Well I certainly don't think 2011 will go down as one of the more memorable years in Oscar history; not only were the winners fairly predictable, but the ceremony itself seemed dull and uninspired. Despite an attempt to add a "youthful edge" to the Oscars this year, it was almost completely lacking in comedy, excitement or entertainment. Hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway seemed to be dreadfully unprepared and lacking material, leaving Franco to put up a facade of aloof detachment while Hathaway simply attempted to win everyone over with cuteness. The King's Speech went on to secure most of the major awards including Best Picture, Director, Actor and Original Screenplay, reinforcing the stuffy British Oscar stereotype. For the second time David Fincher was denied Best Director, but The Social Network did end up getting awards for Film Editing, Original Score and Adapted Screenplay. Natalie Portman still managed to snag Best Actress for Black Swan,...

The Oscars: an annual tribute to the excesses that have made Hollywood what it is, a glorified and overdone celebration of all things fantastic in film. Tonight the 83rd annual Academy Awards comes from the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, California, and will be hosted by the tandem of James Franco and Anne Hathaway. During its (roughly) three-hour-long telecast, 24 different winners will be announced as the year's best in all facets of film production.
A few front-runners have emerged come Oscar time this year. The King's Speech leads the pack with 12 nominations, followed by True Grit with 10. Inception and The Social Network also garnered eight nods apiece. The King's Speech is widely perceived to have the momentum leading into tonight's ceremony, believed by most to be a heavy favorite to win Best Picture, among other Oscars. Will another early favorite, such as The Social Network or Inception, regain its impetus and upset The King's Speech?...

Greetings, all! I've put together what I hope you will find to be a fun quiz. We're doing this the low-tech way. Leave your answers in the comments section, and I'll score them. (If a ludicrous number of people participate, I request that you be extremely patient.)
What's the prize? Your choice between an Oscar-winning DVD (title to be determined) or -- should you be in the La area anytime in the near future -- my treating you to one of the guided tours of the Kodak Theatre, home of the Oscars. (As many times as I've gone past Hollywood and Highland since living in Los Angeles, it would give me an excuse finally to check it out.) Of course, the real prize in these parts is bragging rights, isn't it?

You can know a lot about movies and still know very little about the Academy Awards. The Oscars are a specialized skill, sort of like scouting in baseball: you can be the best baseball mind on the planet, but if you can't predict who has the talent and drive to become a great player (or the desire to spend 250 days of the year on the road -- a trait that, admittedly, does not hold up in this analogy), that's not the job for you. I know a lot about baseball and movies, but I wouldn't be a great scout and there's a reason I don't run one of those Oscar all-the-time websites.
But making Oscar predictions is an essential part this job, like creating a top ten list at the end of the year or making fun of Rob Schneider movies. It's not that I don't enjoy it -- I...

Don't Say A Word, Baby, We're All Beautiful In Our Own Way: The 2011 Oscar Nominated Animated Shorts
Every year, we're lucky enough to get tons of quality animated feature films. It seems to be a yearly tradition to see which of the major studios can outtrump the others: Dreamworks, Disney, and Pixar, usually with an occasional foreign dark horse thrown in for good measure. Why we can afford to have ten best pictures -- one of which is an animated film -- and only three best animated feature nominees is beyond me, when visual effects has reached such a boon.
The Oscar nominated animated shorts seemed for focus more on the artistry rather than the story -- unlike last year's remarkable set of five which was crowned with the spectacular Logorama, which I actually watched again just because I loved it so much.
Of the five nominated films, two have basically no dialogue or narrative, two are based on children's books and are essentially read as such,...

Michael C here from Serious Film popping in to give everybody an edge in their Oscar pools. For most of us the shorts categories represent a vague, uncharted area on our Oscar ballots where the blind guesses required balance out the relatively easy calls in the bigger categories. Just pick whichever doc short seems to have the most Nazis and leave the rest up to chance.
But now that Magnolia Pictures and Shorts International have begun releasing all the nominated shorts in theaters and for purchase online there is no longer any excuse to stay in the dark. Not only do you get to enjoy some of the year's most inventive work, but you get the added suspense of following categories that have not been analyzed to death and had the novelty drained out of them by every precursor from the Golden Globes down to the Sheboygan Film Critics Society.

After seeing so few surprises at the Golden Globes this year, I wasn't expecting to see anything particularly different with this year's Oscar nominees. However, now that the full list of nominations has been announced, there are some pretty cool picks in among the more predictable choices. Some of my favourites include Jesse Eisenberg getting a nod for Best Actor in The Social Network, Hailee Steinfeld for Best Supporting Actress in True Grit, and John Hawkes for Best Supporting Actor for Winter's Bone. Even Exit through the Gift Shop and Gas Land managed to get nominated for Best Documentary. Overall, I'm not seeing many snubs or oversights except for maybe Christopher Nolan for Best Director, Inception for Best Editing, and Ryan Gosling for Best Actor (for Blue Valentine). The King's Speech is out in front with 12 nominations, followed by True Grit with 10. Are you satisfied with this year's Oscar nominees?...

I think everybody woke up at 8:30 eager for one thing today: using the bathroom. But After that, I'm sure they opened up their computers and checked out the Oscar nominations, right? So how well did we at Tmp do on our predictions? Any major upsets? Well, you can find out after the jump.
And we're after the jump! Here's the complete list of nominees:
Best Picture
Winter’s Bone
True Grit
Toy Story 3
The Social Network
127 Hours
The King’s Speech
The Kids Are All Right
Inception
The Fighter
Black Swan
Quick Commentary: Yup, no surprises here. In fact, we predicted all of these pretty much correct. Well, except The Town. But to be honest...it was only because I forgot about True Grit. What a glaring oversight, me. Come on! Still, super pleased Toy Story 3 got the nom it deserved.
Best Director
Joel and Ethan Coen,...

The nominees for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards have been announced. As expected, big players include The Social Network and The King's Speech, but there are very strong showings for The Kids Are All Right, The Fighter and True Grit. The Best Picture nominees are: Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The King's Speech, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, and Winter's Bone. If you're going by the numbers, The King's Speech is strong with 12, followed by a wonderful 10 for True Grit and then 8 for both The Social Network and Inception, with the latter scoring on technical nominations. The full list of nominees is after the break. While Inception did manage to squeeze into the Best Picture race, Christopher Nolan didn't get a Best Director slot. Glad that Javier Bardem got his nod for Biutiful, and that True Grit shows up as strong as it does.

Photo: AMPAS // RopeofSilicon.com The 2011 Oscar nominations were announced this morning and my predictions in the top categories ended up looking pretty good, but there is definitely a conversation to be had in a few areas. Take for example the snubbing of Christopher Nolan (Inception) for a Best Director nomination? The Michelle Williams gets a nomination for Blue Valentine but Ryan Gosling doesn't as Jeff Bridges gets in there for True Grit. Tron: Legacy doesn't get a visual effects nom and Inception doesn't get an editing nom? Black Swan also misses for screenplay and Leslie Manville (Another Year) doesn't get a nom.
As far as the films getting the most nominations, here's a breakdown at the top: The King's Speech - 12 nominations True Grit - 10 nominations The Social Network - 8 nominations Inception - 8 nominations The Fighter - 7 nominations 127 Hours - 6 nominations Toy Story 3 - 5 nominations Black Swan - 5 nominations...

Cartoon Brew has debuted the list of the thirty-three films up for consideration in the Best Animated Short category for the upcoming 2011 Oscars and I have done my very best to find a video for each and every one. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find anything for Rao Heidmets's Inherent Obligations or Don Hertzfeldt's Wisdom Teeth so if anyone out there can help find video for those either let me know in the comments or shoot me an email.
Otherwise, spend some time over the next three pages to preview some really cool videos. I had a chance to preview a few of them while putting this article together, but have yet to check them all out. So let me know which ones are your favorites and which ones don't really do it for you.
