Abduction
ThomasDrufke6 March 2017
This was definitely the Supergirl episode we needed. After a few mediocre outings, the show may very well be back on track. I think this episode, more than anything, showed how good the series can be when it utilizes everyone in an effective way. I certainly felt the entire ensemble's presence tonight.

The follow up to Jeremiah's betrayal turned out to be what I expected, the first step towards his redemption. It was going to be difficult for a lot of people to get behind having Dean Cain be a complicit villain to Brenda Strong's Lillian Luthor. So I wasn't shocked to see him lend a hand to Alex at the end, but I don't have a good feeling about his chances going forward. I would bet money on Jeremiah's death by the end of the season. Giving the Danvers' girls just the motivation they need to finish off Cadmus.

Cadmus spent the evening abducting all of the aliens registered, while Kara tried to take them out via her own blog. Yeah, I'm not sure how much I liked the fact that she was even a reporter in the first place. Can't the DEO just pay her? But I was getting some sort of enjoyment out of Snapper Carr's hatred for Kara. Should we expect Kara to get her job back as fast as Barry got his back as a forensic scientist this season? It seems likely.

Tonight's episode was actually more so an Alex episode than it was Kara's, and it worked better than expected. Chyler Leigh has come a long way since the first few episodes of the show, and some of her finest work to date was tonight. She handled the drama, the romance, and the action all so well. The latter of which was a major highlight overall this week. The raid on the bar, which took Lyra captive, featured seamless transitions between bullets and punches thrown from Alex, Maggie, Winn, and even Guardian. It got a little jump-cut heavy at first, but I certainly felt the weight of the moment.

This was a well-paced, acted, shot, and structured episode. In fact, it's one of favorites to date. Capped off with an emotionally impactful climax featuring Kara save all of the alien's lives aboard a ship. Keep this up, Supergirl.

+Well paced

+Plenty of action

+Chyler continues to impress

-So no more reporter?

This should have been an entire season.
jegd-847-6314076 March 2017
Here's an episode that should have concreted into the series itself. The issues of immigration, illegal aliens, refugees, fake news and what's wrong with all of it - is the largest source of conversation we have this year. This was a MUST SEE for viewers and the problem being; it's only this episode.

Immigration should have laid out the entire season for this show. It's current, it's on-point, and (above all) the topic of interest. Supergirl could have transitioned from its dull high school-like drama into something EVERYONE CAN RELATE TO ...

Think of Marvel comics mutant issues and how it relates to real world racism. DC had an opportunity to grasp this same concept and they crammed it into one episode.

Sad.

Secondly, the current state of yellow journalism and the way mainstream U.S. media adapted to sensationalist click-bait; It was a great idea to have CATCO take a stand against superficial thought with zero research. I WISH news organizations were listening to Ian Gomez's character explaining the results of irresponsible reporting.

Active Blogging; Influential bloggers today are driven by emotion, and writers will position their opinions bluntly without any balance. It's basically parroting the voices of a lot of people and it's borderline exploitation. It's appeasing to the masses for profit and/or attention. I'm grateful this episode brought that scrutiny to the audience.

I'm NOT looking forward to the next episode where Supergirl learns Mon-El is actually royalty. I love that Kevin Sorbo & Teri Hatcher are on board for this show, but (again) it's falling back to the same teen-angst drama that ruined vampires. You don't need to rely on such sexist tropes to appeal with young women. Frankly it's killing their ratings.

Good episode, but a few wrong (arguably) ideas were conveyed
vivekbalasundaram28 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Overall, "Exodus" was kind of good in terms of the action and the character development, though I disagree with some of the ideas conveyed in this episode.

Firstly, regarding the way J'onn tried to determine whether Alex was biased or not, I think it was a smart (and totally unexpected!) move on his part and he was totally justified in determining whether or not Alex would act in the best interests of the DEO. He needn't have apologized to Alex in the end. While Alex's heart may have been in the right place, she should have put the interests of the DEO above her own views about her father's innocence. And all J'onn did was put her off this one case so she doesn't sabotage the operation. But the writers made a big deal out of it, like J'onn was in the wrong and I think in doing so, they ended up conveying the message that every person should just make decisions based purely on emotion, rather than reason. I strongly feel that this is a really, really wrong idea. Hitler thought he was right in doing what he did. And so do terrorist organizations across the world today.

Secondly, I disagree with Kara's decision to, put it mildly, very irresponsibly blog the article online just because Snapper wouldn't publish the article because he needed verifiable sources. This again, is a decision based purely on emotion, though I think, in this case and this case only, she was justified in doing what she did because she ended up saving lives and warning the other aliens. But in general, reporters, especially, should be very careful about what they post online. As Snapper put it, "You weren't right, you were lucky. And next time you might not be. One wrong statistic about the stock market and suddenly we're in the Great Depression. One misattributed quote from a candidate and you put a fascist in the White House. The rules are there for a reason. To make sure you get the story right. That's not luck. That's being a good reporter."

Thirdly, I don't get why DEO, with Winn's technical genius, was unable to predict the next alien victim and thus nab the culprits, but Alex and Maggie were somehow able to instantly and accurately get the location of the next attack! And once Alex found out about the warehouse, she should have just informed the DEO, and then maybe Supergirl, J'onn, Guardian and Mon-el would have been able to rescue Jeremiah in addition to saving the aliens, instead of Alex making a botch of the whole affair and Supergirl just managing to stop the space shuttle last minute.

Lastly, though, I would like to add that Winn and Lyra make a really cute couple and their chemistry really is a joy to watch! :)

+ Good Action throughout

+ Winn and Lyra's relationship

  • Blaming J'onn for his "deceit"

  • Kara's irresponsible blogging

  • No explanation as to how DEO was unable to track the next alien victim but Alex and Maggie were.

  • Alex going to save the aliens on her own

Supergirl - S02E15 Exodus
j_forbesy8 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure if this was just a generally great episode all round or it was just a solid episode in what has been a pretty low second half of the season, but either, damn this was the episode Supergirl needed. Not since the first half of the season have we had an episode as well done like this one. The focus was where it needed to be, their was stakes, the romantic plot lines were in the background and our main character wasn't so big headed.

I know this mainly happened at the end of the episode but I need to start here, thank god they knocked Kara down a few pegs. One of my biggest complaints about the second half of this season is how big headed Kara has become. She was taking on her bosses and rubbing it in their face when she was right, she was jumping on her "I'm Supergirl" high horse when she had the lower hand in an argument, she was simply not the Kara they gave us for the first season and a half. This all changed this episode. In the real world, crossing your arms and putting your foot down isn't the best was to get around a problem, and Kara learned it the hard was this episode. As someone who is currently studying journalism, one of the first things you learn is there is no story without proof and sources. What they did this episode was have Snapper hold strong with that rule and did what any real boss would do and fire her. Regardless of if she was wrong or right, similar to the Lena Luthor situation, if she wanted to do that job seriously, she would of done it the proper way, but she didn't and therefore got the punishment she deserved.

I mentioned in the intro that they was stakes in this episode, something that we haven't had for a while. When that spaceship was flying out to space and Kara was trying to stop it, I actually had no idea what was going to happen, and I loved that. In recent weeks, the show has been predictable and you never felt like they have ever been in real danger. I felt danger this week. I was starting to think of how they are going to get Alex back from space because at one point I was convinced Kara was going to fail. Going into the back end of the season, stakes like this are needed, my hope is that when they do come, sometimes the good guys lose.

Something I have to touch on, neither as really a positive or a negative, which in many ways is a positive for me, is the relationships. They were just there this episode. There was no drama, not story revolving around them, they were just present and the show moved on. That's what I want in a show like this. It's okay to have a little drama here and there but when it comes down to the nitty gritty of the season, I want to be concentrating on out end goal not whether Kara and Mon-El are going to stay together or not.

Moving into something I had a slight problem with is the Alex situation. While I agree to a certain extent that what Jonn did with ethically wrong, I still agree that the decision to suspend her from the mission was the right one. Usually what comes next is something from Kara, but because it was Alex, I don't view it as negatively. Alex's decision to continue working annoyed me because it is the flip side of the Snapper/Kara situation during the episode. Regardless on what is right or wrong, there's a line you can't cross and she crossed it. I know the theme of the episode was doing wrong things to do right, and what Jonn did was in line with that theme, I think in every real world situation, there is a line of how wrong can you go to do right and both Kara and Alex crossed it in my books. Shows like this use themes to teach younger audiences life lesson, however I think sometimes they might simplify those lessons a bit too much and the message they are trying to get across isn't what it should be.

There is one big negative I had with this episode and this is a problem I have had for a while now, Mon-El. I really like this character and I'm excited to see a bigger story revolving around him soon, but for the mean time, he is being short changed. Why is he even on this show at the current moment. When he first came on the show they balanced him well between him adjusting to Earth life while training to be a superhero. Now they balance him between a romantic love interest who gives love advice and a bar tender, which in many shows is the same thing. I don't want to get to the end of this season and he is no longer around and he is just going to be remembered as the alien that was always hanging around.

Overall, while this wasn't a perfect episode, this was a massive step in the right direction for the back end of the season. For the first time in a while I'm excited for Supergirl next week, and that is always a great sign. Hopefully they can continue to pull the ship up and avoid an Arrow season 4 situation where it started strong but crashed and burned in the second half.

Very affecting with character development & some closure
sandwichbill7 March 2017
Unlike other reviews, I do not think the show is docudrama on the state of world today. Come on Folks! Getting us to relate to the plot thru similarities to headlines has kept ' Law and Order ' on the air for decades.

The tribute to the writers is to use it as segue to the story they want to tell, not the political commentary some reading into it. I know 'Integrity' is a reach in today's television status quo but the benefit of the doubt has to be given to the writers.

They are trying to keep this comic book interesting and not using this venue to moralize and advise people on where to stand on the political issues affecting us all today.

That's what reality TV has done to the art form we used to take for granted.

Tough subjects turned into compelling stories. That's what Emmys and Oscars recognize. Edward R. Murrow telling us about the Wizard of Id. But I digress, I liked the show and hope they keep it as concise and action filled as this one was.

SUPERGIRL takes a stand against deportation
GomezAddams6666 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Thanks to the betrayal of a loved one the Anti - Alien Organization CADMUS is in possession of the Alien National Registry, which is meant to protect aliens on earth but it ill be used now to locate, detain and deport aliens from earth.

CW's Supergirl is way ahead on Social Issues than any other Superhero show, using controversial topics such as sexism, empowerment, gay relationships, racism, discrimination in general. The show uses discrimination against aliens to take a stand in multiple ways but tonight's episode was nothing short of bold, blunt, honest and unapologetic, it dealt a steel blow to massive deportation efforts by Herr Trump... I mean President Trump, comparing his methods to those of a fictitious terrorist organization that will stop at nothing until their genocidal plans come true.

What else can we expect when the show protagonist Melissa Benoist? Who proudly stood on Washington's Women March with a sign that read "Hey Donald, don't grab my ***** - It's made of steel."

In fact, the bold approach this show uses has surpassed those analogies used in other Comic Book related properties who highlight discrimination against people in the form of mutants, inhumans or empower people.

And I understand Nazi... I mean, Republican sympathizers might be offended but after all Superheroes have been fighting tyranny and oppression for almost a century, whether is Captain America punching Hitler right on the face on the first issue, the Marvel Superheroes helping the NYFD after 9/11 or now Supergirl taking a bold stand against deportations, we know that Superheros will not bow down to fear, and their true power is not in their superhuman strength but in their braveness and unstoppable heart.

great action, just leave the (ignorant) political stance out of it
Yes, everything the other reviewers say about Chyler Leigh's dramatic performance here is true. As for Supergirl holding back a starship, suffice to say that I find it too much to take, I mean, if she can do that, there's really no thrill in seeing her taking on bank robbers and such like... but okay...

Just to say that the episode gets my vote for action and suspense.

But there are things that bother. We're bombarded by the anti-male stance, and liberal politics keep on building illogical utopian view castles in the air. The show dreams about overthrowing those that built the Western world... Supergirl was created for a time when the old Red, White & Blue had its back to the wall on the European front, and is now being hijacked by everything that is in essence far-flung from old American ideals.

There might not be many such references in this particular episode, but the strongest one to date was in here, the blatant labelling of the leader of the Free World as a "fascist"... a guy who is simply being a wise father putting America first. I think that is an uncalled for low blow. In a show that carries the old Red, White & Blue with an All-American blonde blue-eyed cheerleader heroine, how utterly moronic ironic.

Keep less-than-insightful politics out of entertainment!

Ummmm It's Earth-38 folks
heavymetalheathen25 August 2020
Soooooooo

Question: Who is the President of the United States on Earth-38?

Answer: NOT Donald J. Trump!!!

So Snapper is referring to the Female Space Alien President as a "Fascist"?

I thought she passed a bill on behalf of "Alien kind"?

So here we have Earth 1 politics being force-fed on a totally different Earth.

I understand that the Liberal writers are trying to make a point about "Orange Man Bad", however at least understand the premise of the show you are writing about.

Maybe Earth-38 has the same "Social Issues" as Earth 1, but it ISN'T Donald Trump..so STOP all ready.

If I want to hear how bad Trump is I'll watch CNN or MSNBC or I'll read headlines on Yahoo or just google it!

The whole idea of a TV SHOW like 'Supergirl' is so I can escape the real world for 42 minutes. And before you all tell me how it's a "Platform to discuss social issues" save it. No Liberal messages on an 'Arrowverse' TV show is changing minds or solving issues. It just creates more. There are platforms for politics, my shows need to be left alone. Plenty of storylines that don't need politics in them.
