20 years ago today, “Jumanji” had its theatrical release. Though the film had lukewarm reaction from critics, it was a box office success and has remained a favorite among family adventure movies. The film is based on Chris Van Allsburg’s children’s book about a game that’s “a young people's jungle adventure especially designed for the bored and restless.” It’s at once terrifying (those monkeys!) and funny (plenty of laughs supplied by the late Robin Williams) and touching (the relief and joy in Williams’ face when he realizes this nightmare of a game is finally over). A remake is in the works and set for a Christmas 2016 release. Other notable December 15 happenings in pop culture history: • 1939: “Gone With the Wind” premiered at Loew’s Grand Theater in Atlanta, the climax of three days of festivities in the Georgia city to celebrate the film’s debut. • 1966: Walt Disney died in Burbank,...

An all-star cast of singers become actors for "Angels Sing," a wan little holiday film that manages to show a little heart once it finally gets going.
Harry Connick Jr. stars as an Austin, Texas, history professor who doesn't put much stock in Christmas. Michael is always angling to dodge doing both Thanksgiving and Christmas with his parents (Kris Kristofferson, Fionnula Flanagan) for reasons he's reluctant to tell his granny-loving son (Chandler Canterbury). His wife (Connie Britton) is understanding.
Eventually, the kid finds out -- dad lost a brother over the holidays, years ago. Kind of ruined the day for him.
But Michael's ongoing house-hunting throws him in the path of this chuckling old man (Willie Nelson) with a McMansion for sale.
"How much, Mr. ... uuhhhh?"
"Call me 'Nick.'"
They seal the deal and Michael finds himself with the showplace of Live Oak Lane, one of those Christmas-crazed corners...

Title: Standing Up Director: DJ Caruso Starring: Chandler Canterbury, Annalise Basso, Radha Mitchell, Val Kilmer A nicely captured if fairly straightforward coming-of-age film about transcending adolescent summer camp bullying, the family-friendly “Standing Up” represents a rather curious filmography entry for director DJ Caruso, whose other movies (among them “Disturbia,” “Eagle Eye” and “I Am Number Four”) have almost all all showed a penchant for slick, pop-minded entertainment. Vacuumed free of darkened peril or any of the idiosyncratic pop of Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom,” which charts a somewhat broadly similar story of two pre-teens on the lam, this slight but well intentioned effort seems a better fit for small screen viewing. A pair of runaway teens deliver romance and thrills in sweet family adventure Standing Up Coming-of-age dramas are fast becoming a rare movie genre unless the kids have superhero capes or include girls named Katniss Everdeen or Bella Swan. Standing Up, writer/director D.J. Caruso’s warm-hearted and witty adaptation of Brock Cole’s 1987 teen novel The Goats, delivers plenty of heroism and teen-friendly excitement, all grounded by courage, resourcefulness and collaboration instead of any unearthly powers. Howie (Chandler Canterbury) is an eleven-year-old boy who runs away from bullies at his summer camp with Grace (Annalise Basso), a twelve-year-old girl and fellow teen outcast. Embarrassed by a cruel prank that leaves them alone on an island lake, Howie and Grace set off on a three-day journey to get away from the bullies and meet up with Grace’s mother (Radha Mitchell).

★★☆☆☆ Twilight Saga scribe Stephenie Meyer saw another of her teen-friendly novels adapted for the big screen this year with the release of The Host (2013). Helmed by Andrew Niccol - no stranger to glossy sci-fi following Gattaca and In Time - the film features yet another conflicted female protagonist, unable to decide which one of two hunky heartthrobs she prefers kissing. Importantly, this particular love triangle is played out against the aftermath of an alien invasion, with humanity now host to phosphorous, otherworldly parasites. Despite this promising premise, however, soppy romanticism does eventually take centre stage.
One of only a handful of scattered rebels is Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan), on the run from the invading race's agents with her younger brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury). Held captive after a near-fatal fall, Melanie is assimilated by the planet's new dominant species before being renamed 'Wanderer' ('Wanda') by arresting officer-turned-interrogator The Seeker (Diane Kruger...

Invasion of the Body Snatchers mixed with teen love, The Host has the potential to be a good movie and a solid addition to the sci-fi genre, but the film gets weighed down by a middle that kills the pace and a story that doesn’t seem to go anywhere. Based on the novel from Twilight's Stephenie Meyer (who also produced the film), The Host was written and directed by Andrew Niccol (1997's Gattaca) and stars Saoirse Ronan, Jake Abel, Max Irons, Frances Fisher, Chandler Canterbury, Diane Kruger, William Hurt, Boyd Holbrook, Scott Lawrence, and Emily Browning. The film introduces the plot quickly with a voice-over narration that explains the Earth is now nearly perfect. There are no more wars.

I'm one of the only males on the planet Earth who actually admit to liking the Twilight movies and books. That being said, I have to say I was excited when I heard sci-fi Director Andrew Niccol was adapting Stephenie Meyer's other novel, The Host, for the big screen. Gattaca was widely acclaimed and even In Time received mixed reviews. I was hoping Niccol would at least find a happy medium in between those two and give author Meyer's fans something to be proud of. Unfortunately, I didn't get what I wanted upon viewing the movie.

Chicago – Perhaps it’s something that every generation thinks but I really feel like the teens of this generation who get sucked into absolute nonsense like the truly horrendous “The Host,” just released on Blu-ray and DVD, are being intellectually damaged. They deserve better than this nonsense, arguably the worst movie of the year. And I’ve seen “Movie 43.”

The latest movie adaptation of a Meyer novel will likely not lead to a movie franchise Directed and adapted by Andrew Niccol, Stephenie Meyer's sci-fi book The Host debuted at no. 6 on the Us / Canada box-office chart this Easter weekend, earning an anemic $10.6 million at 3,202 North American venues, as per actuals found on the web site Box Office Mojo. Many pundits had been predicting The Host to debut in the mid-to-high teens. What that means (and considering the film's budget; see below), the romantic sci-fier featuring Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons, and Jake Abel is this year's most recent big box-office disappointment. (Pictured above: Abel as one of the men in Ronan's in The Host) It may seem mean-spirited to compare The Host to either Twilight or The Hunger Games; but then again, both of those movies were also adaptations of popular novels geared to young adults, and featured a...

Early estimates point to a quite underwhelming box-office debut for the latest movie adapation of a Meyer novel: Really, nobody was predicting that The Host, the Andrew Niccol-directed film version of Stephenie Meyer's sci-fi book about parasitical aliens would reach the North American gross of the initial Twilight movie (2008), also based on a bestseller written by Meyer. And certainly no one was expecting that Niccol's film would get even remotely near the success of Gary Ross' sci-fier / adventure drama The Hunger Games, which, like Twilight and The Host, was based on a popular book for young adults, featuring a heroine (Jennifer Lawrence) and two men in her life (Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson). (Pictured above: 2007 Best Supporting Actress nominee Saoirse Ronan in The Host.) In fact, The Host would have boasted a fantastic debut were it to earn as much as half of the $69.63 million (not factoring...

As always, this review is by a fan of Stephenie Meyer's literary worlds for the same. Also, there are spoilers within this review, so proceed with caution. She's done it again, ya'll! Once again, the "Twilight" queen has managed to create her own new world within which conflict and matters of survival delightfully play second fiddle to the - to borrow a phrase - pompatus of love. View slideshow: 'The Host' Without much fuss, we are thrust into this new Earth wherein souls inhabit the bodies of humans and try to run our world a little more peacefully than we have. We meet Melanie (Saorise Ronan) very briefly as one of the few remaining survivors who is willing to go out in a ball of fury to save her little brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury) and her lover Jared (Max Irons) from being taken. One precocious Seeker (Diane Kruger), however,...

Los Angeles — There's something about novelist Stephenie Meyer that induces formerly interesting directors to suddenly make films that are slow, silly and soporific. It happened consistently on "The Twilight Saga," and it happens again on "The Host," once-provocative writer-director Andrew Niccol's adaptation of Meyer's 600-plus-page post-Twilight novel that spent 26 weeks at No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list beginning in 2008.
Aimed squarely at the same tweens who contributed so generously to the bank accounts of everyone who became associated with Meyer's vampire franchise, this one swills in the same sort of thwarted Victorian-style romanticism while indulging a similar moonstruck vibe that can seemingly only be resolved in Meyer's work by selfless female sacrifice. Not to be deterred, Meyer's army of female fans surely will deliver a big opening for Open Road, but anything resembling Twilight numbers is a fantasy. Meyer intends to expand The Host into a trilogy,...

Entering theatres today, Andrew Niccol’s The Host marks the return of Stephenie Meyer’s work to the big screen, following the conclusion of The Twilight Saga last year.
If it does well, there’s a potential for the adaptation to be a franchise-started for all involved, with Meyer having previously spoken of the possibility of turning the original novel into the first instalment of a trilogy.
We’ve seen plenty from the film so far to suggest that it’s another brilliant sci-fi blockbuster from Niccol. And with the film heading to the multiplex today, we’ve got what looks to be a final trailer to share, giving a little more of a focus on the romantic side to the story.

Disembodied: Niccol Unable to Overcome Parasitic Source Material
For the sake of comparison, it’s safe to say that the latest adaptation of a Stephanie Meyer’s novel, The Host, makes for a better piece of cinematic artifice than any of the Twilight films. But not by much. For those in the know, sci-fi guru Andrew Niccol, whose favorite motif usually tends to be artificial reality (his directorial debut was Gattaca and he wrote The Truman Show), wrote the screenplay adaptation and directed this grueling effort, which lazily follows the same formula as Meyer’s other works but insert aliens where you’d think vampires.
It’s the not too distant future and mankind has been infiltrated by an alien race that takes over human bodies, erases memories and then uses these empty vessels to make the world a better place. However, there are pockets of human resistance, fleeing to...

Wouldn’t you know it, interplanetary teenage love is hard. That’s the gist of Andrew Niccol’s (“Gattaca”) new film, “The Host.” This should come as no surprise. After all, the movie is based on the novel of the same name by Stephenie Meyer, who penned everyone’s favorite sparkly vampire books. “The Host” is also only about as interesting as maudlin young love sounds, which is too bad, because the premise actually has a great deal of potential. An alien race called Souls has taken over Earth. They’re squiggly little blobs of light who occupy our bodies, turn our eyes a creepy incandescent blue, and now outnumber humans a million to one. Those are not good odds for survival. Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) is one of the last remaining humans, travelling with her young brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury), and her pasty, scrawny boyfriend Jared (Max Irons). Emaciated and pale,...

Latest adaptation of a bestselling Meyer novel has received atrocious ratings on the review-aggregator web site Rotten Tomatoes "Dopey, derivative and dull, The Host is a brazen combination of unoriginal science-fiction themes, young-adult pandering and bottom-line calculation," says New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis. And Dargis' opinion is one of the kinder ones that U.S. critics have written about Andrew Niccol's mix of romance, adventure, and science-fiction, starring Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, Max Irons, and Jake Abel, and co-produced by the author of the novel on which the film is based (Niccol himself is credited for the adapation): Stephenie Meyer, best known as the brain behind the Twilight Saga literary and cinematic franchises. (Pictured above: Ronan, a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nominee back in early 2008, and co-star Abel) Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets The Twilight Saga? In the future, hunger, violence and money have disappeared. Lying is unthinkable. And stealing -- from the place where one acquires one's every need, a building labeled "Store" -- is pointless. Because we're all wearing spotless white suits and driving shiny, chrome-plated Lotus Evoras. Well, a lot of us are.
Humanity has been "perfected," thanks to the aliens. They came, they moved in -- not just onto the planet, but into our bodies. And now, the human race is all but extinct, our bodies governed by seemingly benign conquerors. Free will dies as our corpses become "hosts" to the "souls" of those who apparently know what's best for us and make us serve "the common good."
But Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) is resistant to this body snatching. She debates and wars with the old soul, "Wanderer," who has invaded her most personal space -- her mind. Melanie wants to shake free of these alien bonds,...

Here's one last trailer for director Andrew Niccol's new sci-fi alien thriller The Host, which stars Saoirse Ronan (Hanna), Max Irons, Jake Abel, Diane Kruger, William Hurt, and Frances Fisher. I'm not the biggest fan of those Twilight films, but I'm going to give this one a shot because I like the director and the cast. There's a chance that it could be a decent movie. The new trailer shows of some new footage, and puts a focus on the the romance aspect of the film. The movie comes out this weekend on March 29th! The question is... will you be seeing this or G.I. Joe: Retaliation this weekend?

Dallas, TX was one of the lucky cities chosen as a stop on the press tour for Stephenie Meyer's newest young adult sci-fi romance The Host. Brilliantly scheduled for release mere weeks after the last chapter in The Twilight Saga hits Blu-ray and DVD, it's perfect timing to kick off a new saga to fill the gap left by the vampire / werewolf franchise. However, this time audiences get complex love stories and crises of conscience between aliens and humans.
Author Meyer and actors Max Irons, Jake Abel, and Chandler Canterbury invaded the Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Dallas TX to greet hundreds of fans who stood in line for hours to get the opportunity. The crowd was made up of mostly mothers and their daughters, but there were a few men awaiting their turn as well. The first two girls in line had traveled hundreds of miles to get...

Author and producer Stephenie Meyer joined director Andrew Niccol and castmates like Diane Kruger, Saoirse Ronan, Jake Abel, Max Irons and Chandler Canterbury on the blue carpet for the event and talked about a few things of interest to her fans. Luckily enough, she's already got outlines and four chapters drafted. 'The Host' Photo credit: Open Road Films According to USA Today, she added that she feels confident it'll get done so long as she has her music but that she's unsure whether The Host will be a trilogy or not.
