1. The Piano Teacher (2001)

R | 131 min | Drama, Music

79 Metascore

A young man romantically pursues his masochistic piano teacher.

Director: Michael Haneke | Stars: Isabelle Huppert, Annie Girardot, Benoît Magimel, Susanne Lothar

Votes: 71,852 | Gross: $1.90M

Hanake is my favorite director and this is his best film. All of his films are disturbing, and beautiful. I love this movie because despite its dark nature, the main character is so strongly portrayed that I found myself rooting for her as she found her sexual match and was able to explore her repressed nature, as dark as it is. Highly recommend this to all cinema fans.

2. Thelma & Louise (1991)

R | 130 min | Adventure, Crime, Drama

89 Metascore

Two best friends set out on an adventure, but it soon turns around to a terrifying escape from being hunted by the police, as these two women escape for the crimes they committed.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis, Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen

Votes: 173,289 | Gross: $45.36M

I first saw this movie at the age of 9, in the theater I saw it five times. I can't quite say what about this movie connected with me so strongly, but I was obsessed for many years. Mainly I think I was drawn to a movie with such strong female characters and their strong friendship. I own the soundtrack, the VHS and DVD version, and will always have a crush on Brad Pitt in this movie. The opening credits still give me shivers of excitement, reminding me of being a child just beginning her relationship with movies.

3. The Shining (1980)

R | 146 min | Drama, Horror

68 Metascore

A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.

Director: Stanley Kubrick | Stars: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers

Votes: 1,107,280 | Gross: $44.02M

Horror is my favorite genre, and my favorites in this category are high on my list. The Shining is a perfect movie, that combines supernatural elements with the very real horror of male violence in the family. I have seen this movie countless times and find new moments I love every time.

4. Morvern Callar (2002)

R | 97 min | Drama

78 Metascore

After her beloved boyfriend's suicide, a mourning supermarket worker and her best friend hit the road in Scotland, but find that grief is something that you can't run away from forever.

Director: Lynne Ramsay | Stars: Samantha Morton, Kathleen McDermott, Linda McGuire, Paul Popplewell

Votes: 11,050 | Gross: $0.27M

Amazing. Wish this director made more films. Her use of music is wonderful, I love this soundtrack. I love the acting. This captures loss in ways I have never seen before. Samantha Morton is heart breaking as the women dealing with the lovers suicide. This film goes places I was not expecting and kept me at the edge of my seat, which is strange because it is very slow paced and subdued.

5. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

R | 83 min | Horror

90 Metascore

Five friends head out to rural Texas to visit the grave of a grandfather. On the way they stumble across what appears to be a deserted house, only to discover something sinister within. Something armed with a chainsaw.

Director: Tobe Hooper | Stars: Marilyn Burns, Edwin Neal, Allen Danziger, Paul A. Partain

Votes: 183,748 | Gross: $30.86M

Another great horror film. This one is a true classic. Best slasher film ever made, mainly because of its simplicity. Instead of giving each character a cheesy "character type" they hardly develop them at all, but simply show them talking, driving, laughing, like real young people. They do stand out as individuals but seem real, like you are watching home movies. Once the second half begins and our final girl is tied up and tortured by the crazy family, it feels like the most disturbing movie ever made, despite there being hardly any blood shown ever.

6. The Big Lebowski (1998)

R | 117 min | Comedy, Crime

71 Metascore

Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire of the same name, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it.

Directors: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen | Stars: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi

Votes: 860,690 | Gross: $17.50M

My favorite comedy. The dude is a role model in all the right ways (and wrong). I love the Coen brothers and most of their movies are great, but this one has such a special place in my heart, with is wacky characters and some of the funniest lines ever written.

7. Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972)

Not Rated | 95 min | Action, Adventure, Biography

In the 16th century, the ruthless and insane Don Lope de Aguirre leads a Spanish expedition in search of El Dorado.

Director: Werner Herzog | Stars: Klaus Kinski, Ruy Guerra, Helena Rojo, Del Negro

Votes: 62,318

Visually, this is the highest film on my list. A strange but breathtaking movie by the fantastic Werner Herzog and starring the insane Klaus Kinski. The opening shot is as epic as they come and the lead performance by Kinski is a new kind of mad. A great companion piece to this film is the documentary My Best Fiend: Klaus Kinski, which delves into their strange relationship.

8. Blue Velvet (1986)

R | 120 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

75 Metascore

The discovery of a severed human ear found in a field leads a young man on an investigation related to a beautiful, mysterious nightclub singer and a group of psychopathic criminals who have kidnapped her child.

Director: David Lynch | Stars: Isabella Rossellini, Kyle MacLachlan, Dennis Hopper, Laura Dern

Votes: 215,806 | Gross: $8.55M

I love David Lynch and all his weirdness. Like many people, I think this is his best work. A wonderful fairy tale of sexual perversion. It has great performances and my favorite musical number in almost any film, a weird lip synch to a Roy Orbison song. Also, my favorite quote "Baby wanna *beep*!"

9. Rosemary's Baby (1968)

Approved | 137 min | Drama, Horror

96 Metascore

A young couple trying for a baby moves into an aging, ornate apartment building on Central Park West, where they find themselves surrounded by peculiar neighbors.

Director: Roman Polanski | Stars: Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer

Votes: 235,306

A great feminist horror film. Mia Farrow is meek perfection in this movie, as the pregnant women stuck in an apartment of devil worshipers. Or is she just crazy? Or has the devil gotten her pregnant? A wonderful exploration of house wife claustrophobia and paranoia.

10. Cabaret (1972)

PG | 124 min | Drama, Music, Musical

80 Metascore

A female girlie club entertainer in Weimar Republic era Berlin romances two men while the Nazi Party rises to power around them.

Director: Bob Fosse | Stars: Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Helmut Griem, Joel Grey

Votes: 59,418 | Gross: $42.77M

I love a good musical, and this one is my favorite. Capturing the vivid underground cabaret scene in Germany right before World War 2, this movie shows how people can begin to take their freedom for granted, leading to its loss. The charming Liza Minnelli plays the adorable and heartbreaking Sally, whom falls for two men but struggles with her feelings of rejection when they fall for each other.

11. Requiem for a Dream (2000)

R | 102 min | Drama

71 Metascore

The drug-induced utopias of four Coney Island people are shattered when their addictions run deep..

Director: Darren Aronofsky | Stars: Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans

Votes: 899,122 | Gross: $3.64M

Many people find this hard to watch, or say they liked at but could never watch it again. I am a weirdo that could watch it over and over. Yes, the ending is beyond intense, but it also is a movie that gets in my soul and takes me away to another world, that I am glad only exists in the movie. Yet, it really captures addiction in a heart breaking way that few films are able to do. A piece of art from an extraordinarily talented director.

12. Waiting for Guffman (1996)

R | 84 min | Comedy

72 Metascore

An aspiring director and the marginally talented amateur cast of a hokey small-town Missouri musical production go overboard when they learn that someone from Broadway will be in attendance.

Director: Christopher Guest | Stars: Christopher Guest, Fred Willard, Catherine O'Hara, Parker Posey

Votes: 30,766 | Gross: $2.92M

My theater experience makes this my favorite Christopher Guest movie. It has so many funny scenes and the performance of their play at the end is priceless.
