Tick-tick-tick… NBC is taking 24‘s real-time gimmick and setting it in the eye of a hurricane.
The Peacock Network has ordered a pilot for an untitled medical drama (formerly known as Salvation) from former Law & Order: Svu showrunner Warren Leight and Oscar-winning writer Paul Haggis, TVLine has learned. In it, the doctors and nurses at an understaffed Brooklyn hospital have to cope with being the only trauma center open when a devastating hurricane hits during a holiday weekend. And it will all play out in real-time, in what NBC is calling an “extreme event” series.

Pedro Pascal, the Chilean actor who's made a name for himself on shows like Game Of Thrones, Narcos, and will be re-teaming with his The Adjustment Bureau co-star Matt Damon in the upcoming film The Great Wall, is joining the cast of Kingsman: The Golden Circle. As we began talking about editorial content we could publish to celebrate the release of Hail, Caesar!, the latest film from Joel and Ethan Coen, we realized that none of us had the same top five lists, and that it seems unusual for that to be the case. The Coens have had such a rich and varied career that it is impossible to pin them down to one style or one theme or one type of storytelling. Some people love their comedies. Some people love it when they get dark. Some people love the underdogs, the least-liked of their films. But what's clear is that every film they've made has its fans, and even their worst films are beloved by someone. There are few artists like the Coen Brothers, and we were delighted to get lists from each of our special guest contributors this time. The diversity of the replies...

Amazon Studios is moving forward with a new original series. The digital studio branch of the ecommerce giant has greenlit the drama series Trial, from executive producer David E. Kelley and starring actor Billy Bob Thornton.
Written by Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro (The Practice), Trial tells the story of a down-and-out lawyer seeking redemption. Thornton (who seems to be having a TV moment thanks to his great acting in Fargo) plays this lawyer who, as explained by Deadline, has one chance to obtain justice “in a legal system where truth has become a commodity, and the scales of justice have never been more heavily weighted toward the rich and powerful.” Directed by David Semel (Madam Secretary) Trial also stars William Hurt (Broadcast News), Maria Bello (Prisoners), Olivia Thirlby (Juno), and Molly Parker (House of Cards). Kelley and Shapiro will executive produce alongside Ross Fineman (Lights Out).

Chicago – For 25 years, Edward James Martin “Ted” Koppel anchored the popular ABC-tv news show, “Nightline.” Since leaving the show in 2005, he has held a variety of journalistic and on-air roles, and most recently has written a new book, “Lights Out: A Cyberattack, A Nation Unprepared, Surviving the Aftermath,” indicating that America’s electric grid infrastructure is vulnerable. He appeared at the Old Orchard Barnes & Noble in Skokie, Ill., to promote the book.
Koppel was born in England in 1940, after his parents fled Nazi Germany following the rise of Adolf Hitler, and emigrated to the U.S. when he was 13 years old. After college, he was hired by ABC Radio News in 1963, the youngest ever at that point. He was first on ABC-tv news in 1966 as a Vietnam War reporter, and thereafter had assignments for the network covering the Richard Nixon presidential campaign in 1972 and as U.S. State Department correspondent.

Rushes collects news, articles, images, videos and more for a weekly roundup of essential items from the world of film. The biggest news of the week for us is the online release of new films by two Notebook contributors: Gina Telaroli's Here's to the Future! and Kurt Walker's Hit 2 Pass, two fundamentally undefinable and wildly adventurous movies made and released independently. (The two filmmakers discussed their independence in a conversation published on the Notebook.) Both films will be be available to stream through November 22, 2015, and all proceeds they make on the release will go towards their future film projects. The full trailer for Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight has been released, above, and it looks like the man generally derided (unfairly, we must add) as a kind of adolescent film nerd has made a film that looks akin to Alain Resnais' late films—and we couldn't be happier.

Huace Pictures and Arclight Films is pushing ahead with its all-new action thriller Lights Out, and according to Variety, the studios have tapped none other than Brian De Palma to take the reins of the genre piece.
Acting as the director’s first foray behind the lens in almost three years, Lights Out bears semblance to Marvel’s Daredevil comic in some ways in that it orbits around a young and blind Chinese girl who inadvertently becomes embroiled in a clandestine assassination program. Granted, it’s not as though this protagonist actively indulges in vigilantism, but that mixture of urban crime and an inherently vulnerable lead character is certainly rich in potential.
Tailored to be a Chinese production from the ground up, Variety notes that casting is currently underway to find an A-list star to step into the shoes of our heroine. It’ll act as the first motion picture...

Brian De Palma's headed to China! I am hoping that 2016 is a year of celebration for De Palma. After all, Noah Baumbach's documentary "De Palma," which played to adoring festival audiences this year, will be getting a theatrical release next year, and now it appears that there's a chance we'll get an actual new film from the filmmaker, and I'm going to preemptively cross all of my fingers hoping that it's a return to form for him. While I thought his last film "Passion" was strikingly made in places, it's been almost twenty years since the last film he made that's actually a complete movie, and that was "Mission: Impossible," where he was a (very stylish) gun for hire. I think "Snake Eyes" has some fun stuff in it, and it's certainly a De Palma film, visually speaking. There are plenty of visual flourishes that remind us just...
