Let’s Make a Deal host Wayne Brady is set to topline an autobiographical hybrid comedy, which is in development at CBS.
Brady is collaborating on the project with his ex-wife, Mandie Taketa, as well as veteran Will & Grace writer-producers Tracy Poust and Jon Kinnally.
I hear the untitled comedy written and executive produced by the quartet is about a divorced couple who successfully co-parent in a blended multiracial family. CBS Studios is the studio.
In an interview with Access Hollywood, Brady spoke how his personal experience being part of a blended family during the pandemic helped shape the idea for the series.
He said that he has been spending a lot of time with his ex-wife, her boyfriend and their daughter while in quarantine. “It’s been natural for us. We didn’t need a quarantine to do this, we’ve been doing it for Maile’s whole life,...

CBS has been the most proactive among the Big 3 networks in making decisions on pilots coming off a 2020 pilot season decimated by the coronavirus pandemic. It has made calls on five projects, picking up three to series, The Equalizer reboot starring Queen Latifah, Silence of the Lambs sequel Clarice starring Rebecca Breeds; and the Chuck Lorre-Marco Pennette multi-camera comedy B Positive, headlined by Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford; while passing on two, drama The Lincoln Lawyer, which had a series production commitment, and comedy Fun.
B Positive was the only completed broadcast pilot this season, as the coronavirus-related Hollywood production shutdown hit just as most pilots were getting ready to start filming.

CBS won’t be having any Fun next season: The network has passed on the comedy pilot starring Ugly Betty alums Michael Urie and Becki Newton, according to our sister site Deadline.
The multi-camera pilot co-created by Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City, 2 Broke Girls) starred Urie and Newton as a brother and sister who team up to take over the family business: a funeral home. Urie’s character returned to his Pennsylvania hometown to help his sister, played by Newton, run the family’s struggling funeral home. The two siblings “always encourage each other to have fun...

Exclusive: CBS has passed on another high-profile project targeted for next season, comedy Fun, starring Ugly Betty standouts Becki Newton and Michael Urie. It had a pilot production commitment. The multi-camera funeral home comedy hailed from 2 Broke Girls co-creator/executive producer Michael Patrick King, former Ugly Betty executive producers Tracy Poust & Jon Kinnally and Warner Bros. TV.
The pass, which I hear involved the use of a force majeure contract provision allowing the network not to pay penalties, follows CBS’ decision not to proceed with The Lincoln Lawyer, its high-profile legal drama from The Practice creator David E. Kelley, based on Michael Connelly’s novels, which had a massive series production commitment.
As Deadline reported, CBS was expected to make more decisions on pilots that have not been shot because all production was shut down by the coronavirus pandemic, wreaking havoc in the broadcast pilot season. The network, which...

Becki Newton and Michael Urie were both fresh-faced twentysomethings when they were cast in Ugly Betty and went on to become the ABC dramedy’s breakouts as the scheming but lovable Amanda and Marc.
Almost a decade and a half later, Urie and Newton are reuniting to star as brother and sister in a multi-camera funeral home comedy series from 2 Broke Girls co-creator/executive producer Michael Patrick King, former Ugly Betty executive producers Tracy Poust & Jon Kinnally and Warner Bros. TV where King has been based.
Written by King, Poust and Kinnally, Fun is a life-long love story between a brother and a sister, played by Urie and Newton, who always encourage each other to have fun – no matter what hardship life is currently serving up. CBS has given a pilot production commitment to a multi-camera comedy set at a family-run funeral home.
Currently titled “Fun,” the series centers on a life-long love story between a brother and a sister, who always encourage each other to have fun – no matter what hardship life is currently serving up. The project is said to celebrate life in spite of the fact that the family business is a funeral home. As they say in their family: “You can’t spell funeral without f-u-n.” The brother returns to his Pennsylvania hometown to help his sister run the struggling business after his emotional and devastating break-up with show business.
Former “Ugly Betty” co-stars Becki Newton and Michael Urie will star in the series in addition to serving as producers. Michael Patrick King, the co-creator of CBS comedy “2 Broke Girls,” will write and executive produce along with Tracy Poust and Jon Kinnally.

It’s not an Ugly Betty revival but it’s pretty darn close: Michael Urie and Becki Newton will play siblings in a sitcom that’s in development at CBS, TVLine has learned.

“I wasn’t expecting to be nominated quite frankly,” admits Megan Mullally about her recent Emmy nomination as Best Comedy Supporting Actress for “Will and Grace.” During the show’s original run, she earned seven consecutive nominations in this category, winning in 2000 and 2006, as well as earning three Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Comedy Actress. In our exclusive interview (watch the video above), Mullally discusses the show’s successful revival, which has already been renewed for two additional seasons, and how she would be fine playing the role of Karen Walker “forever.”

“Will & Grace” co-creator Max Mutchnick admits he and David Kohan had no idea there was such a high demand for the series to return. “We’ve written it small, and we’ve thought of it small,” says Mutchnick, “and maybe that’s been the thing that’s worked for us because we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.” The NBC sitcom starring Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullally originally ran from 1998-2006, and it returned in 2017 after 11 years for what was initially supposed to be a 10-episode run. That morphed into a 16-episode season, and then a second- and third-season renewal. Watch our exclusive video interview with Mutchnick and Kohan above.

The cast and creators of NBC’s “Will & Grace” revival gathered for a panel discussion at Paleyfest on Saturday, March 17. Stars Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullally were on hand, as were creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick and director James Burrows, who has helmed every single episode of the series. The event was moderated by Dan Bucatinsky, who has guest-starred twice on the show (once in 2000 and once in 2018) as a persistent suitor Will can’t seem to get rid of. Listen to their entire 45-minute Q&A above.
Interest in the revival was first piqued by a nine-minute online reunion scene released in 2016 in support of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Mullally recalled that upon reading the script she emailed Mutchnick and asked, “Why can’t we just do the show again?” While the video didn’t end up winning the campaign for Clinton,...

The 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards take place on Feb. 11 with simultaneous ceremonies held in both New York and Los Angeles. Only scripts written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for these awards. As such, these kudos are not the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.
In the past nine years only 59 of the WGA nominees have numbered among the 90 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Indeed, 2014’s Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay, “Birdman,” was deemed ineligible. Likewise for one of this year’s leading contenders for that award: “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
On the television side, the leading nominees are “Better Call Saul,” which competes for best drama series writing as well as for two individual episodes and “The Americans,” which is up for both overall drama series writing and an individual episode. Over in comedy, reigning Emmy...

Twelve years after a controversial "Will & Grace" episode, a bizarre letter of complaint from a "former gay man" has emerged.
Produced in 2000, the episode showed Jack (Sean Hayes) joining a gay reparative ministry in an effort to seduce its "ex-gay" leader Bill (Neil Patrick Harris). After the episode aired, Mike Haley, who is identified as a "former gay man" who was then working at Focus on the Family, reportedly penned a letter to "Will & Grace" story editor Jon Kinnally -- a copy of which has since emerged on the website "Letters of Note."
In the letter, Haley requests a meeting with Kinnally, noting:

On Ugly Betty, romances hardly end on a happy note. But there's always something new to bring on the table right after, which will be the case for Marc St. James (Michael Urie). Showrunner Silvio Horta hinted that um, infatuation's in the air with the Bahamas episode coming up, especially for this character.
Ugly Betty executive producers Horta and Jon Kinnally told AfterElton.com about this new storyline, affecting the development of Marc. We all know about his relationship with Cliff (David Blue) in the second season, but the writer's strike hindered the show from pursuing that further. While Cliff could've been brought back, it was simply a better idea to give Marc a fresh start.

Warning: The following article contains general plot spoilers about the upcoming season of Ugly Betty.
Last week, Ugly Betty aired “Backseat Betty,” a touching episode involving Betty’s 15-year-old nephew, Justin. Over the course of the episode, we saw the friendship that is developing between Justin and Marc, an out gay man. But at the end of the episode, Justin announced, to everyone’s surprise, “I’m not gay” – although it was written in a very open-ended way.
We were curious about the future of Justin, Marc, and Ugly Betty in general, so we asked Silvio Horta, the out gay man who is the creator and executive producer for the series, and executive producers Jon Kinnally, who is also an out gay man, and Tracy Poust, who wrote last week’s episode.
What exactly did it mean when Justin claimed he wasn’t gay after being named homecoming queen by his classmates?...

A trio of Will & Grace co-executive producers, Gary Janetti and the writing team of Tracy Poust and Jon Kinnally, have been pinned with executive producer stripes and have been given the reins of the veteran NBC comedy next season as showrunners. All three are under overall deals with Will & Grace producer NBC Universal Television Studio. The move assures a smooth transition at the helm of the Emmy-winning comedy series, which was recently picked up for an eighth and probably final season. The pickup for 24 episodes has now been confirmed by NBC.
