When it released in 2016, one of the biggest complaints about Doctor Strange was that its hero hewed too close to Iron Man. It followed an arrogant man at the top of his game who suffers a humbling set back and discovers a new identity in the East. Also, facial hair. Surprisingly, bringing the two characters together in Avengers: Infinity War eased the comparison, as initial snark-offs between the duo eventually gave way to revealing their distinctive power sets.
But the movie almost went in the opposite direction, further winking at the interchangability between the two. Early concept art posted to Reddit shows Strange wearing Iron Man’s Mark 50 armor while facing off against Thanos’s minion the Ebony Maw. Created by Phil Saunders, who has worked on several MCU films, the images show Strange deflecting Ebony Maw’s needle attacks while wearing the armor, his Eye of Agamotto glowing in the center.

Gerry Duggan has quietly been reshaping the Marvel cosmic universe into its past glory. Back when series like Annihilation, Nova, and Guardians of the Galaxy where some of the best books in comics. Marvel must have noticed the success he was having as they have given him the reigns to their next big event and the buildup is already underway. The term event can be a dirty word in comics as the industry has burn many bridges due to over saturation. Despite those past failings Infinity Countdown brings with it some promise. If this issue is any indication of what we are in store for this may actual live up to the hype if its namesake.

In recent years, Marvel’s big events have been somewhat reactionary to whatever may be going on in the movies, with Civil War II being a prime example of that. And with the theatrical release of Avengers: Infinity War being just around the corner, many True Believers were probably expecting for some sort of grand cosmic tale to develop. Well, if that was your assumption, then you were 100% correct.
As it turns out, it’ll come in the form of Infinity Countdown, a five-issue series which we’re learning about via the exact same hyberbole that preceded every Marvel event in the past decade or so. Being billed as “the greatest epic in the history of the Infinity Stones” that will “lead to an even greater story – and one that will impact the entire Marvel Universe.”

As Marvel fans will know, Deadpool was originally created by Rob Liefeld back in the 1990s as a parody of DC’s Deathstroke. Hence the almost identical names – Slade Wilson/Wade Wilson. As the Merc with the Mouth’s popularity grew over the years, though, the character left behind his darker traits and pretty much became a hero, even serving alongside the Avengers. That’s all about to change, though, in his latest solo series.
First, let’s recap the tumultuous journey Wade went through in the recent Secret Empire event. As a double agent for the good guys, Deadpool worked alongside HydraCap to uphold the corrupted hero’s fascist regime while still feeding info to the underground resistance. The turning point came when he killed Phil Coulson under Steve Rogers’ orders. In an attempt to prove he was still on their side, Wade gave S.H.I.E.L.

Hello again, and welcome to the recently resurrected Panel Discussion. I’m Kieran, and every week I’m going to go through some of the best comics of the week to give you an idea what you should pick up that you might have missed. This is another stacked week with some fantastic first issues and great jumping on points for books you might be behind on, so let’s take a look at what’s on offer.
In terms of big debuts, this week’s runaway hit is Kyle Starks and Gabo’s Dead of Winter #1 from Oni Press. Now, I have absolutely no idea about the franchise this is based on, I believe it’s a board game? However, this debut issue gives you everything you need to know which is namely 1) There are zombies and 2) There’s a dog that really hates zombies. I think we all...

Who would have thought the character that would benefit the most from Secret Empire would be the merc with a mouth Deadpool? After the last issue, Gerry Duggan showed that Wade Wilson was more than random reference humor and breaking the fourth wall. When the time is right he can actually give us a story with some feeling behind it.
Now with Hydra in full America take over mode Deadpool has found himself still on the side of his hero Captain America Steve Rogers, although he is having his doubts. This is demonstrated in his unwillingness to spout out Hydra’s most infamous rallying cry. Rogers has slated Deadpool as the man to take out those who have failed to fall in line. This time his focus is on everyone’s favorite New Warrior, Speedball.

After two issues of stirring adventure issue number three of All-New Guardians of the Galaxy goes in an entirely different direction. It is the type of issue that will catch many of guard with the drastic change in tone and story. What we have is one gigantic dream sequence with little lead in to what exactly is happening. Gerry Duggan is getting these characters back to their roots and making them more than a long combination of jokes and gags. Considering how close this is to the release of the most recent film it is surprising Marvel is giving him so much freedom. Here’s hoping he turns it into something special.

This review is based off a volume that collects Spider-Man/Deadpool #6-7, 11-12 and 1.Mu.
As enjoyable as books chronicling the adventures of the Justice League or Avengers may be, they often don’t get to explore the interpersonal relationships shared between specific superheroes as often as we’d like. But, when you pare it down to two, you’re given a much different kind of team-up comic. Personally, I enjoy seeing the best buddy dynamic offered whenever Batman and Superman join forces or, likewise, whenever the Flash and Green Lantern go back to back. On the other hand, I also get a kick out of the veritable powder keg that is Daredevil and Punisher.
The focus of today’s review, though, Spider-Man/Deadpool, may be in a class of its own. You’ve got a do-gooder in Peter Parker and a mercenary in Wade Wilson, so, logically, they shouldn’t get along.

Way back when Steve Rogers was killed at the end of Civil War (Spoiler!) Marvel used that moment to showcase just how important of a character he was to the universe. They took the time to show just how many characters were greatly impacted by his death and why his downfall was so shocking. Now with Secret Empire they are taking that same idea but expanded upon it in some interesting ways.
With Deadpool #31 we see two different ways idolization impacts characters. On one side we have Deadpool, who has long admired Steve Rogers and Captain America specifically. He has long been searching for his acceptance and now that he has it he is finding he is unable to let it go no matter where Rogers’s loyalty lies. On the other side of the spectrum is Phil...

All–New Guardians of the Galaxy has a lot working against it immediately. For one the ‘All New’ tagline has greatly been overused by Marvel and for that matter so have the Guardians of the Galaxy. While it is understandable they would want to cash in one on of the biggest blockbusters of all time they milked that cow a little too much with so many crossovers and solo series. Brian Michael Bendis’s run left a lot to be desire so many are automatically overlooking this series just out of spite. If you are a fan of the Guardians I implore you to pick this up because this book is better than it’s been in years.

When we think of collected editions, we normally picture a trade paperback or hardcover that compiles an average of five or six issues of a given storyline into one tome. But since Deadpool plays by nobody’s rules but his own, expect the ninth volume of his current series to be an exception, not the rule as it were.
Here’s the deal: As you may have heard, the upcoming Deadpool #30 is slated to be an oversized affair, effectively amounting to 80 pages. Given that, it will retail at $9.99, a bit heftier than the average Marvel book, which tends to be priced at $3.99.
What’s interesting about this situation is that the publisher is opting to release it as its own trade paperback in the fall, rather than having it join subsequent issues for a collection. Now, this isn’t unheard of, as it does bring to mind DC Universe: Rebirth...

Sneak Peek Marvel Comics' "Deadpool" #28, written by Gerry Duggan and illustrated by Salva Espin, with covers by Reilly Brown and David Lopez, available March 1, 2017:
"...some couples hit a rough patch from time-to-time -- but only 'Deadpool' & 'Shiklah' get involved with a full scale monster invasion of 'Manhattan'. With 'Spider-Man' and the 'Mercs for Money' along for the ride.
"Deadpool's whirlwind romance with Shiklah was one of the most exciting times of his life. But that was then and this is now. The honeymoon is over, and reality has set in. Shiklah is a 'demon succubus' and 'Queen' of a monster kingdom hidden deep below Manhattan.
"And the problems between her and 'Wade' continue to pile up. Now, when an affront to Shiklah's people demands justice, a line will be crossed. As 'Monster Metropolis' declares war on the surface world, Deadpool will be faced with a decision.

There’s no denying that Deadpool is currently one of Marvel’s hottest commodities. With a highly successful movie under the Merc with a Mouth’s belt and a sequel in the works, it only makes sense that the House of Ideas have the popular anti-hero headline more than just one comic book.
When issue #28 arrives, writer Gerry Duggan and artist Salva Espin will be the ones to kickoff the “’Til Death Do Us…” six-issue crossover also set to involve Spider-Man/Deadpool and Deadpool & the Mercs for Money.
It’s inevitable that most of us settle down and tie the knot at some point, but it’s not every day that someone exchanges vows with a demon succubus. Well, Wade Wilson isn’t the average person, so seeing him go through with something such as that doesn’t surprise us too much.

Illegitimate children, secrets, lies, deception… The current Deadpool 2099 story sounds an awful lot like the past 30 years of The Bold and the Beautiful. Considering most comic books are really just undercover soap operas with tights, this shouldn’t surprise anyone. Nonetheless, Deadpool #25 brings the Wilson family drama to a close in this double-sized issue.
So, what’s the beef? Warda Wilson – Deadpool’s daughter – is still Po’ed at her pops for refusing to tell her where her mother, Shiklah, is. She issues him the following ultimatum: bring me my mommy or I’ll unleash holy hell on Madison Star Garden. Deadpool being Deadpool doesn’t do things simply, and attempts to reason with daddy’s little princess in his own peculiar way. When that doesn’t go down well, however, he’s forced to stop her with some help from his friends and Warda’s half-sister, Ellie. But can...

Seeing as how DC unveiled their Free Comic Book Day offerings earlier today, we were anxiously waiting for Marvel to lay their cards on the table and, needless to say, they did not disappoint. In one fell swoop, readers will be introduced to the new status quo for both the Guardians of the Galaxy and The Defenders when they open a copy of All-New Guardians of the Galaxy Fcbd #1.
Marvel Svp Sales & Marketing David Gabriel had this to say about the upcoming book:
“Each year, Free Comic Book Day is an amazing opportunity for publishers to showcase some of their incredible titles and stories. It’s an unparalleled opportunity to reach new fans and support our retail partners, so we’re thrilled to provide completely new content for this year’s offerings. Remember how hilarious Deadpool’s roaring rampage of revenge was in the movie? Well, it’s time for another revenge-based warpath, and this time… well, it’s more than a bit more serious.
For those who haven’t been keeping up with Gerry Duggan’s run on the comic, you’ve been missing out. He’s done an amazing job at combining the hi-jinx of the Merc with a Mouth with real solid character work, delving into the hero and peeling back the layers. The series has built a strong supporting cast, shaken them up, torn down and rebuilt everything that makes Deadpool who he is, and still managed to give us plenty of humor and wanton violence along the way.
This issue is, in many ways, the culmination of all that. It marks the end of a high-stakes arc, where Madcap’s revenge is carried out and puts those...

Marvel Comics has officially announced their new series All New Guardians of the Galaxy. The comic comes from writer Gerry Duggan (Deadpool, Nova), artist Aaron Kuder (Death of X), and colorist Ive Svorcina (Secret Wars).
The original character roster of Star-Lord, Rocket, Groot, Gamora and Drax are all set to return. There are a few interesting changes with some of the characters, such as Groot apparently being stuck in his tiny form with no one able to explain why he isn't regenerating, Then there's Drax the Destroyer, who is now Drax the Pacifist. According to Cb:
The series will pick up some time after 'Grounded,' the final arc of the current Guardians of the Galaxy series. All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #1 kicks off with the Guardians on a job and embroiled in a war between two of the Elders of the Universe, the Collector and the Grandmaster.

With a highly anticipated movie on the way, in addition to a new video game and having the animated series being renewed for a second season, it comes as no surprise that Marvel will continue to flood the market with all things cosmic in 2017 as it has announced a new comic book series in the form of All-New Guardians of the Galaxy.
Despite having “all-new” in the title, the lineup reflects that of what can be seen in the movies: Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, and even baby Groot. Gone are the Thing and Kitty Pride, who had appeared alongside the team previously. It’s just as well, too, considering it’s not a bad idea to attract casual costumers looking to delve into comic book collecting upon seeing the latest cinematic offering. Synergy often makes for an easier sell, after all.

Deadpool issue 17 is out and boy what a story it is. What happens when the Mercs for Money and Deadpool have a falling out? Hilarity mostly.
It should go without saying for Deadpool but the humor from Gerry Duggan is top notch. It really gives the story a Looney Tunes type of feel. If Daffy Duck were a murderous, insane assassin, he’d be Deadpool. I enjoyed the opening page that starts out normal and with one punch descends into pure lunacy.
Sorry
There are a lot of characters Duggan has to devote attention to and he was able to capture them nicely without anyone seemingly getting lost in the shuffle. While you come to a comic called Deadpool to see the hijinks of the main character, the attention to the minor characters in the story was a nice touch, taking a simple team breakup story and giving it some more flavor.

Thor’s making a house call for a very specific Marvel Universe doctor. Doctor Strange, that is. Actually, we don’t know that for sure, but it looks like that’s at least a strong possibility. Daley Pearson, a writer for shows like The Strange Calls and 7 Days Later, is based in Australia where Thor Ragnarok is shooting, and he posted some photos from the set of the film. There’s a great one of Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and director Taika Waititi, who may well be the funniest person to ever make a Marvel movie, and that’s a pretty high bar when you’ve got dudes like Shane Black, James Gunn, and Joss Whedon in the mix. There’s something that looks like a construction site. And then there’s this one — — where Hemsworth is holding a business card with a handwritten address on it. That address? It...

International Iron Man #2
Story: Brian Michael Bendis Art: Alex Maleev
Synopsis:
The mystery of Tony's real parents reveals some truths behind the history of the Marvel Universe that have been kept hidden for decades. Can Tony unravel the mystery before deadly history repeats itself?
Review:
More details are revealed about Tony’s relationship with Cassandra and how it might be the cause for all his current relationship problems. Also it’s hinted at in current times, Cassandra might know something about Tony’s real parents. A bit of a “filler” issue, but still some excellent art from Alex Maleev. Might be worth skipping and just getting a trade later on.
Score C+ The Ultimates #6

One of the reasons I was happy to bring the ongoing One Thing I Love Today column back was because it gives me a chance to simply sing the praises of something quickly, something that might not otherwise fit into the kind of coverage we do here at HitFix. A good example was when I put up the story about the Chewbacca mini-series from Marvel Comics by Gerry Duggan and Phil Noto. One of the strangest things about the first Star Wars for me was just how quickly I not only accepted the reality of the world that George Lucas created, but how deeply it sank into my own inner life. Star Wars figures were the key talisman of my childhood, and I spent many hours lost in private stories played out with those little plastic people. From that very first viewing of Star Wars in 1977, I have been head over heels for Chewbacca,...

One Thing I Love Today is a daily column dedicated to putting a spotlight on some pop culture item worth your attention. After all, there's enough snark out there. Why not start every day with one quick shotgun blast of positivity? Are you still basking in the afterglow of Deadpool? One of the many people you'd probably want to say thank you to is Gerry Duggan, as he's been writing the character in various titles for a while now, both with Brian Posehn and without him. He's become a prolific writer for Marvel Comics overall, and he's a very good storyteller with a wicked sense of humor. By far, though, my favorite thing he's done so far is Chewbacca, a five-part mini-series that's part of the overall push by Marvel Comics to publish both ongoing and standalone Star Wars titles. I think the main Star Wars title is great right now,...

This weekend, Deadpool heads to theaters to right the atrocities committed against the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. You can see what our movie critic Drew McWeeny thought of the film over here. But before you make Valentine’s Day plans to watch the Merc with the Mouth re-pop the superhero genre’s Rated R cherry, get to know the characters a little bit better. HitFix Harpy caught up with Gerry Duggan — the current writer for the Deadpool comics — to ask how much he knows about the film, if Deadpool is a feminist, and just who Negasonic Teenage Warhead is. By happy serendipity, I was also given a look at some pages from the upcoming Deadpool #8. Image Credit: Marvel Entertainment Hitfix Harpy: How long have you been writing Deadpool? As we began talking about editorial content we could publish to celebrate the release of Hail, Caesar!, the latest film from Joel and Ethan Coen, we realized that none of us had the same top five lists, and that it seems unusual for that to be the case. The Coens have had such a rich and varied career that it is impossible to pin them down to one style or one theme or one type of storytelling. Some people love their comedies. Some people love it when they get dark. Some people love the underdogs, the least-liked of their films. But what's clear is that every film they've made has its fans, and even their worst films are beloved by someone. There are few artists like the Coen Brothers, and we were delighted to get lists from each of our special guest contributors this time. The diversity of the replies...

Totally Awesome Hulk #1
Written by Greg Park

Published by Marvel Comics
Comic book reviewers these days can be so fickle. There’s one review on a comic site regarding this week’s Totally Awesome Hulk where the reviewer can’t seem to make his mind up about Bruce Banner. Despite identifying with Bruce Banner, he goes on saying, “I don’t think he’s needed in the Marvel Universe anymore” and then adds “Kids will always want to be the Hulk, but no kid has ever wanted to be Bruce Banner because of his anger issues.” This review was patronising, and of course it was a slap in the face of Hulk fans, especially one who commented on a forum “Kids are scared of Hulk Because of Banner. And that no kid ever wanted to be Banner; sorry, some of us did!
