Gain hope or lose hope?
hp1993-739-94778524 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
After the great episode comes another one!

The story was reunited to be divided into parallels again - Cas meets Metatron who wants to shut the gates of Heaven to restore peace up there. He wants to protect people from the Angel-war and Cas is chosen to do the trials. Sam and Dean try to find out the way how to cure a demon. They found a movie which contains "odd exorcism". After that they understand they've found a possible way how to complete the third task. They want to practice that - Abaddon could be used for that. But they are interrupted - Crowley wants desperately Kevin, tablets and wants to stop Sam and Dean from the Closing-Hell-Mission. To do that he kills the "survivors" of the solved cases of Sam and Dean.

What I think is that in this episode Crowley really shows how evil he is. Abaddon is also back - her moment is a bit funny (the hand-thing) but more disturbing in fact. We are informed it was her who'd killed father Thompson and we see her reaction on the news that Crowley is now the King of Hell.

Another positive thing is the way that Sam and Dean react on Crowleys threats. They want to save people and hunt the things as Crowley says and that brings us to the very beginning of the show, not speaking about the murders of the "living"ones - the flashbacks are great. Crowley's speech is very drama-like, kind of Shakespeare monologue I'd say and it fits his character so much!

Also the idea of watching the movie, showing us the cases of father Thompson- that was brilliant! (the first one very horror-like, the second one with cured demon full of hope!)

It's the good way how to introduce the final, although I think that the Castiel-closing-Heaven-storyline is a bit rushed and I'd appreciate if there was more space for it (some of the previous episodes weren't so important - like Freaks and Geeks...I have the impression that it stole the space that could've been used for this storyline maybe...) - but no matter, this episode continues with the high level and I'm thrilled for the final!

Build up for the final episode.
mm-3913 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
There are three story lines for the season finale. Crowley is killing off all the people the Winchester brothers have saved until Sam and Dean give up the quest of closing down hell. Sam and Dean will not give into Crowely's terrorism and will continue with the mission. Castiel is going on his own mission in heaven. Will Castiel cause more problems with his mission? All three stories are churning into the one big story for the eight season's climax. A good segue episode for the season finale. We Sam continue to deteriorate until the three trial done? Will the third trial end up killing Sam? I give Clip Show an eight out of Ten. Clip show must be a pun for the movie Creep Show.

Wonderful atmospherics but Cas-Metatron is a bit stiff
CubsandCulture10 September 2020
The curing the demon scenes are fairly stylish. The Abaddon sequence is quite unnerving. And there's some wonderful Crowley dueling with the brothers in this episode. It would be a classic if Cas wasn't too fast to trust Metatron. Likewise, Metatron being an antagonist is stiffly developed in this episode and it is a shame that the script wasn't made a little richer in that regard.

Cas is so dumb
danajs244 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously. I'm sick of Cas being made a puppet by everyone and everything. If there are angels in reality, I pray they aren't all as easily manipulated as Cas is. Could the writers not come up with another way to extend the story? Cas has done so much more harm than good in this show it's silly. Dean is treating Cas even better than he deserves. Cas needs to be in that cage that Bobby used to have and just left there. I can't imagine what he's gonna do to heaven when he finishes his trials, but I know it's going to be annoying for at least half a season. Anyways, the demon curing is pretty cool, but I can't believe Sam and Dean would be dumb enough to try and "cure" Abbadon. Duh she's going to escape. She can do so much more than regular demons can that the Winchesters know they don't know. Also, that bullet was way deeper in her skull I'm imagining, not on the roof of her mouth.

The Three Stooges
Johnny_West2 September 2023
Who is dumber? Castiel who has lived thousands of years and apparently learned nothing and has no wisdom or smarts? Sam who is permanently submissive to whatever Dean tells him to do? Dean who thinks he knows everything and is frequently outsmarted by villains, demons, monsters, Crowley, etc.?

In this episode, the dumbo brothers have to cure a demon to complete the third trial so they can seal the gates of hell. Instead of using a common lower power demon, they decide to unearth Abaddon, one of the Knights of Satan, and sew her head back onto her body. Does it makes sense to try and cure a powerful Knight of Satan instead of a random street demon? It does if your Sam & Dean!

Of course, while they are talking and arguing about what to do with Abaddon as she sits there planning to escape, Crowley calls, so the insipid morons decide they need to leave Abaddon alone so they can have private talk with Crowley. Needless to say, Abaddon escapes. Now the dorks have another powerful enemy on the loose thanks to their sheer stupidity.

As a subplot, the sub-moronic Castiel is getting manipulated by Metatron (Curtis Armstrong a/k/a Booger from The Revenge of the Nerds movies) into doing some killing. At this point, Castiel has reached such a low that any random character uses him to commit murder. I feel sorry for the character, and wonder why this show had so much awful writing?

Really bad writing
degothia7 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is an example of really bad script writing.

How is it possible, in the closing episodes of season 8, that the guys are as stupid as in season 1?

They have a demon dungeon, with restraints and a large demon trap, yet they take Abadon to some warehouse without restraining her and placing her hands next to her. They are trusting the bullet 100%. They havent even locked her down with an extarnal trap.

Then they decide to leave the room to take a phone call. Its laughable.

Its mindblowingly dumb!

One of the least likeable/enjoyable episodes of the entire series
hearsz1 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, hear me out.

I'm basing my review and score after finding out what happens to Crowley later on in the series.

So there are some SPOILERS here if you haven't seen the show beyond this episode.

First off, the idea that Crowley would go after characters that Sam and Dean had saved previously is a great idea.

It's a way to bait the brothers into doing his bidding, and is completely in character for the King of Hell.

But as much as like the fact that they brought Sarah (Taylor Cole and other previous characters back for this), after one of the most memorable episodes from Season 1, I really don't understand why the writers felt the need to completely kill her off.

Yes, we know that Crowley is evil and at times he has to show he has the upper hand over the Winchesters.

But knowing how his story unfolds in a later season, makes this episode feel very hollow. An even more hollow feeling than I had after seeing Sarah die.

Between this episode and Crowley's death, there's no revenge from the brothers for this horrible act: Crowley killing Sam's first love interest after losing Jessica.

They never get close to hurting Crowley in the way that he hurt Sam.

It also makes it seem like Sam is the one being punished but what about Sarah's husband, and her kids?

Sure, plenty of innocent people have died across the series, but for me this felt a step too far simply because Crowley doesn't get his comeuppance due to this incredibly cruel ending for Sarah.
