It's Got Spunk. No Budget, but Spunk
Gislef15 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I don't get the hate. No, it's not as polished as the DC and Marvel movies. Heck, it's not as polished as the CW stuff. Obviously, most of the budget went into hiring Richards and Seymour, and the cast of actors who have minor roles in bigger stuff. Like Derek Mears, who's played a monster on stuff like 'Swamp Thing' and 'Sleepy Hollow'.

But I like the world building, and how the show dedicates most of the first episode to that in 21 minutes or so. It's not Watchman level-even Watchman the movie isn't Watchman the comic level-but you can tell the writers are interested in telling a superhero story. I just got through watching 'She-Hulk', and the show seemed more interested in She-Hulk as a metaphor then as a super-character. So 'Guardians' is like a palate-cleansing aperitif after that.

It's clear the production staff didn't have much of a budget to work with. I liked the combination of styles for the flashbacks this caused, with everything from video games to cartoons to Claymation.

Some of the characters could use work: Dallas Page seems more of a Christian Bale-clone than a Bruce Wayne type. And most of the characters are nothing we haven't seen before. But the idea of an impossible murder is solid. And the production staff has seven more episodes to play around with, and most of episode one was world building. So I'm willing to give it some time.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Art Degree Garbage

The style and tone is absolutely everywhere, reminds me of a 90's commercial.

It just falls flat with no substance at all, Netflix is really letting anyone dump out whatever they can.

But if you like constant low budget flashes that makes the orginal Superman TV run look like a modern show and constant noise to keep you awake, this is the show for you.

An Utter Waste of Your Time

This show, I thought it could be funny, you know - tongue in cheek - maybe something along the lines of "the boys" or something, with a Retro Edge.

Unfortuantly there is no Edge, it's trying way too hard to be retro - belive me I like retro stuff - I like the funny tongue in cheek type stuff like Peacemaker.. but wow - this is just shocking.

Honestly - they say Netflix will make a show about anything, it's true. What's funny is they wonder why they're bleeding customers, well it's content like this.

This show is more pain than pleasure, the acting, the "is it a comic/is it cgi?/ is it real video" edge just doesn't work either.

Don't waste your time - if you must "see what it's like in the long run" watch episode 1 as that's about the best it gets, I made 3 episodes before reviewing, thats over an hour of my life wasted.
