Ok, I’ve thought about this long and hard, discussed with my local priest and therapist, and after much internal strife, I’ve decided it’s time. You hear a lot about rip-offs for franchises, particularly the big ones. We have Jaws rip-offs, Exorcist rip-offs, Halloween rip-offs, and more. What you don’t hear a lot about, and good lord do they exist, are the multiple rip-offs of Gremlins. Gremlins got its own incredible sequel and then finally this year its very own animated show that is… fine… it’s fine. But with Gremlins profitability came the clones. We got the fun and good with the Critters franchise, the bad with both Munchies and Hobgoblins,...

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...

Some of the movies we talk about have opinions fueled by nostalgia if they are good or reputation if they are bad. Of course, everything is subjective when speaking about how you feel about a movie. It can be tied to events in your life that make you happy or sad. You can enjoy it on the strength of an actor, writer, or director you enjoy being involved or hate it for those exact reasons on a creator not being your favorite. Some things are irrefutable though such as box office or critical appraisal. Van Helsing (watch it Here) was the culmination of what Stephen Sommers had been working towards with tales of fantasy like The Adventures of Huck Finn...

I’ve been on a bit of a TV kick lately. You’ll see it coming up in one of the adaptation videos but also in what I’ve been watching. The 2023 season of Creepshow has been a lot of fun and Mike Flanagan’s “Succession mixed with a Giallo” in Fall of the House of Usher has been one of my favorite pieces of media this year. It reminded me a lot of growing up watching the second coming of TV horror movies in the 90s. I hesitate to call it the golden age because I think the 70s still holds that title but the 90s had all manner from Stephen King adaptations,...

When did the Texas Chainsaw movies get so muddled with so many timelines? It’s not a hard thing to do. People get lost in Texas and end up victims of Leatherface and his family. I’m not saying there shouldn’t be a story line or a variation on things from time to time, hell, that’s what made Freddy, Michael, and Jason so popular. You could have even done something like the legacy sequel for Halloween, at least the first one. Oh wait, you did, and it didn’t turn out well with characters that made terrible decisions and weren’t likeable in the first place? Oh yeah, I remember that one.

A black sheep doesn’t have to be considered bad to have that loving title and distinction. I mean, some of them are considered quite bad and need the layers peeled down to show off the good inside. There are other cases though. A movie can also be a black sheep if it was buried by a more popular outing like The Last Broadcast being utterly forgotten after the behemoth The Blair Witch Project made its appearance. Sometimes, like Last Broadcast, it can just be buried withing its own genre, decade, year, or as in today’s title, all 3. I’ve seen more than a few comments for this one so let’s take a look at werewolves in 1981. No,...

Its hard for a sequel to be better than the original – no, hey! Don’t close the article and please hold all hate in the comments until the end. I’m not saying Creepshow 2 (watch it Here) is better than the first movie, that’s just silly. Ok, so it’s hard for sequels to eclipse their previous iteration. Godfather II is always the answer to that but there are other things that you can prefer. Some people prefer the breakneck action of Aliens to the slasher in space of Alien. Others may enjoy Friday the 13th Part 2 with its higher violence (although it does have the same body count) and introduction to Jason to part 1’s mommy revenge story.

The Ouija: Origin of Evil episode of The Black Sheep was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Brandon Nally, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The Ouija board, and that’s weejee board not weeja board with all due respect to Joe Bob Briggs, has been a constant source of fascination since it’s inception in 1890. Ghostly movements and other supernatural appearances went back further than that and there were crude inceptions before 1890 but that’s when the board as we know it came about. It was commercialized sometime later and of course; it’s showed up as a device in horror movies ever since. The Witchboard series that started in 1986 is probably the most popular series that features the spirit communicator but another, more straightforward series called Ouija is also out there. One of the quintessential drive in kinda guys to me is Frank Henenlotter. Not only because of the anointing from the patron saint of Drive-ins himself, Joe Bob Briggs, but also just from a horror core memory. Long before I knew about the fabled 42nd Street in New York and all the magical movies that were shown there, I was introduced to Belial and his brother Duane on grainy VHS from Video Unlimited. That’s the magical part about being a horror fan. My brothers weren’t even particularly fond of the first movie, but knew it was an important piece of independent horror cinema. Shot for 35,000 and released in April of 1982, Basket Case is now enshrined in Moma,...

It’s a rare thing to see a horror series with near complete creative control from one person. Currently, Damien Leone seems to be in the drivers seat for the Terrifier series that we are certain to get more entries in and I’ve talked about the Chucky/Child’s Play series that Don Mancini is the driving force for. There’s also another Don that’s in charge of another important horror series. Don Coscarelli gave us one of the most original and successful independent films of all time with 1979’s Phantasm. He wrote, directed, shot, and edited that first movie with his dad helping produce it and his mom doing costumes, production design,...

Scanners is one of those seminal 80’s sci fi horror flicks. It’s also done by the master of body horror David Cronenberg. It’s a great flick that didn’t need any sequels and just by saying that I have unleashed the probability of a remake and more sequels coming our way. It’s the rule of horror flicks. Cronenberg isn’t immune to sequels either, especially ones he had no involvement in like The Fly 2. Nothing wrong with that movie, it’s actually a lot of fun, but The Fly absolutely didn’t need a sequel. While The Dead Zone was eventually turned into a TV show starring Anthony Michael Hall, that...

Before we get into it, let’s address the elephant in the room. This video is not condoning or supporting the behavior of the writer/director of Jeepers Creepers. And so the focus will not be on them and they will not be named. It is solely to focus on a film, not the actions of the filmmaker. It’s a hard line to walk with art and the artist when it comes to this film and wherever you land on how you view this is fair. But as a monster movie, we will review as just that… a movie.

The creature feature just isn’t explored enough anymore. Jaws was a monster of a success story and ended up having three sequels on its own and had a slew of imitators. 1980 would give us, in my humble opinion, one of the better ones with Alligator starring Robert Forster. It was successful too, making 6 and a half million on a 1.5-million-dollar budget. I know that’s not crazy money, but it was a hit and had a fun pedigree with it that remains very popular today. Its one of the movies that keeps selling well with new and old fans and so it recently got put on 4K. There weren’t as many creature flicks through the rest of the...

A couple months ago, we looked back at the 1988 film Pumpkinhead with an episode of our Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series. Now we’re moving on to an examination of the 1994 sequel Pumpkinhead 2: Blood Wings (watch it Here) – and since this isn’t exactly one of the most popular sequels around, we’re covering it in an episode of our The Black Sheep video series. After 35 years, another gang of teens robs the cabin of an old witch. Using some blood and a spell taken from her house, the...

Sometimes when a horror franchise is really on a roll, we’ll get sequels that are just one year apart from each other. They’re two of the most infamous, championed, and bloodiest American slasher movies of their era. Not only that, but they’re also the most franchisable, with a total of 25(!) entries, including originals, sequels, reboots, and remakes between the two of them. That’s, like, a lot of hacked-up horny teenagers.
The original 1978 Halloween from John Carpenter along with the initial Friday the 13th film have stood the test of time as bonafide slashers that are essential to any Halloween horror marathon. The films are complete with two iconic villains in the form of Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees (kind of), a house full of kills, and unsettling music that’ll make your spine tingle — or channel the world’s most spiteful mother.
But only one of these films will make it out alive! So let’s go trick or treating in Haddonfield and take a dip at Camp Crystal...

A new episode of our The Black Sheep video series has arrived online, and in this one we’re looking back at a rather unpopular sequel: 1983’s Jaws 3-D (watch it Here)! Many people’s appreciation for the Jaws franchise ends with Jaws 2, but in the video embedded above we’re letting you know why we think Jaws 3-D deserves a bit more love. Check it out!

But the facility’s attempt to keep the shark in captivity has dire consequences: A much larger mother shark appears in search of its offspring. They’re two of the biggest movie stars in modern Hollywood history: Academy Award winners, philanthropists, Sexiest Men Alive (what? that’s what People said!), and not to mention notorious pranksters. George Clooney and Brad Pitt breakthrough big in the ‘90s with films like Se7en and TV shows like ER, hit peak stardom in the 2000s with the Ocean’s trilogy, and have never left the limelight since.
From humble (even embarrassing?) beginnings and Bat-nipples to the Oscar stage, social activism, and epic prank wars, Clooney and Pitt have had storied careers and lives. But only one A-Lister can win this battle.
So let’s toss this curious case up in the air as we get ready for… Face Off!

Many of the movies John Carpenter has directed are frequently mentioned as some of the greatest genre movies ever made… but there are also Carpenter movies that don’t get referenced very often. One that you rarely hear about is his Village of the Damned (watch it Here), based on the John Wyndham novel The Midwich Cuckoos and a previous film adaptation that was released in 1960. Check it out in the embed above!
Village of the Damned has the following synopsis:
Ten months after the small California town of Midwich was struck by a mysterious event during which everyone in the village fell unconscious at once, 10 local women give birth on the same day.
