Hopeful episode

Warning: Spoilers
A glorious start to the season, a little hope in Gilead. June is a nation's #1 heroine and enemy. Like it.

This is war !
Dropofwater28 April 2021
A great start to a promising season. Actoes performance is still excellent, and beautiful cinematography. Gilead think that their enemy is Canada, are preparing for the war outside the border, but the biggest enemy is within. Hopefully we'll get a great conclusion.

Great episode! Very heart wrenching

Love the introduction of the new character. Brings a new perspective to show. Was worried that it would be like a similar arc to previous seasons but so far is very refreshing.

Stop blaming June...
trixie3018 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Certainly there are flaws with the episode, but I'm tired of people blaming June for everything that goes wrong and every death that happens. Supposedly, women (and men) are fighting for their freedoms. They are sentient, autonomous human beings capable of making their own decisions. Last season, Cmdr Lawrence blamed June for the failed escape attempt that his Marthas (and others) were already planning and ready to execute. June got involved because another woman couldn't do it. When it went wrong, he blamed June. Seems like many viewers do the same thing, but the choices made by others are theirs to own.

For those who say June is despicable for encouraging Mrs. Keyes to kill the Guardian who was one of her many rapists, I must disagree. Mrs. Keyes demands that June and the others be revolutionaries or leave. She says she wants to be part of the fight. It would be foolhardy in the extreme to wait until an actual battle to see if this abused teenager has it in her to do what is necessary.

I do think it awfully convenient that once again June sacrifices her freedom. But I suppose the writers decided it was necessary to move us to the next round of depravity by the regime. June is absolutely obsessed with freeing her daughter, but it's not unreasonable to ask "At what cost?"

I found a few parts odd
moov_e_c_er2 January 2023
The idea of escape to a farm was great. The idea to settle there and wait to maybe be found and no one seems to want to move on? Odd.

I simply didn't believe the child wife and her stories. Based on previous wives who are all older so maybe only young ones are passed around? Odd either way.

The idea at any time during this show/years that one could breakdown is very possible. But the idea that they take little information, don't ask or verify anything, blindly take every single word for truth, and then become the ultimate AUNT to instigate and insight essentially a riot and then step away... super odd as wouldn't one want to be themselves, be free, be just and not simply do exactly as the sick aunts that train and control them? I see where this is going but it's odd choices scattered around.

Revolution in the Shadows
badeclerck5 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The much-anticipated return of The Handmaid's Tale in its fourth season doesn't disappoint, opening with an episode that plunges viewers straight into a world rife with tension, rebellion, and shifting dynamics. The narrative unfolds on multiple fronts, masterfully weaving together the struggles of the handmaids, the consequences faced by the Waterfords, and the enigmatic new character, Miss Keyes.

The episode kicks off with the handmaids' daring mission to rescue June and escape with the help of a sympathetic Eye. The tension is palpable, amplified by the ever-looming threat of Gilead's oppressive regime. The stakes are high, and the viewer is immediately immersed in the dire circumstances faced by June and her fellow rebels.

On the other side of the spectrum, Serena and Fred Waterford grapple with the fallout of June's audacious escape. Fred's immediate reaction is to resort to violence, reflecting his desperation and loss of control. Serena, intriguingly, appears somewhat satisfied with the outcome, hinting at the complex dynamics within the Waterford alliance. The looming specter of war adds another layer of uncertainty, foreshadowing the tumultuous events to come.

Commander Lawrence, after facing judgment for his actions, takes an unexpected turn as he is released to serve as a consultant on potential strategies for invading Canada. This unexpected twist not only highlights the pragmatic and opportunistic nature of Gilead's leadership but also sets the stage for broader geopolitical tensions.

The enigmatic Miss Keyes emerges as a central figure in this episode, adding a new layer of complexity to the narrative. Her traumatic experiences at the hands of the male commanders are hinted at and later confirmed, painting a chilling picture of the horrors inflicted upon young girls within Gilead. The eerie connection between Miss Keyes and June, marked by a mix of maternal care and shared trauma, introduces an unsettling dynamic that promises to shape the course of the season.

Amidst the turmoil, the group of handmaids led by June finds a fleeting moment of respite, raising the question of how long they can maintain this fragile semblance of freedom. The episode sets the stage for a season filled with intrigue, rebellion, and the relentless pursuit of justice in the face of oppressive forces. As The Handmaid's Tale continues to evolve, its ability to captivate audiences with its nuanced storytelling remains as potent as ever.

June's one-dimensional face - part 1
cjonesas26 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 1: Mumbo Jumbo continuing, this time in Canada in a sort of farm house. Nothing really special happening, same nonsense of June's close-up jaded still face and watery eyes, dirty revenge, "brain-washing" and a capable cast being dragged in the mud, physically and psychologically.

All over the place
racheltaylor-7822330 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There were some inconsistencies that didn't really make sense to me. June wants to protect the young Mrs Keyes after learning she was sexually assaulted but then June tells her to kill a man. While that man was one of the perpetrators, killing anyone is very psychologically damaging, especially for a young girl. The very end of the episode was also confusing. It's clear June thinks of Mrs Keyes as a daughter/younger sister but Mrs Keyes' motive for laying down with June are unclear. Was she looking for comfort from a friend or was it something more in her mind?

Halting and heavy-handed
Leofwine_draca23 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A disappointing start to season four. Moss's recovery is slow and halting and the change of setting to yet another creepy old building and its weird owners feels too familiar. Plus Moss now "hulks out" with her psycho face at regular intervals. The heavy-handed plotting reinforces the message that the patriarchy is evil, in case we'd forgotten.

A different show, feels unfinished and muddled
smj-9202230 September 2021
This episode seems so completely different from all previous, it's as if it hasn't been properly edited or produced. Scenes that run on too long or finish too soon, seemingly unfinished digital effects and actors that only seem mildly invested.

Not the same show
Moody20086 September 2021
This episode was a huge disappointment. I was expecting the new season for a long time, and when this episode appeared it felt nothing like the show I loved.

Nothing really happened this entire episode. June turned from a calculated intelligent mastermind, to a brash, emotional ruin who encourages young kids to kill people.

The story turned from a bunch of religious psychos capturing a country in their madness, to a bunch of evil men raping innocent women. The show got woke, and not in a good way.
