One of the most fast pacing and unexpected finale i ever watched
watsupgeez12326 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
One of my favourite NCIS eps ever.

Enjoyed how each character is incorporated to a dangerous situation to keep the audience guessing. From tony with the car bomb, Gibbs with the cafe bomb, Gibbs with his throat slitted and Kate taking the bullet for Gibbs saving his life etc. Never a dull moment. The little quirks and bickering between Kate and Tony are always fun.

The last 5-10 mins of the episode is the most unexpected and shocking, being a huge fan of Kate it was devastating to see her go after being attached to a character. But this is due to because Sasha wanted to pursue her personal life more. Sometimes endings are predictable but this is definitely one no one would ever guessed.

The ending of this episode was "announced" a year before
claudeh-120 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
After viewing all the episodes (DVD) of season 1 and season 2 we were shown a not too obvious "hint" of how "Twilight" would end at the very beginning of "Reveille".

When I saw it (episode 1.23) it just seemed like a bad dream.

"Bete Noir" (i.e. nightmare) is also a recurring reference. The term gets mentioned in 2 episodes as well as being the title of one episode.

I don't want to spoil things for anybody that hasn't seen this episode.

Let's just say that NCIS as a series is much more realistic than most TV series are. The "good guy" does not always win in the end.

Sad but true.

I think that is why I feel that NCIS deserves such high marks and is worthwhile recommending to others. The pace is much faster than most TV shows. There is never a dull moment.

A moment that I change to NCIS, forever
OurGeneration11 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The death of agent Kate Todd is so far the moment that changed the show forever, had a higher weight than the death of Jenny Shepard at the end of the fifth season, or the death of Ziva at the end of thirteen season This episode is astonishing as you see it, the climax of Ari-Gibbs history, came to a dramatic pre-conclusion, with Dinozzo stained with blood on his face, or Gibbs simply saying "Ari" She still feels the lack of Kate in NCIS, always they name in its memories like a companion and heroic friend, until they decided a plot to him in the episode "A Man Walks Into A Bar" by means of its sister Rachel. This episode to my consideration is the best end of the season, the whole series, good plot, good connection of the characters, and a simply legendary end, this is the episode that put NCIS on the radar of viewers and become the Drama more seen of the United States taking the place to CSI, will always miss Kate

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Warning: Spoilers
I still have not recovered from this hour of television, all these years later. Yes, the finale of Six Feet Under is perhaps the zenith of emotional impact in this medium for many people, but for me there is nothing as painful as the ending of the NCIS second season finale.

Caitlin Todd, as portrayed by Sasha Alexander, is the ultimate womanly ideal. She is the pinnacle exemplar of what is possible in a partner - such a combination of professionalism and provocation, seriousness and sensuality, intellect and innocence.

Taken too soon say I. WHY, OH WHY?! I holler into the void and all I hear back is my own echo. RIP Cate.

A real bad choice for ending the series season
geekara115 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I went through this series via weekly episodes and the "twilight" was really sad. When regularly viewing a series you are attached to characters and killing one affects the viewers choice.I really think this was a bad choice for the series. However over all this was a good season to watch.I think there will be a difficulty covering this in the next season. We in Asian region were viewing the 2nd season yet.But I hope they cover it well in the future seasons.I think they have now crossed 5th season originally. went through this series via weekly episodes and the "twilight" was really sad. When regularly viewing a series you are attached to characters and killing one affects the viewers choice went through this series via weekly episodes and the "twilight" was really sad. When regularly viewing a series you are attached to characters and killing one affects the viewers choice

Insufferable

Warning: Spoilers
The early seasons of this series do not play well in 2021. I am in the process of watching them from the beginning again. Our attitudes regarding sexual harassment and sexualizing female counterparts have been adjusted thanks to the #Metoo movement. DiNozzo's constant leering and Kate's simpering and ineffective responses are unbearable. I'm surprised they could deliver their lines without gagging. By the end of this arc I was relieved to see it end. Unfortunately the leering and slime did not. Showering after watching episodes is recommended!

Climatic episode!!!
r_melody11 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Absolutely thrilling episode!!! Started slightly slow with the "come back" of DeNozzo after what happened last episode (with the whole Y. Pestis thing). Then while investigating a double murder, the team (more like DeNozzo) foil yet another attempt to kill them (lucky break). Ari is back (yet again) and I can feel how slimy he is and you can also feel that he was strangely focused on Kate seeing how he only wanted to kill Gibbs. Just when you think there might be a "thing" between Kate and DeNozzo after what Kate did when DeNozzo was ill, then BANG...plot thickens!!! A funny episode in general (especially when Gibbs has the little "spar" with the FBI guy about their ex-wife) but very sad ending. I wonder why they wanted or needed to kill her off? She was a late addition to start with and I thought she was great, especially with all the funny dialogues with DeNozzo who is always pushing her buttons I think i should leave it there...A MUST SEE!!!

A Crappy End for Agent Todd
rbr-4129912 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Agent Todd was killed off ostensibly because Sasha Alexander wanted to leave the show to pursue other opportunities. However, the producer surely could have just decided to transfer Todd or disable her or create some family emergency to take her away, or something short of death. That would have left the door open for a return in the future. I have to wonder if Alexander's desire to leave didn't rankle the producers. I remember reading comments of J. Michael Straczynski, creator and writer of Babylon 5 when he removed the character Talia Winters, that he had a trap door built underneath every one of his characters. The actress Andrea Thompson wanted more screen time and to be a more significant player in the drama. However, Straczynski was producing a novel for television and Andrea was not going to get her wishes. So Straczynski pulled the plug. He said at one point, "Generally speaking, about once a year, toward the end of the year, I kinda look around at the characters with a loaded gun in my hand, and say, "Hmmm...if I take out *that* person, what happens? Is there anyone here I can afford to lose? Would it be more dramatically interesting to have this person alive, or dead? What is the absolute bare minimum of characters I need to get to the end of the story and achieve what I have to achieve?" I don't know if Bellasario and his fellow producers took that approach to NCIS, but this program is episodic by nature. There does not seem to be an overall story arc for the series. Therefore, I don't understand the compelling reason to get rid of Agent Todd, especially after all the crap she had to put up with from DiNozzo all season long. It just seems really unjust, considering this is a show about a team that seeks justice.

Very hard gut punch in an otherwise silly and over the top but in a good way show
towe-5162022 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
NCIS is a spin off from JAG. The episode is called Ice Queen and Harm is charged with murder. Harmon and Weatherly made it into the NCIS show whereas Robyn Lively from Karate Kid 3 and older half sister of Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds's wife, for some reason didn't make the cut. Kate was originally Secret Service but if you've seen the first episode you know the deal. The reason they killed her off was because she told them she couldn't do 18 hour days for however many months it takes to film 22 episodes for a season. I've also heard Harmon is very almost bully like on set. So not knowing how they do their contracts I'd say she was signed on for 2 and told them she was done after her contract was up. I mean they really didn't have to kill her off. But maybe she said she would never come back or Harmon & Bellesario don't like being told no. Bellesario got so bad he was actually asked to leave the show and is only the executive producer in later seasons and you see Harmon and even the longest tenured director of NCIS directing episodes. Sean Murray is Bellesario's step son and the girl who plays Tim's sister is Bellesario's daughter and Chip the lab tech who frames Tony is Bellesario's son and appears in JAG also but playing 2 different characters. Kind of like how Fornell doesn't know Gibbs in the Pilot but they are old pals all through the series. So Sasha jumped right into Rizzoli & Isles then ended up being Lips topless Mrs. Robinson while her husband watched on Shameless. She looked well older than her 40 yo self and more proof that sunscreen is a good thing and fake boobs start looking odd after many years. I've seen all 20 seasons of NCIS and the first 2 would be in my bottom 5. Alan Dale as director kept me just seeing Seth's grandpa in the OC. Ducky has always been great and Jimmys character besides Gibbs has had the worst backstory. I love the new blood now that Gibbs found peace and the show with its new blood can go on for another 5-7 years easily. I hope they let Ducky character die before the actor so he can see how beloved he truly is. The series is great from S3-S13 but Seasons 14, 15, 16 & 17 are kind of stale and S18 starts the changing the shows needs so it doesn't get cancelled. Enjoy.

Different perspective
CrimeDrama112 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I did not become interested in the NCIS franchise until 2021 and I was not able to watch episodes in chronological order. Even without the Ari mythology in this episode, too much was asked of us to believe Tony would return to work so soon when the virology doctor stated that the historical survival rate for this type of plague was 15% and a survivor would face a long recovery. I knew about Ziva before Ari because seasons 1-2 were not being aired until last month, after I had watched later seasons with Ziva's story, even the death of Ari, her brother. I do not think the Ari/Ziva storyline is a good one. The sister of the terrorist (also an FBI asset) who tormented NCIS and wanted Gibbs dead, starts working for Gibbs not too long after Ari kills one of the team members. I know very well that crime dramas involve conflict but too often it feels forced. Also, this episode has way too many hints at death. It is ridiculous. Two sailors are killed in their rental car (one disfigured too) and rigged with a bomb and yet only Gibbs takes it seriously? It screams set-up, conspiracy, and targeted attack but only Gibbs acts accordingly. I've never liked the DiNozzo character. Solid agent but in reality he would have been fired and possibly sued for sexual harassment. Why is he even working at a federal law enforcement agency, his ego? He has no known connection to the Navy or Marines. He did not learn to keep his mouth shut until he found out he had a daughter and quit, seriously? This is not a sit-com but I do not find anything funny about sexual harassment anyway.

"That's true. He can be pretty obnoxious."
LegendaryFang5629 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(728-word review) Well, this was THE episode. I knew about the ending from the moment I started this show, and I've subconsciously been dreading arriving at this point. 'Subconsciously' is the keyword, as there were plenty of episodes to get there.

However, as you can expect, that feeling started becoming conscious the closer I got. The previous episode solidified it a ton, as did the stakeout scene in the seventeenth episode. I was like, "Oh, no. I'm closer than ever to that event. Enough with these hard-hitting scenes!" And I think, now that I've watched the show up to this point (and not bits and pieces from when I was way younger, particularly concerning that event), rewatching the first season will be "better" in retrospect/in hindsight because of the new perspective.

I also know about the reappearance of Sasha Alexander in the fifth or sixth season. I mean that in the sense that Caitlin somehow faked her death with Ari's help for some reason/is alive: unless the vague memory I'm thinking of was seeing a photo of her in Rizzoli & Isles. I have no ambiguous confirmation of potential prior knowledge, specifically, whether it was Caitlin or a twin sister thing, which is probably a trope.

I've learned about 'Life Before His Eyes,' the fourteenth episode of the ninth season. I could be vaguely remembering that, but I don't think so: although what I'm recalling could've still been a dream sequence if not an actual twin sister, and Caitlin's for sure dead. I'm pretty sure the whole "Could Caitlin be alive?" thing may've been a plot point down the road; it's that I don't know what came of it.

As far as Ari is concerned, my theory's he's still a double agent. The writing suggests the intention of making you think otherwise, but something makes me think it's a red herring. He gave Gibbs a 24-hour window to locate the (Washington) cell. I bet that was doublespeak: a plan to get Gibbs to prevent this minor attack, allowing Ari to do you-know-what (even though it wasn't Gibbs) to pass the test, allowing him into the actual Washington cell, including getting Gibbs to come after him, taking him down with it; a sacrificial 4D chess move.

Then, there was the incentive of Ari coming after him if he fails: not to mention the prior attempt to kill him or a team member in the beginning, then him specifically (along with civilians), plus Gibbs wanting to do the same to him, and it worked; there's also no way Ari didn't know the purpose behind Gibbs' phone call.

I think he was "playing a part," so to speak. On one side, he did enough to, most likely, strengthen his role with al-Qaeda, but on the other side, he did enough, discreetly, to throw a wrench into the words. In other words, he's doing HIS job, just like Gibbs.

I may be giving him/the writing/the writers too much credit, not to mention the ending was because of Sasha Alexander leaving the show. If I'm right, the writers could've planned to go a different route with him until she decided to leave; I'm curious to know the original ending. But in my head, my hypothesis makes sense.

Also, Mark Harmon pronounced Ari's name at the end as 'r-ee' instead of 'air-ee.' Every time in this episode, it's been the latter until the end, barring being mistaken. Joe Spano went with 'air-ee.' Its pronunciation has been that every previous time in the show, or most times. That was interesting.

On its own, not as a finale, the previous one was better than this one. The scenes with Tony and Caitlin were hard-hitting, and the overall episode felt more effective. This one had sufficient "ingredients," but other than the scenes with you-know-who (whose actor also has a captivating presence) and the ending/knowledge of what will happen, I didn't feel as engaged: although you could say those two things, especially the former, did more than I want to acknowledge, which could be true; the previous episode was super good.

While that gives the impression that I thought it was only alright, that's not true. It's that the previous one was even better. This episode was still good. I can't wait to get into the third season, including familiarizing myself with a certain someone.

Disappointing!
nijell23 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I would describe this series as a tongue in cheek crime drama show. To kill off Caitlin at the end of this season was not necessary just because the actress wanted to leave! The banter between the team both in their office or at a crime scene gives you the impression the director wants you to enjoy in the knowledge they'll always get their man and survive no matter what is thrown at them! Killing Caitlin off is what you would expect in serious crime dramas where they attempt to make scenarios as true to life as possible! Like others have said she could have been transferred leaving her character open to return in future. Anyway this has put me off watching any more. I liked the tongue in cheek feel to this series but not stupid decisions like this which fly against the the ethos of the style of this series. I'd imagine her moving on wasnt a popular decision at the top!! One other character was killed off earlier but not an established main one like Caitlin. So if you are happy to watch a fun crime series but with major culling of main characters when it suits then this is for you!
