Bay area hip-hop duo The Luniz can thank Jordan Peele’s “Us” for the 2019 reintroduction of their 1995 chart-topper “I Got 5 on It.” It’s become an instant horror anthem, earning new fans and serving as a nostalgia trip for older hip-hop heads. But the song (and the group) missed much earlier opportunities at a revival, as well as the licensing fees. Blake Leyh, music supervisor and composer for HBO’s “The Wire,” sought the track all the way back in 2002. But at the time, obtaining clearance was impossible because the writers and publishers couldn’t agree on how to distribute ownership.
“I don’t exactly recall my introduction to it, but I always just sort of knew of the song, because it was an international hit,” said Leyh. He tried to clear the track for episodes in seasons one, two and four of “The Wire,” to use as part of the landscape and ambient sound.

Sam Elliott is an incredible actor probably known best for his perfect mustache and his gravelly voice. And with those gifts, he’s gone on to star in some of the biggest and best films in history. This week, the world lost a legendary actor in Albert Finney. He might’ve already been an icon as the handsome, rugged face of the British New Wave of cinema, but he soon transformed into an actor who loved disappearing into roles, whether behind pounds of makeup or thick accents. And in doing so he found himself in everything from Oscar favorites to star-studded blockbusters to auteur-driven indies. Here we’ve compiled 15 of his greatest roles, and that might not even begin to scratch the surface.
“Saturday Night, Sunday Morning” (1960)
Finney’s breakout role in “Saturday Night, Sunday Morning” branded him as the first “Angry Young Man,” an archetype that would grow out of the rebellious ’60s and Britain’s rising lower class. From the film’s opening minutes, Finney looks like a British James Dean, and you can immediately sense his disdain at any sort of authority figure, giving...

Exclusive: Netflix has added Liza Chasin and her 3dot productions banner to its roster of first-look feature film producing deals. Chasin formed her production company early last year after ending a 26-year run as the Los Angeles head of prolific Working Title Films. Her producing credits include Baby Driver, The Theory of Everything and Les Miserables, and she exec produced the Gary Oldman-starrer Darkest Hour, Victoria & Abdul, Mary Queen of Scots, and the upcoming Netflix series Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City. Chasin’s first-look television deal is at Anonymous Content.
Scott Stuber, head of Netflix’s film group, grew up with Chasin when he was a top executive at Universal, where Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner have long had their first-look deal.

The streaming giant proved once again it is a force to be reckoned with at Oscar time, earning 15 nominations, up from last year’s eight nods, and charging toward the Feb. 24 ceremony armed with 10 noms for Alfonso Cuaron’s black and white Spanish-language feature Roma.
Box office in some form or fashion has always worked itself into the conversation to prop awards contenders in any given season. However, poor ticket sales can sometimes stall a contender’s chances early on its launch, particularly during the fall. While the streaming studio has provided limited theatrical releases for both Roma and the Coen Brothers’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (and have kept ticket sales unreported), Netflix has succeeded with art triumphing over commerce strategy this awards season. The Berlin Film Festival has announced Juliette Binoche will serve as the jury president for the main competition at the 2019 event. Berlinale will celebrate its 69th year in 2019. Binoche has a long history with the Berlin Film Festival, with films such as “The Night Is Young” screening in competition, and others like “The Lovers on the Bridge” playing such sidebars as the Forum section. The actress won the Berlinale Silver Bear for Best Actress, as well as an Oscar, for her role in Anthony Minghella’s “The English Patient” in 1997.
“It means the world to me!” Binoche said in a statement, calling the role of jury president a “tremendous honor.” “I’m looking forward to this special rendezvous with the entire jury and will embrace my task with joy and care.”

Lone Scherfig’s “The Kindness of Strangers” will open the 2019 Berlin Film Festival. It’s a familiar venue for the veteran filmmaker, who brought her eventual Oscar-nominated “An Education” to the Berlinale back in 2009.
Her most recent work stars Zoe Kazan and Tahar Rahim as two New Yorkers who help each other through a trying time against the backdrop of a Russian restaurant. The film’s ensemble also includes Andrea Riseborough, Bill Nighy, Jay Baruchel, and Caleb Landry Jones.
The film is Scherfig’s first in three years, after the Gemma Arterton-led WWII movie “Their Finest.” That film did not end up making a Berlin stop, but Scherfig had other titles play the festival, even before “An Education.” Her first feature “The Birthday Club” played as part of the 1990 festival, while her Maeve Binchy adaptation “Italian for Beginners” took home a Silver Bear jury prize a decade later.

On the occasion of it's 20th anniversary, Universal Pictures have released The Coen Brothers' classic The Big Lebowski on 4K Uhd for the first time. The disc made it to stores last month, but a bit of traveling on my part made it hard for me to get to it. Lebowski has a huge cult following, mostly amassed once it hit home video around the dawn of the DVD era, and has been given numerous disc releases over the years, but this new gift set definitely is the one to get for serious fans. The new Uhd release included in the set provides a great looking new Hdr presentation, without any additional bonus materials on the disc to compromise the image quality. Thankfully, all of...

While it appears that the buzz around Netflix’s Oscar chances this year seems to revolve around Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma,” there’s still a chance that the Coen Brothers’ latest film “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” makes some noise this awards season. Now, as the anthology Western film plays in theaters before its eventual Netflix streaming launch, the filmmaking siblings are talking about their choice to go to Netflix and why it appears that a TV project probably isn’t in the cards.

When dealing with an ensemble feature – in particular a collection of short stories structured into a feature film – there’s a whole host of talent involved, and in the case of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, the new film by the Coen brothers, well, that much is a given.
We were therefore happy to speak to pretty much anyone, but you can imagine our excitement when we were granted the opportunity to meet the eponymous sort-of-lead himself, played by Coen’s regular Tim Blake Nelson. He was paired with British actor Harry Melling, who starred in a seperate segment. We also chatted to Bill Heck and Zoe Kazan, who paired up in one of the best of the tales within this wonderful piece of cinema.
Blake Nelson begins by discussing how he was first made aware of this project back in 2002, and his continuing friendship and collaborations with the Coens.

As Netflix plots theatrical releases for its awards season fare such as Alfonso Cuaron’s upcoming Roma, and festivals like Cannes debate playing streaming movies, National Association of Theaters chief John Fithian said today, “The movie door is open to Netflix.”
Essentially if the streaming giant wants to take advantage of the exclusive theatrical window, they may do so. Currently, Netflix is planning qualifying theatrical week runs for Roma, The Coen Brothers’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and Paul Greengrass’ 22 July. While the buzz is that these pics will stream at the same time as their week theatrical run, they are not day and date theatrical releases rather limited to a 10-12 theater big city runs. Roma may get an extended run, but keeping a Dolby Atmos theater during Christmas remains the trick.

The Coen Brothers’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs takes feature form for the 2018 Venice Film Festival
In a surprise twist no one saw coming The Coen Brothers’ initial anthology series, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, will be featuring at the 2018 Venice Film Festival as a full-length feature in the competition.
The film, which was declared a Netflix original, is made up of 6 of chaptered stories revolving around the American Frontier. As for chapter plot details, information is hard to find. Tim Blake Nelson stars as Scruggs alongside a cast that features names like Zoe Kazan, Liam Neeson and Tom Waits.
“We’ve always loved anthology movies, especially those films made in Italy in the Sixties which set side-by-side the work of different directors on a common theme,” the Coens said in a statement. “Having written an anthology of Western stories we attempted to do the same, hoping to enlist the best directors working today. It was our great fortune that they both agreed to participate.”

I was pretty excited about The Coen Brothers Netflix anthology series The Ballad of Buster Scruggs! It was originally supposed to be a six-episode Western series, each one focusing on a different story. Now is being reported by Variety that the Coens have re-edited the series have re-edited the series into a feature film instead.
I was really looking forward to watching a six-episode Coen Brothers series! I'm kinda bummed out that's not happening. On the bright side of things, at least we are getting a new movie from the Coen Brothers!
When the project was first announced about a year ago it was described as being a "feature-length omnibus consisting of six separate stories." But, the original plan was for those stories to be split up over multiple episodes. Based on that initial description, I guess they just wanted to keep the option open for a potential single film,...

At the Sundance Producers’ Brunch fewer than two weeks ago, Amazon Studios went out of its way to say that—contrary to reports claiming that it was shifting away from independent film to focus on international tentpoles—the company was not, in fact, turning away from indie film at all. Independent cinema had been and would continue to be a major part of the distribution and growth plans for the fledgling studio, which won its first Oscar with its Sundance 2016 acquisition “Manchester by the Sea.” Amazon’s reassurance that business would remain as usual was nice to hear at the time, and elicited a round of enthusiastic applause from my fellow creative producers. But now that the dust has settled on Sundance 2018, here’s a fun fact:
MoviePass, a company that until now offered a membership card as its premiere product, bought more movies at Sundance than the two biggest streaming companies combined.
