in Buenos Aires shooting a biopic of the 19th-century realist author and proto-feminist Victoria Benedictsson. After a hustling actor finds a treasure map detailing the location of ancient gold hidden near a town in the Misiones province named after the 19th-century politician Leandro N. Alem, he successfully persuades the producers to reframe the project as a portrait of the radical Alem (swapping feminist politics for anti-Eurocentric ones) and move the production there—so he can better search for the treasure. Fast-paced and hilariously self-reflexive, the film takes a playful approach to texts and history that is reminiscent of Borges.

The Man's Woman and Other Stories directed by Amit Dutta will be screened in the International Competition section of the 11th Jeonju Film Festival in Korea. The festival will run from April 29 to May 7. Park Jinoh's debut feature Should Have Kissed will be the opening film of the festival while Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio's To the Sea will be the closing film of the festival.

Jff will screen 209 films from 49 countries this year, including 11 in the international competition.

Locarno, a Swiss fest dedicated to indie arthouse fair, especially with an arthouse lilt, has unveiled its lineup and it includes 10 world premiers. Locarno premiers serious weirdness (and awesomeness) like David Manuli's Beket (review here) which bowed last year.
