The dust was just beginning to settle and the smell of guzzolene was still in the air after Wednesday night’s high-octane Cannes premiere of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. But after more than a decade of development and a grueling shoot, the work was not done for filmmaker George Miller and stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, who faced the international press during a lively conference to discuss the long journey to their Fury Road prequel.
Australian filmmaker Miller has now made five Mad Max films over 45 years, but none have been as anticipated as Furiosa. That’s thanks to the pedigree of Fury Road, Miller’s 2015 film that introduced the world to Imperator Furiosa, played in that feature by Charlize Theron. It is considered one of the greatest action movies of all time and became a surprise awards season juggernaut that won six Oscars.

Messages have been pouring in to pay tribute to Jess Search, producer and co-founder of U.K.’s Doc Society, who died Monday from brain cancer at the age of 54.
Search was a founding director of Doc Society, the mission of which is to “unleash the transformational power of documentary film to address the two critical and intertwined issues of climate change and democracies in crisis.”
Before that, she was a commissioning editor at Channel 4 and a founder of Shooting People, the online filmmakers network. She was also a board member of the U.K. think tank Ippr. She moderated panel discussions for IDFA, the Skoll World Forum, the Trust Women conference, and Doc Society’s Good Pitch.
Search was nominated for an Emmy for “Virunga.” Her recent executive producer credits included “F@ck This Job,” “Welcome to Chechnya” and “Cold Case Hammarskjöld.”

Of Night and Light: The Story of Iboga and Ibogaine tells the astounding unknown story of what might be the aha scientific breakthrough moment of our generation.
Back in 1962 a teenage psychonaut in New York City named Howard Lotsof experimented with an obscure psychedelic from the root bark of a West African shrub and recognized its unique therapeutic potential. Together with his African-American wife Norma, a pair of outsider NYU film students, they dedicated their lives to getting science and government to research it, convinced that it would be of great medicinal benefit, despite it sounding too good to be true,...

Barry Sonnenfeld leaped from hot cinematographer status to A- list director with this sure-footed big screen adaptation of the TV show based on Charles Addams’s marvelously morbid New Yorker cartoons. The cast is ideal: Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia complement TV’s Carolyn Jones and John Astin without inviting comparisons. Winning an imaginary award for making sick jokes safe for PG-13, the script has true wit. The characters have depth as well, which is wonderful. Daring to be out of step with the times, the elaborate production, costumes and special effects are all on the same page: director Sonnenfeld and producer Scott Rudin see to it that the goofy premise never wears thin. The 4K encoding is a dazzler.

It rather famously only takes a few minutes for Pixar’s animated classic “Up” to reduce audiences to tears, a record which could be broken by Lucy Walker’s brutal new documentary “Bring Your Own Brigade.” After a brief introduction to a survivor of a horrifying California wildfire, the film cuts to similar apocalyptic blazes all over the world, and in particular the image of a helpless koala bear on fire, crying out in pain, until it’s saved by human hands.
Walker’s documentary sometimes spares us the gruesome details and terrifying life-or-death despair of wildfire victims. But “Bring Your Own Brigade” also spends much of its first act immersed in the inferno of California’s Camp Fire of 2018, with cell-phone footage of citizens unable to escape gridlock as their cars begin to overheat in the surrounding flames. Panic is in the air, everyone seems to be about to die,...

When British filmmaker Lucy Walker moved to Los Angeles in 2008, she was struck by a seasonal phenomenon many residents of the Western U.S. had come to accept as normal: raging and increasingly deadly wildfires. “I was thinking, ‘Why is nobody making a film about this?'” says Walker, who lives in Venice.
Armed with the curiosity of an outsider, Walker, who earned an Oscar nomination for her 2010 feature documentary Waste Land, about an artist who scavenges at a massive landfill in Rio, already had raised some financing from online education pioneer Lynda Weinman to make a documentary on ...

It’s a familiar refrain these days: this year’s Sundance Film Festival will look a fair bit different than years past, but the same depth of filmmaking talent appears to still be on offer. And now, for the first time ever, film fans can stream all of the festival’s slate in the safety and comfort of their own homes.
This year’s robust lineup features plenty of familiar names and faces, including Edgar Wright, Lucy Walker, Robin Wright, Betsy West and Julie Cohen, Siân Heder, Sion Sono, Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones, Ana Katz, Kevin Macdonald, and many more. More than half the lineup is first-time filmmakers, and they range from established names like Rebecca Hall and Jerrod Carmichael to newcomers like Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr. and Carlson Young.

The first trailer for Stephen King's The Dark Tower has arrived, and we found tons of references, clues, and easter eggs...
For a long time, it was thought to be impossible - a film adaptation of Stephen King's fantasy horror epic about a Gunslinger traveling through different worlds to stop an evil Man in Black from destroying the fixed point that holds all of reality together: the Dark Tower. Yet, we'll finally see this story on screen, as the man in black flees across the desert, and the gunslinger follows.
After suffering several setbacks through the years - getting this movie made has been a journey almost as epic as Roland's - The Dark Tower is almost here. Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) directed and co-wrote the film adaptation. Fellow Danish filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen helped rewrite the script, which was originally penned by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner.

The dinosaurs still making films better embrace virtual reality, according to director Lucy Walker.
Her impressive roster of documentaries have earned her two Oscar nominations: One for her feature, “Waste Land,” and one for a short, “The Tsunami and The Cherry Blossom.” She was recently tapped to direct the followup to Wim Wenders’ “Buena Vista Social Club.” Filming “Buena Vista Social Club: Adios” sparked an interest in Cuban music and dance, which led Walker to make “A History of Cuban Dance,” a lively Vr short chronicling Cuban history through its many dance styles. The feature will also have an accompanying Vr film.
Walker is also currently a creator with Chris Milk’s Vr company, Within (formerly Vrse), a prolific production house making some of the most narratively compelling virtual reality films out there.

When it comes to this year’s Academy Awards, no word is more buzzworthy than “diversity”. For the second year in a row the Oscars have nominated only white actors in their four main acting categories, sparking backlash and, as a result, inciting the Academy to announce new changes to tackle its “diversity problem”.
Amidst another year of #OscarsSoWhite trending on Twitter, however, the fact that 2015 has been an exceptionally strong year for women has been largely overlooked. Three of this year’s best picture nominees (Brooklyn, Room, Mad Max: Fury Road) are female-centric and feature strong female protagonists in the center of the action. In fact, even outside of those films and their performances, a number of women are nominated for best picture as producers, as well. Peripatetic L.A. filmmaker Lucy Walker likes to plant seeds of ideas to see if they grow into movies she might want to make. She's picky about what material is strong enough to support the time and energy it takes to shoot a must-see documentary. If a story does not warrant a feature, she may turn it into a short instead. Her sky-high standards have yielded back-to-back Oscar nominations, for feature "Waste Land" (2010) and short "The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom" (2011). In a world packed with excellent documentaries, Walker's tend to rise to the top. Read: 'Crash Reel' Documentarian Lucy Walker Knows Where She's Going Her latest, the moving and shocking short "The Lion's Mouth Opens," debuted in 16-minute form at Sundance 2014, won the Audience Award for Best Documentary Short at Michael Moore's 2014 Traverse City Film Festival as well as Cinema Eye Honors for best doc short, was...

Scarlett Johansson Oscar dress Scarlett Johansson at the Oscars Looking great in a long purple dress, Scarlett Johansson displays her tight-fitting costume and bare back at the 83rd Academy Awards held on Feb. 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Oscar 2011 co-host and Best Actor nominee James Franco (for Danny Boyle's 127 Hours) thus introduced Johansson and fellow Oscar presenter Matthew McConaughey: "I am six degrees of Kevin Bacon away from our next two presenters. Figure it out on the Internet." Well, if you're lucky. Some have remarked that Franco was a more effective Oscar host online, where he tweeted some of the evening's to-dos, than on the stage of the Kodak Theatre. His fellow equally panned Oscarcast host was actress Anne Hathaway. Scarlett Johansson movies Scarlett Johansson has been featured in more than 40 films since her debut at age 10 in Rob Reiner's North, back in 1994. Johansson, in fact,...

What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man, You cannot say, or guess, for you know only A heap of broken images, where the sun beats, And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief, And the dry stone no sound of water. - “Waste Land – The Burial Of The Dead” It's strange, I admit it, but T.S. Eliot's poetic lines on cultural decline and the fragile human spirit are making me think of the Rayburns. They're the pillars of the Florida Keys community at the center of “Bloodline,” the new original Netflix series created by Todd A. Kessler, Glenn Kessler, and Daniel Zelman. In case you didn't know that, or haven't caught up with the entire season yet and wish to have nothing spoiled, this article will be waiting for you when you return. For almost 30 years, Mark Landis forged artwork and passed it off as his own to various museums around the country. It wasn’t until Matthew Leininger, a registrar at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, investigated the pieces in 2008 that the forgery was exposed. Leininger dedicated his time to investigating Landis further, and the scale of forgeries was revealed in 2012. Both men are featured in Art and Craft, a documentary about Landis, directed by Jennifer Grausman and Sam Cullman and co-directed by Mark Becker. Because Landis never sold his work to the museums, only donated the works in what he calls acts of “philanthropy”, he was never prosecuted.
The Hollywood Reporter’s John DeFore said, “The film will appeal to art lovers, but some viewers who can hardly tell their Cezannes from Chagalls will find the story fascinating as well.”

If both women are nominated for best director, that would also be a historical moment. Whether you want to immerse yourself in the world of birds, bees, baseball or backup singers, Netflix has a documentary for you. Missed "Man on Wire"? It's on there.
Here are films that changed the world, righted wrongs, pinpointed a moment in history, or simply shone a light on a previously unknown subset of society. (Availability subject to change. Films are unrated, except as noted.)
1. "20 Feet from Stardom" (2013) PG-13
This Oscar-winning doc shines a spotlight on the relatively unknown backup singers behind such superstars as Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Mick Jagger, and Stevie Wonder.
2. "The Act of Killing" (2012)
The director invited killers -- men who took part in the horrific purge that left more than 500,000 dead in Indonesia in the 1960s -- to reenact their crimes on film, resulting in a bizarre look inside the mind of men capable of mass murder.

Directed by John Maloof and Charlie Siskel, Finding Vivian Maier documents Maloof’s journey to discover more about Vivian Maier after purchasing a box of her negatives in 2007. He began the search a few years later, after he realized the negatives consisted of some of the best undeveloped street photography of the 20th century. After some searching, it was revealed that Maier was a career-nanny who had died in 2009.
Since the documentary is in serious contention for a best documentary feature Oscar, we thought we’d check to see how many other photography-related films have managed to resonate with the Academy’s documentary branch and land a nomination in the same category. We found six.

Adieu au langage - Goodbye to Language

Introduction
From its bluntly political opening (Alfredo Bandelli's 'La caccia alle streghe': "Always united we win, long live the revolution!") to its hilarious fecal humor and word play—with 3D staging that happily puts to shame James Cameron and every other hack who's tried their hand at it these past several years—Adieu au langage overwhelms us with a deluge of recited texts, music and images, hardly ever bothering to slow down to let us catch our breath. Exhilarating and certainly not surprising—this is the guy who made Puissance de la parole after all!
The release of a new Godard film or video means a new encounter with texts, films and music often familiar from the filmmaker's earlier work—reworked and re-contextualized—as well as new discoveries to be sorted through and identified. This life-long interest in quotation...

Fear in a Handful of Dust: Van Hees Completes Trilogy with Dark Metaphor
Belgian director Pieter Van Hees completes his trilogy that began with 2008’s Left Bank, the thematically connected “Anatomy of Love and Pain,” with the third chapter, Waste Land, exploring the idea of ‘soul’ with a neo-noir tinged mystery concerning the unraveling of a relationship and the loss of love. So named for T.S. Eliot’s famed 1922 poem, Van Hees has crafted a surreal nightmare that contains some profound mutations concerning historical atrocities from Europe’s colonialist past, of which Belgium also figured into. A director whose previous titles haven’t been able to tap into the offbeat English speaking audiences that are sure to embrace his bizarre flavor, the international renown of star Jeremie Renier should afford Van Hees’ latest work a higher visibility.
