If you had any doubt how good this show is..
ScoobySnacks6623 May 2020
Watch this episode. It's timely, it's relevant and it's a testament to how good the team is writing, acting and producing Mythic Quest. Filmed entirely from the homes of the cast on iPhones, the quality is amazing, and considering they are all working from home and in character, the acting is A+ and the story was cute, funny, heart breaking and highly entertaining. Thank you for the fun surprise Mythic Quest crew and Apple. I really enjoyed it!

Validation for the show's internal strength

If I have to convince a TV network to make more seasons of Mythic Quest, I'll show them this episode. It demonstrates how good the acting, writing and chemistry between actors are. But the defining thing about this episode is how fresh it feels, how natural, organic. It sets Mythic Quest in a really good place for its next season.

Fantastic

Just watched this episode. Had seen the show and thought it was really good and fresh. But this episode was just brilliant. So funny and heart felt at the same time. I just wanted it to go on longer. Whoever penned the script for this is brilliant and the Execution amazing. Just what the world needs right now.

Wow. Just wow.

Wow. Just wow. What a hilarious, heartwarming episode I wasn't expecting. Rob McElhenney knows exactly how to pull the heartstrings while making me laugh and smile like no one else. This episode and A Dark Quiet Death are perfect examples of this pathos and I can't wait for more. Such a beautiful take on what everyone's going through during this pandemic and I'm just sad I didn't watch it earlier.

Was this the greatest thing ever produced? YES.
johnc-528 May 2020
That was so awesome and wonderfully inspirational. It was hilarious and apt and also an incredible technical marvel. And it had like 58 million pounds of heart. I loved this show when it came out, so people should watch the whole thing, but this episode is one of the best episodes in TV history. It is perfect and the ending was truly special and inspiring.

This one really lit me up

So much to connect to in this episode. It made me unexpectedly emotional. Don't normally rate the episodes of things (tend to just rate the series as a whole, when it's all done), but this one really did hit the spot!

Funniest COVID-19 show ever
This show was so good I was forced to express my opinion. Anyone who is working through lockdown will find the show completely relatable. Awesome job congratulations to finding humor in these challenging times.

Isolation for Rob
evadav25 November 2021
ROB flexes his directing muscles in this powerful episode, especially relating to the current times. Rob must have used his quarantine time better than I, because this episode is a masterpiece.

Its appreciated how well the struggle of the whole year with Covid has affected many.

Season One Review
southdavid9 December 2021
I feel like I accidentally watched all of this season. I kept meaning to stop, because it's really not good but every so often there was moment that meant I hung in there - and two episodes in particularly, the two most different from the usual tedious stuff were worth watching.

With a major expansion due to be released for their successful MMORPG "Mythic Quest" the staff of the production studio are feeling the pressure. The stressed lead programmer Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) is butting heads with the creative director Ian (Rob McElhenney) over mechanics of a shovel function. Financial director Brad (Danny Pudi) is looking for ways to monetise the new area the game and the games in house writer, CW (F Murray Abraham) is looking for anyway to contribute. All decisions though fall to executive producer David (David Hornsby) but decisions under pressure aren't his strength.

As I said, for the most part, I generally thought that "Mythic Quest" was pretty rubbish. Despite the setting offering the opportunity for some different issues, mostly its dull cliché office based jokes and it's surprisingly pedestrian to say that the minds behind "It's Always Sunny . ." are involved with it. Tonally it's odd too, often replacing shouting for jokes, especially in the earlier episodes, but this does calm down as the show runs on.

However, then you reach the 5th episode. A seemingly entirely unrelated story about a pair of game developers played by Jake Johnson and Cristin Milloti, from a couple of decades earlier that is just brilliant. Tonally spot on, genuinely funny, and touching that makes you wish the main show was more like that one. The quarantine special is the second best episode, and I'd hope that it points towards a better, less obvious show for the second season.

the only quarantine episode i've ever loved
lilygwatson9 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I have always vehemently hated episodes of tv that addressed or involved covid, i couldn't stand it in superstore and i didn't love it in b99 (at least it was over quickly) but this episode just changed my life. It is is genuinely one of the best episodes of the show i've seen so far. And it was heartbreaking and accurate and real and HOPEFUL.

Poppy's reveal on the facetime with ian gave me chills, i didn't realize it was going to get so deep because most quarantine episodes aren't and THAT is what i hate about them. Because we can all make our jokes and mq did that, but it touched on the very real and present side of quarantine that was the infinite loneliness and near-instant depression. We saw poppy's downfall throughout the episode and it was terrifying.

Obviously, poppy's scene was heartwrenching-but then ian showed up and mq allowed poppy to cry. For nearly two minutes. There were not camera cuts, ian didn't need to say anything inspiring, it was natural and honest. THAT is good storytelling.

Then, we end the episode on a minutes-long scene of the mq employees making light for themselves in a time that was, for many people, the darkest they'd ever experienced. They made themselves happy and maybe even crawled themselves out of the worst, most confined pit with the simplest, silliest fun. Just so they all could smile and say they did something awesome with their friends.

This episode is IMPORTANT. I don't know how to say it any other way.

Mythic Quest had a fine first season, this episode took it to Mythic Heights!
mandreasen200121 April 2021
Megan Gantz's work has shown brilliance from Community to Modern Family and here her skills shine to Mythic Heights. The episode was written by Megan, David Hornsby and Rob McElhenney with heart, soul and compassion all while never forgetting the funny.

The chemistry of this cast has progressed throughout the season. It feels effortless as it plays out here in a very special quarantine episode. To feel this seamless from soundstage to isolation as the cast shot their scenes on iPhones from their actual homes is no minor feat.

What a great piece of television. The finest productions in Hollywood aim for this kind of chemistry, kudos to everyone involved as Mythic Quest nears perfection in it's first season.

This episode had me laughing, sighing in tears of sorrow and ultimately crying tears of joy as the writers, directors and cast put together a time capsule piece of art that captured the ethos and essence of these quarantine times.

A masterpiece!

You know you have a special show on your hands when a webcam-based quarantine episode is this good. This episode covers an entire spectrum of emotions. You'll tear up one minute and crack up the next. The writers manage to do justice to the many social nuances on the pandemic and slide in some blink and you'll miss it metaphors as well. The cast is somehow at the height of their charms given the restrictions. I love this show and Always Sunny, but this show gives us something Always Sunny rightfully doesn't. These characters care about each other and take the time to show it. They do genuinely decent things. You can come away from an episode of television like this feeling uplifted. Kudos to everyone in front of AND behind the camera. Well done.

This came as quickly as the DQD episode. Really funny, the scene between the writer and the assistant made me cry with laughter, the Rube Goldberg scene was very fun and the emotional scene was really heartfelt. This is definitely my favourite episode, my current ranking being:

1) Quarantine 2) Dark Quiet death 3) Dinner party 4) Non-player character 5) Brendan 6) Blood ocean 7) The casino 8) Permadeath 9) The convention 10) Pilot.

QUARANTINE: A slightly mixed bag, but an overall successful distraction
acjd_shmacjd22 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I don't really see the point of MYTHIC QUEST doing a virtual episode, but they could, so they did, and the result was mostly good, with some gripes.

-POPPY-

Likely my favourite part of the episode, QUARANTINE showcases Poppy's struggle with loneliness. Initially, she's just grinding away at work because it gives her a sense of purpose, but when all her work is done and David and Ian both say that she should stop working and take a break, she really can't handle it. It's not all doom and gloom, though, and one of the most heartwarming moments of the series thus far sees a genuinely, (hopefully) selflessly concerned Ian visit Poppy and give her a shoulder to cry on. It's a great resolution to a sad plotline, and showcases some excellent development from not only the notoriously narcissistic Ian, but from the never-ever-let-yourself-be-vulnerable Poppy as well.

-DAVID & BRAD-

A significantly weaker, but still entertaining sideplot is the facial hair bet between David and Brad. I have issues with the way this plot is set up: David's proposition of the bet feels spontaneous and somewhat forced; Brad's initial aversion to the $100,000 donation feels kind of pointless - David is still the boss, right? Brad can dislike the idea, but if David says it happens, then doesn't it still have to happen? He'd rather shave off his facial hair and eyelashes than overrule his Scrooge McDuck employee? It doesn't really make sense to me. An odd start aside, this plotline, featuring David and Brad facing off in Street Fighter, is pretty fun, and nothing more.

-TESTERS-

My biggest problem with not only this episode, but the show as a whole, is the whole plotline with Dana, Rachel, and eventually Lou. I won't go into detail about my every overall gripe with them and their stories, but I will say that their plotline in MYTHIC QUEST is so much massively weaker than any other in the entire series due to poor writing and even poorer acting. This episode, however, was probably their best yet (though, of course, that's not saying much), as it actually showcased a relationship that wasn't just Dana-does-nothing-Rachel-is-enamored-Lou-is-gross. Camera tricks for sharing snacks leads to them actually having a decent time - until, of course, Strawman Lou says there should be less women, for absolutely no reason, completely undercutting the scene. However, this plot did lead to the finale of the episode, where everyone in the office gets together in an online video meeting in order to do one large faux Rube Goldberg machine in order for Dana to eat a chip. It's over-the-top and silly, and joyful and triumphant, and it feels like a great way to wrap up this special episode of MYTHIC QUEST.

-CONCLUSION-

There are other, more minor plotlines in this episode that I didn't feel like going over, but overall, this quarantine special of MYTHIC QUEST was pretty good, with nice moments of heart and decent moments of humour to go along with. It's not the great step up I was hoping the show would make after the good first season, but maybe that jump will come in season 2. For now, this and the previous 9 episodes will be enough to tide me over if I ever crave more.

... the writers and director are geniuses!

The actors, the "set-up", everything - one of the best episodes OF ANYTHING I have seen this year - and I watch far too much tv and movies.

Of all the quarantine episodes of shows over the last year this one did everything it needed to do while still keeping with the heart of the show and not being preachy. I'm very impressed.
