The contender to watch this week: “Uncropped”
A perfect companion piece to “The Freaks Came Out to Write,” Tricia Romano‘s new book about the history of The Village Voice, “Uncropped” profiles one of the iconoclastic newspaper’s signature photographers. James Hamilton captured the streets of New York, musicians like Patti Smith and the Beastie Boys, wartime conflicts in China and the Philippines, and production stills for the likes of Francis Ford Coppola and Wes Anderson. His juicy career is detailed in this unconventional documentary directed by D.W. Young (“The Booksellers”), who stages a handful of intimate conversations between Hamilton and his collaborators, including Anderson and Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore. Following a limited theatrical release in April, “Uncropped” is available on VOD.

New to Streaming: La Chimera, Let It Be, The Last Stop in Yuma County, Kim’s Video, The Dry 2 & More
Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
La Chimera (Alice Rohrwacher)
While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny perhaps garnered more press out of Cannes, another selection involving archaeologists and tomb raiders will have a longer shelf life. Alice Rohrwacher’s latest feature La Chimera ranked quite highly on our top 50 films of 2023 list for good reason. It’s a dreamy, magical odyssey in which the Italian director whisks viewers away with the kind of transportive vision she’s exuded in all her features thus far.
Where to Stream: VOD
Eileen (William Oldroyd)
Considering how many jokesters online talk about supporting women’s wrongs, Eileen should have made a billion dollars. Alas, not everyone can have impeccable taste. William Oldroyd’s character study grabs you from the first scene,...

The Bear season 3 will return to our screens on the 27th June with all episodes dropping at once. More on the third season below.
The Bear, Christopher Storer’s popular kitchen drama, has had us shouting “Yes, chef! and “Behind!” since its first season debuted in 2022. Starring Jeremy Allen White, the series follows his fine dining chef Carmy who returns to Chicago to run his late brother’s sandwich shop which has now been transformed into the titular restaurant.
We now have confirmation that the highly anticipated season 3 will debut on Disney+ in the UK and on Hulu in the US on the 27th June. All 10 episodes will drop at once, for your binge watching pleasure.
We also got a tiny little sneak peek at the new season, which sees Carmy returning to the kitchen. The third season will deal with the fallout of the somewhat, shall we say, eventful opening of The Bear.

Fresh off of their acclaimed turns in Hulu’s Pam & Tommy limited series comes news that the stars, Lily James and Sebastian Stan, will be reteaming. And this time, they can ditch the fake tats, bathing suits and chest pieces (one would assume), with them leading the horror flick Let the Evil Go West.
The movie is being directed by Christian Tafdrup, whose movie Speak No Evil has an American remake coming out this fall.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Let the Evil Go West follows a railroad worker who stumbles upon a fortune under deeply disturbing circumstances. As horrifying visions and manifestations drive him toward madness, his wife becomes convinced that an evil presence has attached itself to their family.
Sounds pretty cool, right? Sebastian Stan is no stranger to the genre, having starred in the well-received Hulu horror flick Fresh. Lily James also has experience with the genre,...

“Pam & Tommy” stars Sebastian Stan and Lily James will reunite to star in psychological horror thriller “Let the Evil Go West.”
The film sounds very different from Stan and James’ previous collaboration, which saw them playing Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson in a Hulu mini-series. In “Let the Evil Go West,” a railroad worker stumbles upon a fortune under deeply disturbing circumstances. As horrifying visions and manifestations drive him toward madness, his wife becomes convinced that an evil presence has attached itself to their family.
Christian Tafdrup is set to direct from a screenplay by Xc Vs. The film is produced by Tim and Trevor White (“King Richard”) under their Star Thrower Entertainment banner, Mark Fasano and Nathan Klingher for Gramercy Park Media, which is also financing the film, and Allan Mandelbaum. Stan and James will also executive produce along with Gramercy Park’s Joshua Harris and Ford Corbett and north.five.six.

For the last 10 years, A24 has been home to movies that wouldn’t have been made anywhere else, as low and mid-budget films are almost obsolete in the mainstream Hollywood landscape. But following their commitment to funding risky visions of outsider filmmakers, the Indie outfit has built a pretty strong brand identity and is now set to join forces with one of the best in the game.
Steven Spielberg, who previously spoke highly of A24’s Oscar-nominated The Zone of Interest, is now teaming up with the indie distributor for an adaptation of The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Zac Efron is mixing up his look with some new facial hair!
The 36-year-old The Iron Claw actor stepped out in Los Angeles on Saturday (April 27) rocking a fresh mustache.
He casually debuted the new look while arriving at the Chateau Marmont Hotel. Zac was dressed casually in a hoodie, and he carried a bag and a hat while exiting the car.
Keep reading to find out more…
While his hood was up, you could make out that his face was otherwise clean-shaved.
Zac was rocking some all-over scruff a few weeks ago when he attended the 2024 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Australia. He was spotted hanging out with another famous actor at the race.
Speaking of Zac, you might be interested to know that he was reportedly in talks to land two different roles in a forthcoming movie.
Earlier this year, Zac weighed in on wrestling nearly naked in The Iron Claw.

An intriguing creative duo are in line to collaborate on The Seven Five, a crime drama that could mark Ben Stiller’s return to film directing.
According to Jeff Sneider (via World Of Reel), Ben Stiller has signed up to helm The Seven Five, a crime drama that will be ‘set in the 1980s in New York City. The story’s about a corrupt police precinct and its ringleader, Michael Dowd, who was arrested in 1987 with a handful of other dirty cops who stole money and drugs. He served 14 years in prison, and his arrest exposed widespread corruption within the NYPD.’
It sounds intriguing, right? Add to this the talents of The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White in the lead role and you could have something special. Allen White was exceptional in last year’s The Iron Claw and his work in TV’s The Bear is no less remarkable.

From the kitchen to corruption, The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White is now being eyed for The Seven Five, a movie based on the 2014 documentary of the same name to be directed by Ben Stiller.
While the role that White is apparently circling for The Seven Five has yet to be revealed, it was reported back in 2020 that the likes of Nicholas Hoult and Aaron Taylor-Johnson were linked to play Michael Dowd, who was considered the “ringleader” of a net of corruption that ran through the New York City police department in the 1980s. One could assume that neither of these casting decisions worked out or that White could be in talks for the role of Patrick Eugene McKenna, another key player in the NYPD.
Regardless of Jeremy Allen White’s role at this time, this isn’t the first attempt to get the documentary turned into a narrative. An...

It still feels disappointing how Zac Efron’s sports thriller film The Iron Claw took home zero nominations at this year’s Oscar Awards. Highly praised by critics and well-received by fans, the movie had everything to make it to the prestigious event. Unfortunately, it only had the Oscar buzz.
The Iron Claw
Portraying Kevin Von Erich, Efron does not really feel affected by the result of the Oscars, and neither does the movie’s director. Both of them are grateful for the opportunity, and the audience’s positive reception was their main prize.

Speaking with GamesRadar+, director Sean Durkin addressed The Iron Claw’s Oscar snub, particularly receiving zero nominations despite it being critically acclaimed and commercially successful.

Max announced on Friday that the acclaimed wrestling drama The Iron Claw from Cannes and Sundance prize-winning filmmaker Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene) will begin streaming exclusively on the platform through its output deal with distributor A24 on May 10.
Based on a true story, The Iron Claw follows the rise and fall of the Von Erich family, a dynasty of wrestlers who made a huge impact on the sport from the 1960s to the present day. The film specifically hones in on the supposed “Von Erich curse,” which would see one Von Erich brother after another meet their untimely end, leaving just Kevin Von Erich (Zac Efron) left.
Written and directed by Durkin, the film also stars Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Holt McCallany, Maura Tierney and Lily James, among others. A24 financed the pic alongside Access Entertainment and BBC Films. In addition to A24, producers included Tessa Ross,...

The iconic screenwriter of Taxi Driver, Paul Schrader, once said, “Every time I thought that I might die, I would get a new idea.” Now, although the 81-year-old auteur, Martin Scorsese is very far from the final event, the legendary director and Leonardo DiCaprio collaborator has quipped once or twice his fear of not having much time left to do all of the things he wants to do. Perhaps that very thought has led to Scorsese picking up his pace on two projects of astounding weight and value – Jesus Christ and Frank Sinatra.

Get your tissues ready: “The Iron Claw” will be available to stream on Max on May 10.
The A24 biographical sports drama debuted in theaters on Dec. 22 and received critical acclaim. Starring Zac Efron, Sean Durkin’s latest feature is based on the Von Erich wrestling dynasty, who suffered a series of tragic deaths in the family. Efron plays Kevin Von Erich, alongside Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich, Stanley Simons as Mike Von Erich and Holt McCallany as patriarch Fritz Von Erich. Lily James plays Kevin’s wife Pam Adkisson and Maura Tierney plays matriarch Doris Von Erich.
Efron famously packed on pounds of muscle to portray the professional wrestler. “That necessity to be perfect — it became an obsession,” he told Variety for his December cover story. “It was a singular focus for months. And your life goes out the window during prep.

Exclusive: Industry star Myha’la has joined Lily James in 20th Century’s upcoming movie inspired by the story of Whitney Wolfe Herd, the founder of Bumble and co-founder of Tinder.
We understand filming is due to get underway in LA early next month.
20th Century Studios and Ethea Entertainment, the production company formed by Jennifer Gibgot and Andrew Panay, are behind the project, which has James in the lead role.
After co-founding Tinder, Wolfe Herd left the dating app in 2014. She went on to launch competitor Bumble that same year. In 2021, the company went public and she officially became one of the youngest self-made billionaires at age 31. She would step down as CEO in 2023 but by then the app had become a huge success with several divisions that are still thriving today.
Plot details are still relatively under wraps as the film is an inspiration and not based on Wolfe...

Alex Garland’s dystopian Civil War, about America torn asunder by a president run amok and brutal acts of war committed on ordinary citizens, sparked plenty of speculation — and assumptions — heading into its debut in theaters over the April 12-14 weekend.
Would it be a win in blue states but a losing battle in red states? Would it galvanize those Trumpians eager to view the sort of imagery witnessed during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capital? Or would liberals assume it would be a balm for their point of view, and see them turn out in full force? After all, Hollywood isn’t known for being a bastion of Republicans. Ditto for indie studio A24, which produced the film.

“Kung Fu Panda 4” (Universal) debuted on PVOD to #1 April 9, which it has enjoyed for a week; that will end with “Dune: Part 2” (Warner Bros.), which debuts today after 46 days in release.
Both films still are in the box office Top 10. “Panda” actually rose one position to #4 this weekend, with its 29 percent drop the lowest of any holdover on the list. It still has a shot at a $200 million domestic gross. “Dune 2,” which was #5 this weekend and will get close to $300 million, will likely minimize the impact of parallel home availability given its essential visual presentation.
Based on presales, “Dune 2” is already #6 on iTunes top 10 list (ranked by transactions). Other platforms stick to currently available titles, but it would be surprising if it’s not immediately #1 on both iTunes and Fandango.

The Iron Claw was unarguably one of the best films from 2023, garnering massive critical commendation in both its reviews and box office earnings. In fact, people even called the movie Zac Efron’s career’s best performance, because it most certainly was. Despite that, the masterpiece was brutally snubbed at the Academy Awards 2024, not even scoring a single nomination.
The Iron Claw (2023).
Needless to mention, this brought about a lot of rage from fans and viewers who were absolutely in love with the epic performance Efron delivered in the movie. And now, it seems like the fan-favorite Formula One race car driver Lewis Hamilton has also joined that league, considering how he expressed the 2023 masterpiece deserved to be treated with a lot more recognition than that.

Hollywood has been obsessed with biopics for what seems like forever, but it's hard not to admit that our current film landscape is reaching critical mass with movies about famous people. I guess when they've run out of recognizable IP, they've gotta center stories about recognizable faces instead. Last year alone we saw "Maestro," "The Iron Claw," "Napoleon," "Ferrari," "Nyad," "Priscilla," and "Big George Forman," not to mention brand movies like "Blackberry," "Tetris," "Air," and "Barbie." And then, of course, there's "Oppenheimer," which not only took home seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, but also became the highest-grossing biopic of all time. No shade to our boy Oppy, but it seems like a new film from Antoine Fuqua is coming for that title and the fact it's a movie about the most famous musical performer to ever live certainly gives the project a leg up on the father of the atomic bomb.

To understand why is the industry so conflicted over how to release movies, check out the contradictory paths of two Amazon films, “The Beekeeper” and “Road House.”
The first, which stars Jason Statham as a righteous avenger, is a $40 million production acquired by Amazon MGM for the US. It grossed $66 million in its domestic theatrical release and went on to become a hit as a $19.99 PVOD. Currently, it’s $5.99 to rent and is #1 at iTunes (which ranks by transactions) as well as Fandango (which tracks by revenue).
That’s nearly unheard of at Fandango, which sometimes see its entire top 10 comprised of $19.99 titles. It is also unusual for a mid-level success like “The Beekeeper” to be so dominant on VOD.
Meantime, “Road House” skipped theaters and leads Reelgood’s list of most-streamed movies for the week ending last Wednesday.
At Netflix, another random theatrical release dominates its most-watched movie chart.

Payman Maadi brings a fierce intelligence to his portrayal of a refugee seeking a secure new home for his family in Sweden
Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher from 2015 and Sean Durkin’s recent The Iron Claw show the sport of wrestling as deeply dysfunctional; wrestling fans might wonder if their favourite pastime is ever going to be depicted in the movies as vital and dramatic, like football, or even tragically noble and masculine, like boxing. Well … not in this film.
Motståndaran, or Opponent, is a tense, complex drama from Iranian-born and Denmark-based director Milad Alami, drawing on some of his own experiences as a refugee in northern Sweden. Payman Maadi (from Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation) plays Imam, a grizzled Iranian wrestling champ seeking asylum in Sweden with his pregnant wife Maryam (Marall Nasiri) and their two young daughters. What the movie-streaming public wants depends on which top 10 chart you prefer. This week offered little consistency and some outright contradictions.
One thing is clear: Jake Gyllenhaal’s straight-to-streaming “Road House” remake is a massive hit. Amazon Prime reported over 50 million worldwide viewers through its second streaming weekend and gateway app Reelgood reported it as the week’s #1 movie for March 21-27 in the U.S.
“The Accountant,” a 2016 Warner Bros. drama starring Ben Affleck, is currently #1 at Netflix. On Easter weekend “The Passion of the Christ” led VOD at iTunes, while the just-released $19.99 “Imaginary” (Lionsgate) topped Fandango’s revenue-calculated list. (It was #20 at iTunes.) For a second week, Google Play did not update its list.
“Ordinary Angels” (also Lionsgate) is #2 at Fandango, but #14 at iTunes. Since Fandango calculates by revenue, that list favors PVODs — but this week, six of its top 10 rented for $5.99 or less; “The Passion of the Christ,...

From The Beef to The Boss – Jeremy Allen White might be stepping into the shoes of one of music’s all-time-greats. In recent years, the actor has received considerable acclaim for his central role in The Bear, following it up with wrestling hit The Iron Claw, and a Calvin Klein campaign that sent the internet into meltdown. And while The Bear is back in production on Season 3, White may next be set to play none other than Bruce Springsteen.
Reports indicate that White is in talks for the role in Deliver Me From Nowhere – not a full-on Bruce biopic, but a film specifically zoning in on the creation of his 1982 album Nebraska. Released as Springsteen’s fame was rocketing – it landed between smash double-album The River, and hit-packed behemoth Born In The USA – Nebraska was a total change of pace for the musician, a stripped-down acoustic album recorded on 4-track,...

Jeremy Allen White is looking to start dancing in the dark, as the Emmy-winning actor is eyeing the starring role of Bruce Springsteen in a feature biopic.
White is in talks to play the rock superstar in Deliver Me From Nowhere, which also has A24 circling. Based on Warren Zanes’ 2023 book of the same name, the movie is set to focus on the making of Springsteen’s 1982 album, Nebraska.
Scott Cooper is adapting the script with plans to direct. Gotham Group is behind the project, which counts Eric Robinson and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein as producers. Former Netflix film head Scott Stuber is also involved in the screen version of Deliver Me From Nowhere.
Springsteen is a music icon known as “The Boss” and continues to draw rapt audiences with his legendary live performances. Nebraska was Springsteen’s sixth studio album and released two years before his smash Born in the U.

Talk about Boss. A biopic about the life of Bruce Springsteen is in its early stages, IndieWire has learned, and it seems like some big names are already racing in the street to be involved.
Here’s what we know for sure: The project is being put together by lead producers Eric Robinson and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein of The Gotham Group, and they’ve got Springsteen and his manager producer Jon Landau involved in its development.
They’ve also brought Scott Stuber aboard as a producer, making the Bruce film his first project as a producer since he announced his exit as Netflix’s longtime film chief.
Beyond that, details are still being worked out and deals still need to be put in place. But another source says A24’s involvement is in talks stage. Scott Cooper, the “Crazy Heart” filmmaker, is also in talks to write the script and would direct.

Jeremy Allen White is looking to go from “The Bear” to the Boss, as the actor is in talks to play Bruce Springsteen in an upcoming narrative feature about the making of his 1982 album “Nebraska,” Variety has confirmed.
No deals have been finalized, but Scott Cooper is circling to write and direct the movie, titled “Deliver Me From Nowhere,” which hails from Eric Robinson and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein of the Gotham Group. A24 is also in talks to board the project. Scott Stuber, in his first major film project since leaving his post as head of film at Netflix, has joined as a producer.
The film is an adaptation of Warren Zanes’ 2023 book “Deliver Me From Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska.” It will follow Springsteen and the journey of making his sixth studio album, a dark, stripped-down collection of songs that marked a new artistic direction from the “Born to Run” rocker.

Two new biopics about 20th-century Black icons entered the home viewing charts this week: “Bob Marley: One Love” (Paramount), the film about the legendary reggae artist nearing $100 million in theaters, and “Shirley” (Netflix), about the first Black Congresswoman and one-time presidential candidate, led newcomers in a week that mostly repeated top titles.
“One Love” is #1 at Fandango, which ranks by revenue. The VOD platform won’t be able to provide its whole top 10 until Monday, but the company confirms that placement. Somewhat surprisingly, “One Love” is #3 at iTunes, behind “Anyone but You” (Sony) and “The Beekeeper” (Lionsgate), now both at $5.99 to rent after earlier strong PVOD performances at $19.99.
Both Fandango and Google Play chart by transactions. But normally a film with the success in theaters that “Bob Marley” had would debut at #1. It’s unclear, with data beyond relative rankings absent, whether this might be just because the reduced price...

Exclusive: As she continues to build out her development slate when it comes to both acting and producing, Lily James looks to have found quite the high-profile pic to add to its dance card.
Sources tell Deadline that 20th Century Studios and Ethea Entertainment, the production company formed by Jennifer Gibgot and Andrew Panay, are in pre-production for an untitled film inspired by the story of Whitney Wolfe Herd, the founder and former CEO of online dating platform Bumble, with James on board to play the lead role. The film will begin shooting in 2024, with James set to produce alongside 20th Century and Ethea.
20th Century had no comment.
Lily James will produce alongside producer duo Jennifer Gibgot and Andrew Panay. Rachel Lee Goldenberg is directing the film from a script written by herself, Bill Parker and Kim Caramele. The project will include Gala Gordon as an Executive Producer, and...

Oscar-winning films were denied a theatrical victory lap, grossing less than $1 million total last weekend. They found gold at home, where titles like “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” ranked high on both VOD and on streaming.
Two $19.99 PVOD titles lead the VOD charts. “Anyone but You” (Sony) remains #1 at iTunes and Google, while the just-released “Madame Web” is #1 at Fandango. “Anyone” is #5 at Fandango, while “Madame Web,” released last Friday, has yet to be listed at Google Play, which always lags a few days.
Oscar titles otherwise dominated. Five films, all with rentals between $4.99 and $6.99 (and all but one also streaming), took 12 of 30 positions on three VOD charts. “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” (Searchlight) swept the field.
On two charts were winners “American Fiction” (Amazon MGM), “Anatomy of a Fall” (Neon), and “The Zone of Interest” (A24). “The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), still at $19.99, and “Wonka” (WB), now reduced to $5.99, round out the...

Over the past decade, Lily James has distinguished herself by building one of the most varied resumes as any film actor her age. After getting her start on British television, James first became known to American audiences in 2012 when she joined the cast of “Downton Abbey” as the love-struck Lady Rose MacClare, a role that earned James two Screen Actors Guild Awards as a member of the show’s ensemble cast.
The actress quickly followed up that television triumph with one on the big screen in the title role of Disney’s live-action “Cinderella,” directed by Kenneth Branagh, which clearly proved her appeal to audiences of all ages. One of the most reliable screen presences in recent years, James showed enormous range in choosing her projects, from such crowd pleasers as “Baby Driver” and “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” to more intimate films as “The Dig” and “Little Woods,...
