Sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it
4 June 2023
I don't know what I can add to the commentary that hasn't already been discussed a thousand times. The fact that this movie only has a rating of 7.7 at the time of this review, is unfortunately telling as to how many people had/have an issue with a non-heterosexual love story.

The movie itself is beautiful. It is aesthetically stunning, with the Southern Alberta mountains being a joy to behold. The soundtrack composed by Gustavo Santaolalla is rustic, heartfelt, and perfectly captures the strange and particular loneliness these characters feel.

And then, of course, there is the love story. I wish we lived in a world where this story could remain purely ficticious, and didn't have a single tie to reality. Sadly this is not the case, and there have been countless Ennis & Jacks out there who never got to lead fulfilling lives because of the bigoted shackles society cast upon them.

And that is to say nothing of the heartbreak felt by the wives of these men, who also suffered unspeakable loneliness, trapped in relationships out of expectation, never understanding why they were not loved in the same way they loved their spouse.

This movie presents to us not just a beautiful love story, but a time capsule; a glimpse into a very real past that many of us have lived, in one way or another. At the end of the day, we're all human. And it is so unbelievably tragic, that some people never got the chance to feel that way.

Looks promising, but still unsure about the casting choices
19 January 2023
As a massive fan of TLOU games, I was very excited for this, though the casting choices made me scratch my head based on appearances alone. However, most of the cast have proven themselves very capable thus far.

Bella Ramsey and Nico Parker, who play Ellie and Sarah respectively, despite not looking anything like the original characters, absolutely knocked it out of the park and nailed the roles. Bella's performance makes me hopeful for the rest of the series.

The main outlier and main concern of mine so far is, surprisingly, Pedro Pascal. Pedro's performance as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones was fantastic, and he quickly became one of my favourite characters. However, his performance as Joel seems to be a little lacklustre, or perhaps miscast.

Joel Miller is a very nuanced character; an extremely vulnerable and broken man who developed a stoic/hardened/detatched/bitter front after his tragic loss. I am not feeling that level of depth from Pedro's performance... so far he just seems a little reserved and aggressive.

*That* opening scene in TLOU game made me extremely emotional to the point of tears in every playthrough. The TV version felt underwhelming by comparison, outside of Nico's incredible performance.

I'm excited to watch the rest of this series, but I do hope Pedro leans more into the role of Joel as the show progresses. Also to the reviewers insulting gamers for their passion for video games, please try to develop a prefrontal cortex at some point in your lives.

Bros (I) (2022)

Eh
20 December 2022
Ever since I knew I was gay, I've always been on the lookout for people of a similar nature, as humans naturally do. "Gay" people in film/tv have often been heavily stereotyped. EG the effeminate gay best friend, or the badass butch lesbian who is just one of the boys.

While bros does try a little bit harder to break through the stereotyped glass ceiling, it still falls into that category of trying so hard to be gay that it feels unrelatable to most gay people, and no doubt straight people as well.

It's not a bad movie and is quite entertaining, and is worth the watch for those elements. But a core idea of this movie is the normalisation of sexuality with society, which is something it fails to do.

Normalisation occurs when we have love stories between peole who happen to be gay, like Brokeback Mountain. A character's sexuality should not be the driving force behind the movie; the characters should be interesting in themselves in a variety of ways.

A surprisingly hilarious and charming spoof of sci-fi action thrillers
17 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Didn't expect much going in, what with the low reviews... but this gem of a movie entertained me far more than most high-rated/big budget animated movies manage to.

The writing is surprisingly tongue-in-cheek and openly mocking of action thrillers, sci-fi, and American culture ("Once again, a UFO has landed in America-- the only country UFOs ever seem to land in"). There are plenty of comedy elements for young viewers and adults alike.

The story, while basic (to the point of being self-parodying), is well-executed enough to be entertaining the whole way through, as the protagonists are quite endearing in their own ways. Combined with a mix of both simple and well-written comedy, this one and a half hour gem was worth the watch... and rewatches!

8.5/10 - shines above many animated films due to its surprisingly well written and self-parodying humour. "Oh Susan, ever since you were a baby I knew that someday... you would, you know, save the Earth from an invasion from outer space."

A hilarious, horrifying descent into madness
26 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
While this show carries the Tim & Eric torch of whacky, surrealist humour in 'late night broadcasting' format, it differs greatly from the rest of their work, and holds the position for the scariest thing they've ever made.

At the start of the show the tone is fairly bright and upbeat, but as the episodes pass, everything starts going wrong. Brule's brain damage worsens, several dark characters appear seeking to harm Brule, the topic of each 'Check it Out' becomes more sinister, and evil supernatural presences begin to affect the show itself.

Anyone who enjoyed Tom Goes to The Mayor will like this show, as it has a very similar dark tone, and even similar disgusting products & advertisements.

If I had to classify Check It Out, I would call it a very funny horror, rather than a very scary comedy. The tone is just too consistently dread-inducing to be called otherwise. But it very much works in its favour, and despite being extremely uncomfortable to watch, it was absolutely worth my time. I'm excited, and a little nervous, to rewatch it again in the near future.

1 episode in and I've almost had a collapsed lung from laughing.
12 October 2021
This show is possibly the most consistently funny T&E work I've had the pleasuring of viewing. The constant berating of guests, the talking over each other, and the most shoddily-timed live edits in all of television.

The editing actually takes the spotlight in this show, T&E's style of "worst possible outcome" works so well with a live-television setting, and the nonsensical live effects just get funnier each time they occur.

Give this a go even if you don't usually like T&E's work.

It's just a memory now.
13 September 2021
Wanna know how much I loved this show? Every time a new season came out, I'd watch the show from the beginning again. I had seen season 1 eight times when the last season was released.

I will never rewatch this show again. Honestly, most of the time I don't even remember it as a TV show, like if a friend asks me what shows I'd recommend or avoid, it doesn't appear in either a good way or a bad way.

That is the worst possible feeling a TV show, or any form of art, can leave a person with: indifference.

This show, which once had the best characters, music, worldbuilding, cinematography, EVERYTHING-- is nothing more than a memory, to which I feel nothing but indifference, with a dash of disappointment.

Overall I rate it 7, because as I said-- EVERYTHING about it was nearly perfect for a very long time. And even in Season 8, everything except the writing was still nearly perfect. But the writing was just that bad.

What a shame. What a waste.

A Classic
31 August 2021
This show is whimsical, surreal, musical, colourful, and very very adventurous. The shenanigans of Howard & Vince, despite being contained in such a short series, will leave you with a lasting impression.

It's very good quality humour, yes, but so much more. Julian & Noel have such an adorable friendship, which works so well for Howard & Vince's chemistry. The Mighty Boosh has real heart to it, and is one of the most relaxing shows to unwind to.

Come with us now on a journey through time & space!

Deliberately over the top, corny, inconsistent, and bloody hilarious
26 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This show is such a hidden gem. As far as I know this show never saw the light of mainstream entertainment, but it is something of a 'simplistic masterpiece' in spite of its low budget.

The Spoils of Babylon takes surrealist and satirical humour to the max. Production-wise, it is deliberately horrendous. The two main characters' have accents that change with every new scene, along with their hairstyles, which often match the ridiculousness of the characters' personalities. A few scenes even take place on a tiny-scaled set made up of props and toy cars.

These factors leave us with the impression that the show doesn't take itself seriously at all, which works favourably with its overall tone and comedic elements.

The humour itself is actually very high quality, and there are some one liners that will make you struggle to breathe. ("That tart has a name--Dicksy Melonsworth! Show some respect!") Kristen Wiig is her usual hilarious self, and who knew Tobey Maguire had such a natural capacity for comedy?

All in all, this show is an excellent way to kill a couple hours. It's nice and short, and is very easy to watch, owing to its great comedic writing & carefree tone.

Demon's Souls (2020 Video Game)
8/10
The remake itself is amazing, but a reminder of how dated the gameplay is.
26 August 2021
The remade graphics, music, and enhanced combat fluidity are all top notch, and Bluepoint did very well at honouring the original game.. a little too well. Some additions to the game would've been welcome. And maybe even some new voice actors, since some of the original voice actors flat out sounded like they did not want to be there. (looking at you Boldwin)

Re-playing the game in the enhanced world of PS5 capabilities & graphics really made me realise how crappy the gameplay actually is in comparison to the other Soulsborne games. It's a lot more basic, with far fewer movesets for all weapons, and far fewer spells (offensive miracles practically non-existent).

My favourite class across all RPGs is a mage, and in Demon souls you need 3 essential items to play to your full potential as a mage: a ridiculous headgear, a ring, and a dagger. Basically, to do your maximum damage as a mage, you have to completely limit your gameplay (only 1 spare ring slot, same helmet for the entire game, and little to no use of a shield). Really clunky design.

That and the awful, overly-complicated and overly-punishing mechanic of 'World Tendency' made me realise that this game should've been reimagined, not just remade at a higher quality. Enhanced gameplay would've made this game one of the best of all time... instead it's just 'good'... perhaps great if you've never played Demon's Souls before. I suppose I've been spoilt by the other Souls games, but nonetheless, I stand by my comment.

It's still very much worth the playthrough, especially if you've never played it before. The worldbuilding and atmosphere are some of the best in the whole Soulsborne series. Despite the dated combat design, Bluepoint managed to make the game feel both fresh and new, as well as nostalgic and reminiscent. Overall, 8.5/10.

Dark Souls II (2014 Video Game)

Grew to love it.
26 August 2021
I tried playing this game maybe 3-4 times, always sequentially (after DS1 & demon's souls, and before DS3 & Bloodborne), always for about 10-20 hours.. and then I quit every time.

My complaint back then (when I would've rated it a 5 or a 6 out of 10) was pretty much just "this doesn't feel like dark souls", and in a way I still stand by this quote... but no longer view it as a bad thing.

DS2 actually excels above the other games in a number of ways. It is the largest/longest game in the series by FAR, it has the most variety of playstyles/classes, which are actually better balanced in comparison to the other Souls games. Hexer class & dual-wielding any weapon are a massive addition to the series, and the PvP is the most balanced I've seen out of any of the games, with little capacity for twinking.

DS2 is definitely a different kind of world from the others. But if you look past the stylistic difference of this game and immerse yourself in the new world, you might find yourself loving it just as much-- or perhaps even more, than the other games in the Soulsborne universe.

Tom Goes to the Mayor (2004–2006)
9/10
What an adventure.
28 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This show is bloody brilliant. Tim and Eric are absolute comedy geniuses, and it's cool to see that they were like that from the start. I believe they were around 25-26 years old when they wrote the very first TGttM, and even from such a young age they had already established their unique brand of humour with great competence.

This show is also tremendously bleak, and almost feels post-apocalyptic at times. I honestly can't tell if the mayor is a complete airhead or a megalomaniacal genius who has the town under his thumb, using Tom to do his evil bidding and then making him take the fall for it.

Tom Goes to the Mayor is a must watch, whether you're a T&E fan or a lover of dark humour, dry humour, and satire.

Also, fair warning: some of the episodes are flat out hard to watch due to how much suffering Tom goes through, to the point where it's actually depressing. Despite that, I'm already excited to re-watch it in the near future!

Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
Season 8, Episode 6
3/10
The ending (and lead-up) is obviously atrocious, but...
7 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Forget about that for a moment and have a read through all the 10/10 reviews on this episode if you want a good laugh. It's absolutely hilarious how blatantly lacking these people are in intelligence;

"10/10, he petted ghost. Don't give into your anger, it was a good ending!"

"10/10, the Starks deserve to rule after all the bad things that happened to them." right, because this series is most definitely well known for good things happening to good people for no other reason than "they deserve it".

"10/10 was mostly good except for the character Grey Sperm, he reminds me of an American revolutionist"

Go figure the people who actually liked this abomination of a finale aren't doing too well in their upstairs departments.

As for my rating -- 3/10. The acting, the score, the directing, the special effects, the editing, aka everything but the writing, was phemonemal. I'd rate the episode a 9 or 10 if I were judging on those components alone. Unfortunately this is a story-driven show, and the abysmal writing dragged down everything else with it.

Ellar Coltrane
20 April 2021
This movie is quite profound and worth the watch if you're into films that have real meaning, but that's not what my review is about.

I see not just a couple, but an overwhelming number of reviews that insult Ellar Coltrane's acting skills. I have to question the intelligence or perhaps sanity of the people who have written these reviews. The character of Mason(Junior) is the most accurate portrayal of a teenager I have ever seen. I really don't know what they expect, have any of you people ever encountered a teenager? Do you not remember being a teenager yourself?

Mason Junior is aloof, quirky, thinks himself special compared to others... he reminded me of most of the male classmates I had throughout school. I think people are too used to 'Hollywood' teenage characters, which are not at all in line with reality. Ellar did a fantastic job of playing something 'real'.

Profoundly eye-opening.
10 April 2021
Who would ever imagine that such a simple animation could have such a multi-faceted, existential impact on its viewers?

'It's Such a Beautiful Day' is an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. It may seem disjointed/random/nonsensical to some, but I believe this is an intended effect to demonstrate the gravity of the protagonist's mental health issues.

The movie delves into some very visceral aspects of the human condition. A lot can be taken away from it, especially for people who might be struggling to see any meaning to life, or those who have some underlying fear towards the concept of death. One line in particularly has made me cry every time I've rewatched the film.

Even if you cannot relate to the movie at all, it is very aesthetically & euphoniously pleasing to one's senses, and at a humble runtime of 62 minutes, it is most definitely worth watching.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013–2021)
6/10
Very entertaining, except for the dumbed-down humour and forced conflict resolution
17 March 2021
This show is well worth the watch, especially the first time around. The comedy has a lot of high quality moments; I don't think there's a single episode that didn't have me laughing my head off at one stage or another. That being said, I can't help but feel that this show underestimates its viewer, as very often the jokes will be explained / punchlined BY the characters themselves. EG a character might quote something that is very obviously a reference to a movie, and then say the name of the movie once finished, just in case you didn't get it. This means that the viewers who understand the references aren't rewarded. In addition to this there are a lot of jokes (especially cold opens) where the punchline is literally just people screaming, yelling, or otherwise making a lot of noise instead of saying something humourous. Nonetheless, the high quality jokes shine and leave a lasting impression.

Another problem is the show's overly-the-top, cheesy, feel-good tone. Don't get me wrong, I love feel-good stuff; Parks & Rec is probably my favourite show of all time, and Brooklyn 99 actually has more serious moments in it than P&R. But unfortunately, the show carries a very in-your-face, down-your-throat attitude of 'This WILL end happily.' Within the 22 minutes of each episode, the characters are met with whatever conflict, which absolutely inevitably is solved by the end (unless it's a to-be-continued episode), and it frequently just does not meet with reality. A quick apology undoes harsh words, puzzling cases are solved by sheer coincidence (House M. D vibes), and everyone has grown and learnt something, which they often audibly share with each other.

It's still a very good show and delivers its humour well, but forced happy endings within very short character arcs lead me to feel 'overloaded' on sickly-sweetness, and made it harder for me to connect with the show on a deeper level (which is obviously wants, as it presents the characters as real human beings with real issues that often prop up in real life). That + the dumbed down humour can be a bit cringeworthy at times.

But I still think it's very much worth the watch.

Absolutely hilarious.
15 March 2021
This show is just good clean fun. Every scene is almost making fun of itself in its absurdity... I can imagine Connor, Christiaan & Nicholas (The writers/directors/stars of the show) laughing their heads off as they thought up all the crazy scenes and witty lines.

Also very much appreciate the bromance of the main characters, kind of adorable to watch the 'Soul Mates' connect with each other in different ways throughout the ages. (I secretly hope that they're all best mates IRL as well)

Definitely give this one a watch!

Worth the watch for the thrill and fun.
5 January 2021
Do people seriously expect 'depth' from these kinds of movies? I'm sure some disaster movies do have the emotional depth and character development that these reviewers crave, but what happened to the age of movies that are just fun to watch.

Yes the characters are a bit 1 dimension, yes there are cheesy lines, yes they are saved by massive plot armour multiple times throughout the movie. Does it matter? Not at all. The movie is absolutely mortifying... I experienced severe dread multiple times throughout it. The graphics hold up in our modern age, and the disasters look just as horrific as you would expect them to in real life.

If you're looking for a thrill and some fun, this is a great movie to watch; grab some friends and some snacks and you'll have a great time. If you are seeker deeper meaning and character depth.. maybe try a different genre...?

Great film, also what's with the pig-headed men who are reviewing it?
4 January 2021
Movie is an excellent adventure, extremely unique and creative. Good characters, good momentum, good comedy, good romance. Worth the watch all around.

Something that I find bizarre and don't understand is not the movie itself, but many of the reviewers here. "nubile women" "hot girls who spread it", I'm having a hard time understanding if they're a bunch of dimwitted teenagers or sad old men with nothing better on their minds. Either way, ignore these absolute creepers-- yes the people in the movie are aesthetically pleasing to look at. The whole thing is aesthetically pleasing. Can we please keep it in our pants?

Some Youtubers remain decent people despite their fame. Lily isn't one of them.
2 March 2020
There was once a time where I really enjoyed Lily's content on Youtube. It was quirky, it had some wit, it was good clean fun. At the time she seemed to be quite a likable person.

Fast-forward 5 years, and Lily has become an egomaniac. Ignoring the "humour" of the show, which is too bland and dry to even be "So bad it's good"-- Lily is simply a bad human being. It shocks me that network television has allowed her content to continue after her openly sexist jokes towards white people, especially white men. Not only are these kind jokes repetitive and unoriginal, they're also shockingly generalised. Here's a fun game to play while waiting for her show to end: swap out every joke she makes toward white people with "Jewish people" or "Black people" and, imagine the havoc it would cause if broadcasted.

Unfunny stuff I can handle, but this is tasteless, offensive trash. Using the time slot to watch paint dry would be a better choice.

Love it to bits, I wanna kiss it on the lips
12 February 2020
This show gets so much undeserved criticism, mostly from your average viewer who is used to being spoon-fed the setup, the joke, and punchline all in one. These people will be left slack-jawed and drooling as they try to figure out what they just witnessed. It's funny to read these reviews that insult the intelligence of the writing or the maturity of the comedy, when half the people leaving these reviews simply did not (perhaps cannot?) attempt to fathom the nature of the comedic style beyond its surface level.

I'm not trying to say that only smart people can appreciate Tim & Eric-- it certainly isn't a show for everyone. A lot of Awesome Show is directly parodying crappy late-night 90s TV shows & infomercials. And while not everyone may understand that, there are so many 1 star reviews here whose writers clearly didn't have the basic intelligence to realise that there can be things that they don't "get"... and that doesn't make them bad.

If you recognise that nearly all of the show's content is heavily layered in irony and mockery, and that the main intention of Mr Heidecker and Mr Wareheim was just to have a lot of fun while making the show, you might find yourself enjoying it a lot more.

The actual quality of this show's humour is outrageously high. Every second of screentime is packed with jokes upon jokes. From the way the scene glitches into being shown, to the absurd or deadpan way the dialogue is communicated, the recurring themes like dads, eric's unchanging voice (even as a woman) and completely unnecessary and useless products.

There are actors who seem like they were brought off the street (and sometimes literally are), editing effects you'd expect from windows movie maker... The whole show is like one big late-night broadcasting acid trip. And I have never seen anything funnier, aside from maybe other T&E works.

The only issue I have with it is its duration. 10 minute episodes, 10 episodes per season, 5 seasons... the whole show clocks in at around 9 hours total, which is honestly pretty depressing. Thankfully Tim and Eric have worked on several other projects of a similar nature, some of which help fill the void.

Awesome Show remains my favourite show of all time, and my go-to show for a good laugh, for both sobriety and being stoned. Give it a go, keep an open mind. Have a few laughs and enjoy the ride.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011 Video Game)
1/10
*EDITED* The latest Creation Club patch has killed Skyrim for good (consoles)
19 December 2019
Vanilla Skyrim was decent. It was always a beautiful world, with fantastic music, and very interesting lore and story-- even if told through an immersion-breakingly small amount of voice actors.

But then there was bad level-up world scaling, where you level too quickly and attain gear upgrades before you even get a chance to enjoy the last bit of gear you earnt. EG, if you purchase/craft a full set of iron/hide and then go and do Bleak Falls Barrow, the first major quest, you will come back either wearing an entirely new set of gear, or it'll be available for purchase when you get back to town.

Clunky difficulty modes, where novice = Godmode, Legendary = Enemies will 1 shot you via execution cam, and you will take unrealistic/boring amounts of time to kill them.

Woefully balanced skill trees. Become a God with broken alchemy/enchanting, enjoy a reasonably balanced playstyle as a warrior, 1 shot everything as a stealth archer, or cast 30 fireballs at every opponent as a mage.

And most importantly, there were SO many glitches. Some just comical, some game-breaking, locking you out of entire quest chains and stories.

All of these factors made Skyrim an extremely enjoyable experience for a good chunk of time, but it becomes very obviously mediocre if you dedicated a lot of time to it.

But mods fixed these issues. The modding community turned a game that was a solid 7, patched all of its weak parts, and strengthed the parts that were already good. A well-modded Skyrim could very easily be called a 10/10 game.

The latest patch, by Bethesda, which has put a lot of mods behind a paywall on Console, has completely broken the game. A good 2/3rds of the mods I was using in my games no longer work, and nearly all of them won't be updated because they are several years old. I have saved files which have a few hundred hours of playtime, completely corrupted and unplayable. All because of Bethesda's greed.

PC gamers can at least avoid this issue by reverting to an older patch of the game, but console users are just screwed. What was once a beloved game is now unplayable.

Bethesda, you should be utterly ashamed of yourselves. I will never purchase another Bethesda game, even if they fix this mess.

The OA (2016–2019)
4/10
A lot of buildup, with no fulfillment.
15 March 2017
I really don't like shows like this. Forget about personal interest in genres & theme, I think we can all agree that we don't like it when a TV show lies to us. Specifically in this case, The OA teases the viewer with mystery, with wonder, with a hint of the supernatural, a glimpse into the human condition. It builds this interest up and up, tricking the viewer into following the tasty trail of breadcrumbs.

And then it shits all over you. None of the questions you have are answered, plot lines are built up and forgotten at the whim of the writer, and after the show ends, you are left with a confused, empty feeling. You can go back and watch again to see if you missed some crucial information, but no, the ending (without giving away any information, though I should say there PRACTICALLY IS NONE) essentially says "Tune in next season to find out what happens!"

It's cheap and dirty, and I don't know if the writers did it on purpose in order to keep the viewers watching, or whether they had no idea how to conclude the mess of forgotten plot lines & character development that they had built upon so much.

I would not recommend watching this show. The acting is great, the cinematography is great, some of the dialogue is great. But every episode goes on a tangent and digresses into a new plot line or character development, and you think it will be re-visited later, and fulfilled. But it never happens. If you want to watch this, go for it, but just be ready for complete disappointment as it comes to a close.

Hunter x Hunter (2011–2014)

This is the best anime I have ever seen.
13 September 2015
I do not think I will ever find an anime that is better than this one. EVERYTHING about it is perfect. The story, the fantasy, the themes, the feelings, the soundtrack, the characters... Oh, the characters. I swear- - The two main characters? I care about them more than half the people I know in real life.

I've watched quite a lot of anime, and a lot of them had a few qualities about them that were outstanding. One Piece has a great sense of adventure, Cowboy Bebop has an incredible moving story to tell, Death Note had a great perspective on morals... Hunter x Hunter HAS IT ALL!!

Do yourself a favor. Watch this anime. But don't go complaining to me once you finish it and realize that everything else pales in comparison.

Definitely worth watching, give it a shot
19 June 2015
I'm making this short review for one reason: Someone said in another review that "The plot doesn't go anywhere, 1/10". That person clearly doesn't understand that a thing called subplots exist, and the subplots of this show are fantastic and engaging. The main plot introduced hasn't moved particularly far forward this season, but that really isn't a problem. MANY shows don't advance the main plot until at least a few introductory seasons have passed.

Oh, and someone also said "this show is aimed at the LBGT community". No... no it isn't. Sense8 includes quite a few same-sex love scenes, but it also has many heterosexual love scenes. This show is progressive; it has adapted to our culture today, which is why it might come across as 'LGBT oriented' to a narrow-minded few.

But really, give it a shot. I'm sure you'll love it.
