Terrific overall, with problems towards the end
cherold22 April 2016
I really loved this series overall. The acting is excellent, the plot is winding and clever, and much of it is quite funny. I was consistently drawn in, entertained, and curious what would happen next.

The ride does, however, become a bit bumpy towards the end. The problems are mainly related in some way to religion, both in an utterly nonsensical conspiracy and in some overt supernatural elements that are hinted at throughout the series but are ramped up far too much in the latter part.

Then there's the end, which is both predictable and unsatisfying. Even though this was a miniseries, it's clear that the intention was to have a second season, so they left a mystery unanswered one or two threads loose. This would have been unsatisfying even if a second season were coming, but it's not, which makes it *super* annoying. (Hopefully at some point the developers will give an interview and fill in the blanks.)

If not for the ending, I would have given this a 9 rating instead of an 8. But I've seen far more frustrating finales, so I didn't feel the ending entirely ruined the series; it just made it weaker than it should have been.

Can't wait for next week
addie371 October 2015
great cast, some similarities to the Wrong Mans but much better, already starting to put together a great chemistry of characters. Yes the world is going to end, but don't see Bruce Willis coming to sort it out ! a good mix of conspiracy, humour, great characters, both the main and the peripheral (the women prisoners and Father Alphonse), just enough unpredictability without it becoming disjointed even though you are bing introduced to all the main characters Stand out performances for me Matthew Baynton, Gaia Scodellaro, Rob Lowe & Megan Mullally which is good as they are the main characters. A lot of twists and turns in the first episode so my only concern would be whether they can keep up the pace and the quality of the writing and acting If so I might go to a 10!

This show is brilliant
wickedpeen3 January 2016
You, Me, and the Apocalypse is an amazing show that makes you want more and more and more. From the beginning of the season to the end there are twists and turns that are performed beautifully by an amazing cast. Everyone performs flawlessly in this show and it's quite the story. I loved the first season of this show from beginning to end, by the middle of the season me and my girlfriend were on the edge of our seats every episode. There is a lot of jumping around in the show, but it's surprisingly easy to follow. The show has religious undertones that are really well done, they don't take over the plot, but it's there and it's present throughout the entire show. With two of the characters being a priest and a nun you can pretty much see this coming. Love this show.

A possible next season
djmane11 February 2016
It's too good to stop and whoever wrote it is definitely smart enough to keep it going. Not many dramas can include so many genres done so well, make them interlink so well plus make each show an improvement on the preceding one. There's political, romantic, dramatic, humour, science fiction, religious, scenic, scientific, glamour, sociological and psychological and all done brilliantly. You just don't know what's coming next. Plus it's a tough call to pick who's the standout actor, most of the leads are equally brilliant. Just an excellent production. One last thing, as well as sophisticated and imaginative it's earthy, plus even incorrect, the racist, the soldier and the clergy are painted with sympathy. It's great.

You, Me and the apocalypse
Sausage130 September 2015
Brilliant opening episode, to what promises to be, a brilliant series of television. This has been advertised heavily on UK TV in recent weeks, and after watching the opening episode, it seems the hype is well deserved. Sure, we've all seen the scenario before, asteroid heading to Earth to kill every last one of us, but never set in Slough England before!!. The cast is very strong, some big names mixed with some lesser know names, and i can honestly say, everyone in the opener nailed it. If the show continues as it started, You, Me and the apocalypse looks set to be a very good addition to the end of the world genre !!.

8/10 (So Far !!)

I think this show just keeps getting better and better!
mcblee27 November 2015
From the first episode, I was hooked. As some people may think, there are plot points that could seem implausible but given time are not. The casting is brilliant, Jenna Fischer is a revelation, Matthew Baynton is fantastic, Joel Fry is hilarious, though I've never thought much of Pauline Quirk, she is great, Patterson Joseph and Kyle Soller are a fabulous team, Gaia Scodellaro and Rob Lowe make a strange yet funny couple and lastly Megan Mullaly is still fabulous as a white supremacist. I also appreciate how well the stories begin to intertwine after the first episode. The scripts are well written and sometimes filled with surprises. All in all, I really love this quirky show!

Quirky End of the World
puzzledresearcher8 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
After watching the first two episodes I find YM&tA to be quirky and it has kept my interest.

As long as one goes in with the understanding that this is an off-beat comedy about the end of the world, the tone of the show fits quite well.

Perhaps American audiences might find the British stereotyping of Americana kind of strange.

The comedic elements rely heavily on irony and social commentary, so if those are not your thing then this is not the series for you.

Most of the characters are well performed; I find many of them engaging. The ensemble reminds me a bit of a Coen brothers creation.

Recommended to try at least the first episode and see if this is your kettle of tea.

Loving this show.
mattnation30 November 2015
Slightly perplexed by the last two reviewers (were they watching the same show as me?!), as far as I'm concerned, this is one of the best written shows on TV at the moment. The plot is great - twisting and turning with a fabulous blend of humour and drama. I quite literally don't know where it's going from week to week. Whilst it is first and foremost a comedy - there is enough tension in the plot to make you genuinely concerned for the various characters - some of which meet quite unpleasant endings... The curious blend of Slough and the apocalypse - who'd have thought that would work?!

The acting is top notch - Rob Lowe perfectly cast. Matthew Baynton playing both parts with relish. There's not a week link in it. I will be truly sad when the show is over.

My only complaint is that they really should have stuck with the original title: "Apocalypse Slough!". Genius.

LOVE the cast but....
Jess_Jacobs5 March 2016
I love the cast of this show. It has some of the best actors in the business. For example, Megan Mullally is almost unrecognizable in this show and was perfectly cast as a white-trashy prisoner who plays her role with a breathtaking ease. I love how different this role is for her in comparison to other shows I've seen her in.

Then there is Jenna Fischer who plays the sweet and innocent role, which, to be quite honest, is something I've grown quite bored of from her as an actress. She's a great actress, don't get me wrong-- I'm just tired of the sweet and innocent roles.

Next there is Rob Lowe. Ahhh. what a great character role for him playing the very untypical priest who is a chain smoker.

The overall show is pretty good. I love the concept, I love the actors, I love the writing. But there is still something that is sort of off for me as a viewer. I find myself bored watching the show sometimes and that is unusual for me. Perhaps there isn't enough action. But I will still continue to watch it to see where it goes. With a cast like that, I cannot "not" watch it.

I simply cannot over-sell this SHOW....!!!
djdlaay22 November 2015
I have been employing IMDb for several years now, conceivably in a similar fashion to other registered/unregistered users. To this date, I had never posted my own review albeit not for lack of opinion. About a month ago(early October-ish)while poking around the web, I stumbled upon this little 'gem'; You, Me and the Apocalypse. Simply put, this is an awesome show that was impeccably cast, written, directed and produced. Y,M and the A has a sublime blend of all that makes a program great. I am always pleasantly surprised to see what direction the show will take and I have to say, I found myself quite emotionally taken with the character development. My friends and family have dubbed me as over-critical when I comment on any particular show, series, movie etc. Thankfully there is still good new content being released and I enjoy productions such as Y,M and the A all the more because they stand out from re-hashed, vanilla and blasé mainstream media....;-)

An interesting Black Comedy which tries to add too many elements to the Mix and eventually FAILS.
Dr_Sagan7 December 2015
This is a series about the end of life on Earth because of a meteor that concludes (?) in 10 episodes.

It is basically a satire. The sort of use of humor that has lots of irony, exaggeration, while tries to ridicule, to expose and criticize people's stupidity and vices, politics and of course religion. It has some (maybe) funny moments, but it is black comedy, sometimes even gritty.

It tries to mix too many elements though which, especially in the 10th and final episode where the supernatural becomes more apparent, make the whole series ludicrous.

I don't want to spoil you but you will not get IMO a satisfying conclusion. You will hope for more, during the course of the show, but I think you will end-up empty handed, or maybe holding the "usual" last scene twist in such sort of movies or TV-series.

The cast is capable and the direction adequate but there are things to be desired.

Overall: I don't regret for the 10 42-minutes episodes I watched in 2 days, but the conclusion could have been with more substance and not going for the twist-y easy way out.

Overall, pretty good
Denno197217 January 2021
This is a quirky, reasonably well written end of the world drama, told with humour. The plus points here are that it's array of characters are in the main, well drawn in a quirky tv drama kind of way, with some good performances and it cracks along at a good pace as well as having enough twists and turns that kept me interesting. Although not necessarily an issue, I did find the main character, not so much unlikeable but just so very annoying and I did not root for him at all (maybe that was the point), Rob Lowe and the Leanne character were great though. Overall, enjoyable and it passes the time well but it was not groundbreaking but it didn't crawl under its own weight like many modern US shows that go on for about 100 episodes and 5 series.

Promising start...Dismal finish... Thank God it's Over....(Spoilers)
blackmanx-1062010 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
(Spoilers below -- you have been warned!)

Promising start, engaging middle, much too long in bits and a really atrocious ending. If I could rate bits of it, I would say the 10 stars for the first couple episodes, down to 0 stars for the last.

So... Jamie (Mathew Baynton) is the Son-O-God (as evidenced by his parting of the Thames), but he's left outside the bunker(doing a "red sea" on the Thames is do-able... big door with a sticky hinge... much tricker...)

Ariel (Mathew Baynton) suddenly feels he's surrounded by weirdos (seriously?)

Who's in the box who thinks the monkey is pure evil?

Was Father Jude (Rob Lowe) killed by the Vatican, or did he really hang himself? (Ugh.. this should have been the tip-off... stop watching here!)

Why the compulsion for good people to kill innocent people along the way (the guards at the prison, the tow truck driver).

What was God's plan for Frankie (Grace Taylor) and for Sister Celine (Gaia Scodellaro) and why is she special?

What, exactly was the point of the whole story, besides seeing Dianna Rigg again?

Like a previous poster mentioned.... that's 400~ish minutes I'll never get back.

This could have been a GREAT story... good premise, good acting, clearly high production values, instead, it slowly devolves into drivel. Fun at the start, waiting for the big twist at the end, which is really not a great big twist -- Areal was the cockroach in this distopian apocalypse story. No surprise to see him there at the end.

It feels like the writers, upon hearing that there would be no second season (who could possibly see THAT coming?) decided that no one (including the audience) would get out of the story happy.

Innovative, thrilling, and ridiculous.
jakey-d-7224212 November 2015
Firstly, I don't really know what others have been saying about the accents. They are all pretty solid - the character who they have been complaining about is an intentionally offensive redneck stereotype. Someone else here has complained of the show's low budget. What do you expect? It's a small relatively unknown program in its first series. That being said, initially lower- budget props and sets are replaced in later episodes with filming locations of increased diversity and much higher quality set-pieces. Noticeable or bad CGI is minimal, if there at all.

Anyway... an overview...

Throughout the show, several characters around the ending world have their stories intertwined in what, to be honest, seemed like a boring cliché to me. Then I watched it. I was really, really, really wrong. I mean, I guess the show's subtle humour wouldn't appeal to everyone (the delivery reminds me of Parks and Rec without any fourth wall- breaking), but it's dispersed very naturally in each episode, along with many striking scenes that can be both tantalizing and ridiculous. It is a genuinely new take on the apocalypse genre: something fresh, innovative, and really just great fun to watch.

The main area in which the show shines is in character writing and development. Well, that, and the spiraling web of interconnected story lines that to follow is engaging, moving, and still quite believable. Increasing with each episode is the depth and realism of every character's motivations: their personality; their morality and their sanity. 'You, Me and the Apocalypse' undoubtedly has some of the most diverse and brilliant casting in recent comedy dramas (in terms of fame, race, age and gender).

There's not really much else I can think of that doesn't delve into spoiler territory. SO WATCH IT.

You, Me and the apocalypse
zmac-1443812 November 2015
Disregard the naysayers, this show is top notch comedy. Rob Lowe as the Devil's Advocate...love it!!! Don't forget this is supposed to be wacky funny, just go with it, take the ride! Think CAMP,

1. Something that provides sophisticated, knowing amusement, as by virtue of its being artlessly mannered or stylized, self-consciously artificial and extravagant, or teasingly ingenuous and sentimental.

2. A person who adopts a teasing, theatrical manner.

3. Also camp it up. To speak or behave in a coquettishly playful or extravagantly theatrical manner.

It all boils down to individual preference, of course. I absolutely adore this series, it might not be uproarious comedy but it's definitely incredibly amusing which is equally as entertaining as any gut wrenching laughter. My two cents. Nice day all!

Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely love this show. It is very funny and has lots of entertaining sup plots. There have been many twists to the storyline too. The most interesting twist to the story so far (I've seen up to ep. 7) is Father Jude turning out to be Jamie and Ariel's Father. Matthew Baynton is especially good as Jamie/Ariel. It's always easy to tell which twin he is because he manages to portray many differences between the two characters. Megan Mullally is almost unregognisable, she plays such a different character to Karen in Will and Grace. I can't wait to see how this series ends. For example, I can't decide whether that's Jamie or Ariel in the bunker in the opening credits. Maybe I'm over thinking it but it could be either of them.

Everything you want from a comedy drama
t-c-redman22 January 2020
Excellent.

The series has terrific characterizations, a brilliantly complicated plot, high drama and laugh out loud humour. Best of all it has pace. The plot develops at speed and things happen, lots of them, in every episode. There are none of the soulful looks into the distance or lingering landscapes, nor the endless repetition, that so many TV dramas seem to require these days. In those shows, it is as if they need to fill the time to eek out more episodes and sell more time for commercials. With You Me and the Apocalypse, it is as if there is so much to say, they don't waste a minute on anything you could describe as "filling". I must also mention the dialogue and the actions of the characters; people say and do what they would say in real life. You never shout at the screen, yelling "WHY would they do that?!" Watch it to laugh, to be sad and to ask yourself, "what would I do?" The ending is intriguing and, strangely, benefits from knowing (sadly) there is no series two.

I want to like this more
SnoopyStyle7 June 2016
A meteor is on a collision course with earth projected to wipe out all life. In Slough, England, meek bank manager Jamie Winton is arrested for hacking. He's released and realizes that he has an unknown identical twin Ariel out there. Also his long lost wife Layla is last seen with Ariel. He goes searching for Layla with the help of his friend Dave Bosley. In New Mexico, meek librarian Rhonda McNeil (Jenna Fischer) is arrested for hacking the government. In reality, she's taking the fall for her son. Her brother Scotty works for the President and is unwilling to help. In prison, she has an uneasy relationship with crazy white supremacist Leanne Parkins (Megan Mullally). Ariel breaks her out of prison believing her to be the hacker. At the Vatican, Father Jude (Rob Lowe) is the Devil's Advocate for the church. He takes Sister Celine on a journey to disprove the various claims of a new savior. There are 34 days left and many of these people will end up together at the crucial time.

I want to like this quirky end-of-the-world show a bit more. The Fischer Mullally pairing has some weird fun. The problem there is that they keep getting separated. Rob Lowe is weirdly compelling. The sexual tension adds to his story. The secret twins slowly lose me after awhile. I'm not familiar with Mathew Baynton but he does a good job with duo roles. The scattered story does scatter the tension around. It's also very noticeable that the American story is not filmed in America. This is a show of some ups and downs. There are some nice quirky fun but I would have liked more.

Dumb script, likable cast
PaxD7514 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The series had (1) very likable characters, (2) fun story, (3) build-up to apocalypse, (4) safe, relaxing to watch. This might be enough for lots of people.

I wanted to rate this higher but the entire presentation was riddled with forced, in your face, really stupid subplots.

1. Jenna Fischer obviously not a hacker. Anyone could see that. Yet she's on trial, hunted down, public enemy number one. After escaping, she doesn't want to get caught but goes home, goes to hospital... just goes to all the places where the feds are waiting for her. You enjoy the scenes but at the same time you are forcing your brain to shut down.

2. Mathew Baynton obviously not a criminal mastermind hacker. Obviously not on foreign land hacking government sites when he can very easily be cleared of wrong-doing. Again: force your brain to shut down in order to enjoy.

3. Kyle Soller, in one of the most important & covert positions in government, acts like another numbskull. Even calls police from his cell phone to aid/abet his sister. Sigh... brain must shut down in order to enjoy his scenes too. It was bad enough that he spent large portions crying, riddled with self-doubts and other emotional problems for a person in his position.

4. Lloyd Owen (as president) rooting for the apocalypse and the chance to be locked up with 15 beautiful women for the rest of his life. Ok... this part actually made sense.

5. Karla Crome: took her something like 7 years to get away from the evil twin. A capable, smart and strong individual couldn't make a simple phone call for help in all those years.

6. Good guy Rob Lowe gets assassinated right before getting together with his true love.

The subplots aren't just dumb. They are without common sense. This show wasn't able to tell the difference between funny dumb and plain stupid dumb. Even the ending was atrocious...

7. Evil twin keeps managing to pop up. In the waning seconds (yes... seconds), he manages to show up to bunker, knock the good twin out and enter inside. Good twin is left outside to die.

We aren't even left with a happy ending to make up for all the nonsense we sat through. If I knew it was going to end this way, I wouldn't even had bothered watching the series.

But until that point (with brain turned off), it was somehow fun to watch. Recommend a single viewing if you like care-free, really dumb stuff with likable characters.

Excellent by let down by a few minor issues
emmabundy18 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this show on demand, which gives a different experience to watching it once per week. For this particular show, I think binge watching like this was better.I enjoyed the show a lot - the acting was good and the story had a lot of twists and turns which kept you on your toes and stopped it being clichéd or predictable. Even though e are told the ending (sort of) right at the start, even in the last episode you couldn't guess how they would end up there and who exactly would survive.

My favourite things about this show were 1. It was just the right length. Some shows have 24 episodes which could fit into 10, resulting in lots of filler. This was not the case here, it never felt slow or unnecessary. 2. The way the relationships and links between the characters grew over the course of the show. 3. The fact that this showed us the effect on people in various parts of the world and different walks of life. Most apocalyptic shows usually focus on America and forget about everyone else! 4 the acting, especially of the main character. It must be difficult to act two completely different characters and make them both convincing.

Unfortunately a few small details let the show down, which is why I only gave 8 stars. 1. The "miracle" that happened in the final episode and Frankie hearing voices. These were just a bit too supernatural for me. 2. The relationship between Dave and Paula felt a bit forced, either done for comic effect or as a way of shoehorning Dave into the "family" 3. I find it slightly unbelievable that Ariel could impersonate Jamie so well that even his best friend and his mum were totally convinced. Given that they hadn't actually met until a few weeks ago, although Ariel had been following him and tracking his online presence etc, it just seems unlikely... especially given that it happened twice!

Finally, the ending. I've yet to decide whether I loved it or hated it. There are a lot of open questions at the end that I would like answers to, but I have a feeling there won't be a second season, so these questions will remain unanswered!

Disappointing but not the worst I've ever seen.
hurricane_san7 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The show follows a handful of group of people a few days before an announced apocalypse. The stories have ups and down and are a bit boring, except the "religious" one that I found intriguing.

Overall the show was promising : the general idiocy and nonsense was bearable, resulting in a generally good entertainment. But they had to ruin it in a fated moment where criminal stupidity is used as a lever for the plot, several times in one episode (I'll explain in a paragraph).

In summary this is not the worst I ever seen and if you have high resistance to unbelievable, weak, idiotic plots with their share of holes, you may still enjoy it.

Spoiler about what I mean follows:

It happens the day where the survival of humanity is put in the balance, just a few days before everyone is expected to die in case of failure. a cop basically tells one of the protagonist trying to save the world: "0K, I'll let you save the world but first you have to tell me where your criminal sister is" (the girl is basically a nobody). And puts him in jail when the guy does not talk. This is wrong on so many level : the general behavior of the characters, the priorities of everybody, the fact that important people for the future of the human species are not guarded 24/7 because anything could put said future in jeopardy (virus, car accident, food poisoning, stupid cops, maniac wanting to kill the last hope, ...)

And the "geniuses" tasked to save the world are passing for clowns : only an idiot would measure time not only from a central clock but worse : in a unit affected by time savings.

On another hand, something a bit like that has happened a few years ago. A rocket has been lost (self-destructed) because of units incompatibilities between parts of the machine (Imperial vs Metric).

The Nowhere Road
hydralien27 April 2023
So this has been great most of the season - sharply depicted characters, subtle but poignant humour, overarching all-connecting story, amazing acting, all playing so well together.

And then the final episode came and ended it all pretty much nowhere - plot branches dangling, nothing explained much, new twists just introduced, all that. Such a letdown. I mean, they've probably hoped for a longer run, but even if they did, it's a bit of a bummer to end it like that - for cast and characters and viewers alike. Additionally, it got significantly more grim and serious in the end, contrasting to the previous part.

So... It could have been great, but it ends nowhere so can't really recommenn to anyone, not even while it's great otherwise.

Strangely engaging
Gin-ster30 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I don't usually watch sit-coms because of the way they consist of dialogues clearly written by jokewriters, so I find it hard to get "into" them - I can see the "wizard behind the curtain." But the title and theme of this caught my attention. I wondered how this could possibly work as a comedy. I was pleasantly surprised to find that somehow or other, it is very engaging. It may not be a documentary about what would really happen as "the end" approaches, so I stopped assessing whether or not there was any realism. Instead I enjoyed the strange combination of humor and pathos too, some of it almost cringe-inducing (for example with regard to SPOILER SPOILER the banker's pining over his vanished wife, who is informed she's been seen with his twin (when he hadn't been aware of one). And the cast is also very engaging; even though the structure includes jumping around a lot in location and storyline, the characters held my attention, i.e. I wanted to know what happens to them. I attribute this to excellent casting, acting and writing. I have only seen the first episode and am looking forward to more.
