An Epic Sendoff
hannag-pham23 February 2014
This episode has everything that made me love Community in the first place, the perfect formula silly and funny premise, yet still has heartfelt moments. Geothermal Escapism is like A Fistfull of Paintballs in the sense that it has the essence of en epic adventure.

Even though, I still can't believe that Troy is leaving his last words with his friends, nearly brought tears to my eyes, especially when he said goodbye to Abed.

I am so glad that Dan Harmon is back for Season 5, without him the send off would be a hit and miss. So far this season, I have not been disappointed, yet this is the best episode of Season 5 so far.

Im not overly emotional, but this episode got me
Moviedude9016 January 2020
I think because it was so easy to relate in so many ways in how we all feel about life and change-we know we can get through it, but we also now to do so sometimes means we change into a different version of ourselves, or a clone. It isn't the big life-changing events that scare us, It's how we permanently change in response to those events that we all know can be scary to the core.

This show makes me appreciate other people's experience with greater empathy, and while laughing most of the time.

Tearful, but awesome send off!!
alvizurezj4 May 2020
This episode, (besides the finally of course), really hits you in the feels. The send of for Troy is amazing, unique, and sad all at the same time. This episode really mirrors how Troy and Abeds friendship blossoms throughout the series, you get invested in it as much as they do, and by the bittersweet end, it leaves you in tears. Of course, there is the signature awesome story community is known for as well! This show is true comedic genius.

Bittersweet farewell
sharky_5514 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
As the fifth of an agonisingly short 13 episode season, I was a bit wary of the concept episode theme that kickstarted the last of Troy's Community adventures. While the concept episodes are amongst the favourites of Community fans, overdoing them can derail the show's plot lines into senseless fanservice and jokes for the sake of them (looking at you season 4). Nevertheless, Geothermal Escapism was always going to be fondly remembered for the departure of Troy.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the lava game at the start. Channelling the aura of the past paintball and pillow/blanket shenanigans, the whole school get together for a contest, which like the ones before, is saturated with dark tones and action music for a dramatic effect. It's Harmon doing what he does best, but nevertheless it felt more cramped than the sweeping two part epic of the second paintball war and the pillow/blanket conflict. The action takes place across maybe three different locations, which slightly undercut the concept of the contest, though I suspect this was to focus more on the study group than the other students.

This episode was mainly about Troy and Abed's final appearance, so I admit that several of the main cast would be pushed aside. After Jeff's lawyer arc, it makes sense for him to take a sidestep. It was disappointing for Shirley to drop into what has been Pierce's default role since about season 3, the left out character. She similarly plays the role of the outsider as the fort-owner in the Lava Game, much like Pierce in A Fistful of Paintballs, but without the group conflict which pushed Pierce to his spectacularly season 2 exit, Shirley was forgotten here.

It was a great Britta episode, which has been few and far between. The flanderisation of Britta into a dumb hippie since the coining of the Britta'd phrase has always been a wrong move by the show, but here we saw glimpses of her old self. One of the things I love about season 5 is the toning down of her dumb moments. She seems more sensible and caring than before. The banter between her and Jeff takes me way back to the season 1, where Britta was actually an intellectual match for Jeff and not a running joke.

Which brings us to her role in 'cloning' Troy, in an effort to help Abed cope with his departure. At first glance, it seemed to avoid the emotional moment that Abed would've had if he really came to terms that Troy was leaving. It seems easy to invent some mechanism or loophole which allows Abed to believe what he wants in his own world. But at another glance, it perfectly encapsulates what Abed is all about. Abed views the world differently with his own lens, with his love of television and film, and it allows him to make his own behind the scenes of his real life. In a way, his coping mechanism creates a story behind Troy leaving instead of what Britta wants them to admit: sometimes people leave, things happen. And Britta helping Abed create this story, even if she herself would be normally against it, was a perfect moment of characterisation.

What was even more heartfelt was Troy's final goodbyes. "You're the best, and I love you" wrapped up a very good episode for Britta, while Annie was her usual bubbly self. I was disappointed that Jeff and Troy didn't hug, and Shirley really highlighted that her and Troy never really got story lines with each other, which is disappointing. But the best moment was the homing pigeon line, a "compulsion to come back" and the Troy and Abed hug afterwards. Danny Pudi is such a fantastic actor and he portrayed an emotional Abed to the tee. And then Come Sail Away came on, taking us all the way back to when Troy let slip that he cries whenever he hears this song. What a way to go out, and everyone who has been with Community from the beginning will sorely miss you, Troy Barnes.

My favourite Troy moments, from all the years:

  • "We're trying to get Jeff ready for the fiiiiii...ght."

  • "Something to do with crabs...they're like a food but they're also a disease.."

  • "Dead leaves...pumpkins everywhere...nature's Viagra."

  • "My emotions! My emotions!!"

  • "You are the opposite of Batman!"

  • "Yes I can, it's all terrain dummy!"

Just another solid community episode
man-9364713 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I started watching community less than a month ago for the first time ever and I am insanely glad I have, this show really feels like something special its able to mix in humour with some real touching character moments.

This episode is a perfect example of that, being the episode in which Troy leaves it has to address the connection that he and Abed share and how Abed is going to have to deal with it.

Having Abed set up a game in which he wants to keep playing forever so that Troy never has to leave really hit me and the fact that they both understood and grew as a result of the game affected me more than I expected.

Similarly this was a good episode for Britta, showing that she gets what her friends need at the end of the day with assisting in cloning Abed.

I'm not sure really, just everything about this works for me and I ended the episode in tears because it worked insanely well and the connection i felt to the characters really elevated everything.

One of only 2 episodes of community that still make me cry on every rewatch
partynetz15 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
When I first watched this episode, I thought it was a neat send off for Troy. But rewatching it I got all the character nuance, and the emotion just overwhelmed me at the end of the episode, as Come Sail Away by Styx plays in the background. One of Troy's funniest and most memorable line's is referenced in such a way that it made me cry. Rewatching this episode after the rest of season 5 and 6, It made me realise that after this, Community wasn't the same anymore. Abed was just left as that guy who made reference humor. Sure there were amazing episodes such as MeowMeowBeanz, G.I Jeff, DnD 2, modern espionage, Garett's wedding and of course the finale, but it never felt the same without Troy. And this episode was the perfect send off for him.

This is the best of the Abed and Troy duo. Really satisfying send off for Troy and although after this episode many didn't see the show the same way. Although I can agree, I do think that this episode set the ground works for some great future episodes.

Best episode of Community
notastrawhat15 May 2020
"Geothermal Escapism" takes the action of the fan-favorite "Modern Warfare" and the emotion of episodes like "Pascal's Triangle: Revealed", also a fan-favorite, to create an awesome an emotional sendoff to Donald Glover's Troy. You can tell that, unlike Chevy Chase, Glover loved the show like the fans and was gracious enough to be in the the first five episodes of Season 5, which he easily could have just skipped altogether. As always, the cast is fantastic and the action is very well directed. Danny Pudi is a standout here. Also LeVar Burton has a nice cameo. Overall, it's an 11/10 episode from an already 10/10 show.

One by one they all just fade away...
safenoe1 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First Pierce (inevitable sadly), now Troy departs in this heartfelt episode that represented a major turning point in the future of Community. No more Troy and Abed in the morning. It's a shame Troy didn't make a cameo appearance later on, but still Geothermal Escapism leaves a void not only for Abed, but the series and the whole Community community.

I wish Troy stayed, but still one by one they all just fade away.

Six seasons and a movie please.

Troy's Final Chapter
SnowThatBlows19 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Dan Harmon, you are a genius. This episode is my favorite so far in a season that's a massive improvement from the last. The episode starts off with a premise similar to the paint gun and pillow/blanket war episodes, but instead with the "floor is lava" concept. While this episode is mostly on the game and the survival of the main cast, what makes this episode so special was its final minutes. Troy departing from the gang was probably the most emotional moment we've ever gotten so far in the show, and the scene where Abed just stares at Troy leaving makes me genuinely sad, which not most shows can do. I wonder what can they do without a major character like Troy, and how the show will feel like after Donald Glover's departure. Nonetheless, this is an outstanding episode that concludes one of my favorite characters, and proves Community can still deliver masterpieces.

Troy's Sendoff
lovell704315 April 2022
The only reason to watch this is that it's Troy's last episode. Take that away, and it's utterly ridiculous, and quite possibly the worst episode of the entire series.

I haven't cried so much for a series in a long time, although i do tend to cry for series. But man this time i am crying like crazy. Why is everyone leaving? First Pierce, now Troy? Who is left?

But other than that, such a great and sweet episode honestly. Goodbye Troy Barnes, you will bee missed...

Colorado?
huntergirl-1318919 April 2020
It makes no sense that Greendale is supposedly in Colorado...why didn't they just put it in California, where it is filmed? There are palms everywhere in the first few seasons.
